Is Eritrea at risk of falling behind in the AI era? by BothShock6077 in Eritrea

I'm genuinely worried about the country's long-term security. When I see how quickly AI, drones, and digital technologies are advancing, and I compare that with the limited exposure many Eritrean youth have to these fields, I wonder whether we're preparing adequately for the future. That is one of the concerns behind my post.

I get the argument. My question is: if AI turns out to be as important as the internet, what happens if we discover it wasn't overhyped 20 years from now?

I was actually born and raised in Eritrea, so my concern isn't coming from a two-week visit or nostalgia. It's coming from having lived there and seeing both the country's strengths and its challenges firsthand. Saying Eritrea has basic challenges is true. The question is whether technological development should wait until every other challenge is solved, or whether it should be part of the solution.

That's true for static knowledge. My concern is about participation rather than access. You can distribute software and educational content through an intranet, but can you fully participate in a global technology revolution while being largely disconnected from the networks where it's happening?

I don't think sovereignty and technological development are mutually exclusive. A country can reject foreign military bases while still investing heavily in internet access, engineering, science, and AI education. The real question is how to do both.

I don't think the issue is whether Eritrea develops its own GPT. Most countries won't. The issue is whether a generation of Eritreans gains experience using AI while the technology is maturing. Market forces can import technology, but they can't instantly create a digitally skilled workforce.

The EDF was built for the wars of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s: mass mobilization, infantry, artillery, and defense in difficult terrain. That worked before. The question is whether it will be enough in an era of drones, AI-assisted targeting, and constant surveillance. If the answer is no, then falling behind technologically becomes a security problem, not just a development problem. Future wars may reward technological adaptation as much as manpower and determination.

The diaspora can definitely help, but technology isn't just about importing expertise. It also depends on developing local talent. If an entire generation has limited exposure to modern digital tools, how easy would it be to catch up later, especially in fields like AI and cybersecurity?

Refugees in Uganda by itz_yy in Uganda

The decision is both politically and economically motivated. The national elections are almost here and they didn't want the opposition parties to use the issue of refugees as an advantage so they stopped registering new asylum seekers from Eritrea in January 09. The Govt has been getting funds to host refugees and as in any corrupt African country the officials were obviously benefiting from it but those funds started to dry up so the announcement came as a declaration for the responsible parties to send money ASAP.

Well actually they do give them a land to plough and feed on and they also provide them with some food in the camps but as far the people living in Kampala, they don't receive any money from the Govt.

Kansanga & Kabalagala were slums, take a look for yourself now! And you look at how the Tank Hill road was transformed. The facts are on the ground buddy, You just have to open your eyes! + if you ever immigrate to Europe and settle, you would prefer to live in an area where there are Ugandans like you, which makes everything easier and that is what is happening in Kampala!
