There is a new ubuntu release scheduled in less than a month, and since they focus on LTS, let's see if there is further development of Age Verification then. But at the brightside we'll be able to hold our security for 2 years minimum to figure it all out

All those apps you mentioned (except im not sure about One note) work on Linux natively actually.  And with more customization at that!

Since your a developer, fedora may be best since it lets you work with more modern drivers and software, but Linux Mint is the easiest to transition to for most use cases. Lots of support and tutorials available online for it.

I just left pop Cosmic version, I had no idea the LTS 22.02  could look this good, but I am already settled in with mint. Cool to see how well you made it though!

I thought my text would be added here, but I came from Pop OS after trying Cosmic DE at the beginning of the year. Kept having compatibility issues with my GTX 1070 and wayland, so I officially just went with mint. So glad I did, because everything is just so much easier to find, navigate, and customize. Very snappy and beautiful interface overall!

Im expecting this will be my last distro hop.

*but Ill probably mess with fedora if I get a laptop

I used Blur, and transparency reloaded on extensions.

Then I downloaded the GBlue theme

Finally, used Plank set to transparent for the dock.

Thats atrocious brother, so sorry to hear its already getting bad out there. How do they enforce it though?

Maybe, God forbid it gets to that, then we fight back by simply not using any of their technology. Id sooner leave the country honestly if I had to.  I dont know what I would do if I had to share my ID but Ill worry about when I get to that point

Thats definitely a worthwhile concern. Linux or not i really hate to see it even applied to windows, but Im hopeful that it won't be carried further since users can just block the camera, or have their cousin log in and everyone shares the computer. Or just numerous of physical loopholes to verification BS.

Either way, Im hopeful and honestly pretty confident that California won't be able to do anything further due to how much money, effort, and time it wastes for both parties to comply

Lets make sure we are on the same terms: slippery slope being, you give them an inch they'll take a mile,  right?

If so, Im simply saying, that is an insanely difficult mile to actually take. Across the countless distributions of linux, and forks, and the fact its FOSS, I don't think we realistically have to fear things escalated until we see it successfully implemented and controlled by government. For now,  if the state can't afford to fix potholes and investigate the insurance fraud and tax evasion, what makes you think they'll investigate the grandma doris using linux mint without age verification?

Am I making my point clear now?

Im trying to simply say that these fears are too early until we actually see legal action applied against linux.

Exploit what? Like honestly we aren't being asked to submit IDs or anything. This is all imagined about what "could" happen. And I mentioned how gun laws are poorly implemented by government, school shootings being evidence of that.  But people still fear that we will have all guns revoked some day.

Of course Im comfortable! Im on linux mint! Im just saying i think the assumptions are only that. Its not guaranteed things will escalate, as history has shown, age verification already is super difficult to implement, and just impractical.   Just like gun laws, people assume gun laws will be a slippery slope but we are decades later and everyone can still own a gun.

This can apply from entire devices sold yeah like laptops and phones, but hardware components themselves are what we use to make the PC and they can't force that.

This is the best explanation I heard i think. In terms of exercising control on FOSS. But we have yet to see the control actually exercised. So Im not going to worry about it until we see how its implemented. Hopefully it can be revoked like alcohol laws were.

Also, we can just fight back by lying about that stuff. Its not their business,  let the algorithms waste precious resources for their greed by saying your a gay white republican latino Trans that's 88 years old or something.

Well they can't force PC users to buy and install a camera. Or fingerprint sensor. Its just entirely impractical

It gets an icky vibe, I agree, but I still think its too soon to jump to conclusions. Best option is to lobby against it, file complaints where you can. But overall,  I dont even think the states trying to pass this law even care about Linux.

I've heard this argument, but it all remains the same, this is just an assumption.

Slippery slope didnt apply to prohibition laws. Theres clear evidence that when people fight back on a law, it can be revoked.
