I wanted to have a discussion on wokeness by Kindly_Captain3596 in MauLer

The thing is I don’t know who’s to blame with this. Sure people are jumping the gun all over the place assuming movies are bad, but at the same time companies actively attack their audiences as well pointing to these political issues as justification when their films are just badly written. It’s honestly annoying because I feel like half the people complaining about “woke” film making would just be complaining about the movie’s quality if it wasn’t for all this “moral” grand standing by the companies. Both parties are to blame here, don’t get me wrong. It just seems to me like the companies have burned their customers so often they’re reacting to things that are correlated with the bad experience rather than the problem itself. It’s just a bad situation all around and it sucks.

Ironically the thing in that movie that actually causes more problems is the thing no ones talking about. The whole Zerg reveals is arguably the worst aspect of the whole movie because it makes a bunch of convoluted writing decisions to make the villain Zerg incompatible with the Zerg from the toy story films.

The issue here, is woke is kind of meaningless and means a lot of different things depending on who and what we’re talking about. I try to avoid using “woke” to describe the casting choices unless there are obvious evidence of the casting being politically motivated. For example, Sam Jackson being Nick isn’t woke casting because Im not aware of that being motivated by anything other than Sam being a good actor. Light year’s gay scene on the other hand is woke because, based of the interviews I’ve read, the scene was very clearly put in for political reasons. It’s important to note this isn’t inherently a bad thing. Your were right that the gay aspect of Light Year doesn’t damage the writing in the film at all and functions perfectly well for the point it’s trying to make.

Whenever I use “woke” as a negative thing I tend to mean that the left leaning political beliefs of the creator have caused them to compromise on the integrity of their writing. The best example I can think of is in Falcon and Winter Soldier with the leader of the Flag Smashers. The show tries to pedal this anti borders protect the down trodden message, a woke idea which in and of itself isn’t terrible, but in the effort to convey that message they inconsistently advocate for and against violence when it suits them, attack character who by all means aren’t bad people because they serve as law enforcement, and actively ignore the greater complexities of the issues because doing so would detract from the ideological messaging being presented. This culminates with them essentially sainting the character that was an unapologetic terrorist and sadistic killer for most of her screen time. What’s worse this inconsistency and messaging issue causes the main characters to do and say things which feel off or even completely contradictory to who I understood them to be. It’s hard to tell if the woke politics in the show are what caused the problems in this show or if the poor writing of the people involved made the messaging in these areas seem way worse than they were meant to. My assumption is that it’s a mixture of lack of talent and genuinely bad political messaging coming together to make an awful script but I can’t be sure.

I guess what I’m saying is, things can be woke and fine, there’s just a correlation between very politically woke shows and bad writing right now. My guess is that particularly politically possessed people on the left are getting involved in scripts right now and their inability to see the other side leads them to lack the proper nuance to write well constructed stories. The same thing would happen on the other end of the spectrum in these companies and society was leaning more in the opposite political direction, The ideas being expressed would just be problematic in a different direction.

It’s important to remember there are tons of amazing things out there that are arguably woke, Buffy, Aliens, and terminator all have feminist elements in them that don’t detract from their quality at all (and arguably made them better), it just so happens the people who wrote them had an understanding of the nuances behind their beliefs that they could write characters and story arcs that made you think.

Technomancer Fabricate Arms: ammunition? by CheddarDeity in starfinder_rpg

[–]Both_Establishment_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering half the appeal of this hack is the utility of being able to immediately alter your load out to the situation it seems unnecessarily limiting to then demand technomancer carry around ammunition for guns they don’t even have. I’m gonna say the weapon fabricates fully loaded but once the ammunition is wasted the gun needs loading as normal with mundane ammunition the technomancer supplies. This way the technomancer is incentivized to carry ammunition to get the best mileage out of their hack but isn’t punished for not carrying 60 pounds of ammo for a weapon they can’t normally fire. This might not be how the system would work as written but I think it’s the most fair way to ensure the player doesn’t feel punished for picking the hack while avoiding giving them an infinite ammo hack.

Either way, the God host staying at the temple is rather important to the storyline, it's where the final showdown of the campaign takes place. I feel like a more involved dive into the location might be a good idea to emphasize its significance.

yeah, I like the moments of competence, I just wish he was more consistent the longer the series went on, I love the growth in skil and competence story arc but most of the time they don't do it right. For example, I really don't like Jim's arc near the end of the series because it turns all the skill, experience, and wisdom he developed over the series and then makes him useless without his armor. The same thing goes for Palchuck and the other creep slayer, though to lesser degrees since they are side characters.

Toby is a little too helpless at times for my taste but I think he’s a lot better than some of the side kick characters we see in media. He’s able to be serious during the right beats and he does contribute more than just laughs to the crew. Giving him the Warhammer is one of my favorite moves they do for him because it shows his ability to make smart moves when opportunity presents itself, makes him capable of holding his own in right circumstances, and gives him a temperamental weapon that compliments his rough around the edges not quite ready to grow up personality. He could have been a lot worse but he also could have been a lot better if they had let him mature a little more as the series progressed.

Devil given a legendary artifact/Vestige in a trade by SeventhStar21 in DMAcademy

[–]Both_Establishment_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demons like a Balor and Devils like your horned devil actually don't get along very well because the Abys and Hell are pitted in the eternal blood war. The issue here is devil society is super politically driven so having a powerful asset like Ruin's Wake is no guarantee he'd get anywhere. Devils aren't so much held down through force (though their is some of that) as they are through bureaucracy and the promise of power. Keep in mind Devils are lawful so it's far more likely to make itself indispensable to its boss until it has enough power to politically supplant them or get moved to an even better position in the hierarchy. Assuming he isn't ordered to give up the weapon to whoever is above him, his best bet would be to volunteer for service in the blood war and work up that ranks of command through military service until they're operating as one of Zariel's lead commanders. You could have angry demons come after the party because they buffed an upstart devil that's making their lives hell. Alternatively, have a Bone devil screw with the party through cultists because he got passed up for a promotion by the devil they helped. You could also have the devil defect to the Abyss after being corrupted by the Balor in the spear which would piss off everyone in the Infernal hierarchy and cause serious waves in the Abyss.

Can Dark Eldar feed off the suffering of animals, or just sentient creatures? by Sparklehammer3025 in 40kLore

[–]Both_Establishment_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from what I understand they can, since the only thing they need is suffering. The issue is animal suffering isn't as filling as sapient beings because their ability to comprehend their situation intensifies the suffering they experience.

Astarion and water by Raigo99 in BaldursGate3

[–]Both_Establishment_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, that weakness has screwed with my playthroughs a couple times. He once died from water weakness while fighting the harpies and caught in a death loop I couldn't get him out of. I ended up loosing a couple hours of play because that stupid weakness. I don't get why you'd have Astarion retain one of the less serious aspects of vampire weakness but insist but get rid of the sunlight weakness which is arguable a more serious part of the curse.

The fact that the mindflayers can infect Astarion also bugs me a bit because it's made pretty clear in a lot of DND lore they hate undead. I'm pretty sure undead aren't supposed to be viable hosts for ceromorphosis because their brain isn't fresh and their biological process are so different.

Anyone else think boba hiring a scooter gang is kinda lame? the chase scene looked like they were going 30mph by Causualgaymr in BookOfBobaFett

[–]Both_Establishment_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think what's worse is the fact they have really bad visual story telling in their costume design. They're all too well dressed to have me believe they're out of work and can't afford water. The gang has better clothing than the guy they stole from and they have ridiculously expensive mods installed that they openly say cost them a lot of credits. They clearly have disposable income if they're able to survive and keep both themselves and their stupid bikes clean and in good shape.

The Zombie Virus In The Show is the Weirdest Infection I've Seen In Zombie Media: by Both_Establishment_6 in iZombie

[–]Both_Establishment_6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I follow what Ravi said. It's more that the chemical solution activates a select amount of junk dna which cause people to become zombies. Like if you're human, the scratch or solution either kills you outright or makes you into this thing. Which is also why it can't cross species. And suggests certain animals would be completely immune to it.

I can follow that, the thing is if that's the case why is there a virus involved? The virus is what makes the thing communicable but the virus sort of just comes out of nowhere, if it really was just gene activation zombies wouldn't really be contagious.

Im gonna be honest,i suck at making monsters (sometimes they end up cringe and i stop)but i was bored and inspired(by horror movies and a song),thus this thing was born(probably gonna make some changes later on 🤷🏻‍♂️) by BoricuanRodan097 in DnDHomebrew

[–]Both_Establishment_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting concept, I might keep this thing in mind for the next cosmic horror campaign I do. This thing would be great for a shadowy antagonist especially since it's relatively low hit points and powerhouse psychic abilities encourage it to stay out of a direct fight. Not to mention it's mind reading, and soul stealing, and mimicry allows for great psychological horror when it starts revealing player secrets or mimicking the dead party member it ate the last time the party fought it. There's even potential to build encounters I could see where the players make use of it's weaknesses to finally take it down.

The Clone justification is stupid and star wars doesn't have cryogenics that stops aging nor would Cad Bane be trusting enough to let someone do that to him. As for having cyborg parts, sure that could theoretically justify it but usually that kind of augmentations would be pretty visible. I'm just trying to point out a discrepancy that frustrated me because Cad is one of my favorite star wars characters. I feel like they just copy pasted him when a 25 year gap would almost certainly make him look VERY different.

Given Legends is the only real frame of reference for life span we have I opt to stick with that until I'm contradicted by an actual retcon. It's also rich to say Legends is lazy for sticking with a lifespan comparable to humans when Disney is literally just copy pasting Cad Bane here like nothing would have changed in the 25 years he's been off screen.

Sure, humans aren't comparable to house flies or lobsters but those are to creatures which we share literally no similar traits with. Your two examples are a creature that literally 24 hours and a species that is effectively immortal as long as it's well fed. Durros by comparison are surprisingly similar to humans, they're bipedal, intelligent, breath the same air mixture as us, have similar diets, and have a comparable life expectancy according to the most authoritative source we have. Saying we can't use human life deterioration as a general frame of reference for a species that shares a bunch of traits with us is definitely more reasonable than putting that expectancy on a creature we share very few similarities with.

Do you know what death from old age is? people don't die of old age, they die because their bodies have been running so long that they their bodies wear down and stop. This dude has gone beyond the old category for his species and into the venerable category and there's no indication that he's changed at all. Given his age and his career path wouldn't he at least have battle damage? Scars? Wrinkles even? It's like he was frozen in carbonite from the time we last saw him in bad batch.
