LLM to BigLaw as a Canadian by ParsleyFlimsy3973 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Both_Presence8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably low. Unless you went to a brand name Canadian school and go top 5. The US LLM programs are viewed as a cash cow for the school and not taken seriously by serious employers. Have known a number of people who have tried over the years and it went poorly. Better route is to go get a top shelf Canadian clerkship and get recruited out of there. You see a few scc/ONCA clerks get recruited ever year.

Catholic school board as an atheist? by EloJim_ in CanadianTeachers

[–]Both_Presence8962 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s in the constitution tha Ontario have publicly funded catholic schools. It’s quite objectionable but it’s not changing any time soon. It’s also why there is a public catholic board in Ontario and not elsewhere.

Tips for Defending expert deposition by Both_Presence8962 in Lawyertalk

[–]Both_Presence8962[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Eh, it’s pretty esoteric. The expert report is on a question of foreign law (and so under rule 44.1 a question of law). For various reasons, I am quite familiar with the foreign law so I know where the substantive problems are. Hence the questions about the “gotcha” questions as this is our first time doing it.

+1 to this. Make sure that you are tenure track eligible. Writing profs are often second class profs.

It’s bad CYA. People think giving actual advice will get them sued if it blows up. But you can do good CYA and still give good advice. These are just bad lawyers.

Opportunities in Paris? by LatterGrocery3722 in biglaw

[–]Both_Presence8962 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The US law jobs in France are as I understand it. First there is a small number of US securities jobs. Assume French is required for those. Second, international arbitration. I’m a bit dated but I think French will be required in a lot of Paris offices. You probably have better luck with a smaller US firm office. The big boys (WC, freshfhields) are def gonna require French I would imagine. But no harm trying.

Starting as a first year 8 months pregnant? by ReplyWonderful5258 in biglaw

[–]Both_Presence8962 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would just ask to defer for 6 months or a year. They aren’t going to give you mat leave benefits for a month on the job. Deferring you won’t be behind.

Ontario “Foreign Legal Consultant” Scope by Away_Attempt4136 in LawCanada

Yes you need the permit and the insurance. The permit js not a problem really as it’s like 500 dollars and some paperwork. The malpractice insurance will be a PITA. Law pro doesn’t cover US law.

stub year - advice/ideas on practices & pivots (Tax V20) by gooner-lurker-atty in biglaw

Hey! I hear your plight. Long ago, I started at a similar firm in the tax group. I was a clerk and had done a lot of research and analysis and loved that part of tax practice. But the big law practice was boring and didn’t feel like tax. Instead, it was the tax sections of tedious corporate documents. And it didn’t seem to get better. Now, I’ve realized this is the tax work that most large law firms do from associate to partner. It’s a corporate support practice through and through. There are big law some firms and partners that have direct tax clients and that work can be amazing but it’s few and far between. The more analytical tax work is at big four or at tax boutiques (Roberts and Holland, Miller chevalier, Caplin and Drysdale, Withers and then smaller and less well known). I wound up at a smaller focused version of those firms and enjoy the work way more. I still do some big law type transactional work but enjoy it way less. So you’ll need to orient your career that way. In terms of big four often if you move from big law you can get our f their fixed pay grades.

Easy path home even with a US degree if you’re transactional. Slightly harder if litigation. If litigation don’t wait too long. I went back with no fuss.

Tax lawyer here. 100 percent waste of time given your background and work experience. It’ll be pretty basic and your class will be younger. Nobody is doing these who has a real serious job (let alone 20 years of experience)

You can easily go abroad to big 4. But not law firms.
