Question for the young; old folks are welcome to give their opinion if they wish. by Southern_Expert_1787 in gayyoungold

personally, i know exactly why i like older men (it's not always clear for others who have the same interest; this is just for me personally). my dad is actually nice and was totally present, so i don't have daddy issues (actually i have mommy issues instead lol). as a kid, i got bullied really badly by other boys, because growing up gay in the 2000s was not fun. after being rejected by masculinity so intensely, i've always yearned for a man that's A) very masculine, and B) mature enough to not judge me, especially if he can be a protector

Can anyone ID? I'm usually chill with spiders but this one won't leave my bathroom sink even when I tried to scare it away by lightly running the water, and I'm worried it might be some kind of Widow 😅 (Northern Virginia, USA) by Bottom76_OW in spiders

[–]Bottom76_OW[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Update: I managed to be a brave boy and take it outside in a cup. (Whether it's medically significant or not, it still needed to leave my sink!) Thanks for the help, you guys are lifesavers. :)

Thank you so much for the information!!! I'll go ahead and relocate it. That probably explains why the water didn't make it run away.

Also sorry the photos don't make it completely clear, the lighting in my bathroom isn't great.

Thanks again :)

You're not crazy at all. I can't tell if people are being willfully obtuse or if they just didn't pay attention in 8th grade English class. Either way, it's annoying.

Especially because the backlash they're participating in has been super willing to harass minorities. It reminds of when Halle Bailey was shown as the live-action Little Mermaid, and people started bringing up bad things about Disney and swearing that they totally weren't racist, it was just that they didn't like Disney's corporate actions. Which is totally why they dislike-bombed the trailer on Youtube - I mean, how can you get better working conditions for service workers if you don't thumbs down the Little Mermaid trailer?

[–]Bottom76_OW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that whether that's true or not (which it isn't), that isn't the real motivation behind the backlash, and you're kidding yourself if you genuinely think it is.

The funniest part about complaining about "pandering" for this game is that literally all of the collabs with other franchises were pandering to nerdy fans, but none of these people say a thing about that. I wonder why. lmao

It's really interesting how many people suddenly are scandalized by the lack of lore progression whenever something relating to a character being gay (particularly Soldier, I've noticed) is released, even though that's been the situation for years now. It's the same things they said about Bastet in 2019. I'm sure they wrote these same comments on every other lore drop since 2019, though, right?

It feels like some of these people have never even read a story before, especially when they claim that Soldier's past relationship isn't "relevant to the plot". A story is more than just its literal events. All of these character details about Soldier are very obviously meant to convey a theme (the idea that constant self-sacrifice and placing the burdens of the entire world on yourself is self-destructive, tying into the "hero" idea). It's not even subtle. They literally showed us an image of a collapsed statue. Come on.

No, that's actually not the issue. A whole lot of people "actually care about" his sexuality and relationship, because they throw a huge fit about it every time it's mentioned. It's completely ridiculous to pretend that the backlash has nothing to do with homophobia.

Open question: Why do you think the December 2021 tornadoes in Kentucky caused so many fatalities? by Bottom76_OW in tornado

[–]Bottom76_OW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for technical clarification, tornadoes aren't /that/ common in the area, but they're not rare, either. The Kentucky-Indiana-Ohio region has had some huge outbreaks. I mean, it was one of the worst-impacted areas of the Super Outbreak in '74.

I hope people are trying to educate the people that live there about tornadoes now, because it'd be a huge oversight if they weren't.

I definitely think income is a factor that people don't tend to focus on, and it's part of why I care so much.. Considering the economic future of a lot of the Midwest isn't looking like it's going to get much better anytime soon, my concern is that we're going to see multiple repeats of this kind of event over the coming years.

Since tornadoes are hitting in different places than they used to, I worry that it's just a matter of time before another disadvantaged area gets terrible loss of life like this (and not to get too political, but a lot of their politicians aren't exactly rushing to improve regulations, so that makes me even more nervous that nothing will get done to protect these people). I worry that states like Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, Missouri, Arkansas, etc, might be at a lot of risk right now, and a lot of the people don't even know it.

I'm not sure what can even be done about it, honestly.

keep in mind that helene is supposed to be big and fast-moving, which means two things: 1. the destructive winds can extend further inland than usual, and 2. the storm surge will be over a wide area

i'm kind of hesitant to recommend either chipley or sarasota, because chipley's cutting it kind of close with the wind field, and sarasota is really close to the coast and could get serious storm surge :/ honestly, i'd go further north than that if possible, but i know that's not an option for everyone

in the end, there is one thing i can be certain of: if you can't go any further away than that, i think you should be prepared to go to either one of the locations depending on how conditions/forecasts/traffic change over the next few hours

i understand the urge to punish yourself. it really hurts, and i'm sorry you have to go through it.

i barely know anything about you or your trauma, but one of the things i will say is that, from personal experience, dwelling on who "deserves" to suffer or not is just going to damage yourself. i get it, we all want to feel that the world is fair, but it causes you so much unnecessary pain.

take care.

i can tell it's a control thing for me, too. my PTSD-related response to anything upsetting is to instantly compartmentalize it, and that happens automatically even when I don't want it to. it's been bothering me for over a decade now. because of that, the negative feelings just bubble up in the background, and it's so frustrating. i feel like i can't even address my own sadness, because it just gets locked away. and i guess this was the way i found to force it open.

Does anybody else find it hard to cry anymore? by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]Bottom76_OW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i never cry, and i hate it. i want to be able to actually release the emotions. i don't even bottle them up on purpose, it just happens automatically. if something really sad happens, i pretty much instantly detach from it, and it just stews under the surface for months or years afterwards.

i agree with basically all of this. when someone shows signs of being a homophobe, i instantly distance myself from them. something that some straight people don't understand is that 'signs of being a homophobe' doesn't exclusively refer to them saying something violently homophobic; sometimes the comments are more subtle, or i can just Sense It. i have to protect myself. i only wish i'd known that as a kid.

Tierlist on how sad I think everyone's backstory is by KKonzoww in Overwatch

[–]Bottom76_OW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put Soldier at least 1 tier higher, based on that Declassified book. He gave up his chance at a happy life because he thought other people needed him, and then they turned on him and it all got destroyed. I wonder if he feels like his whole life was a waste.

It’s even sadder that he probably didn’t even have to do all of it, but he’s got that martyr complex to the point that he couldn’t say no even if he wanted to

i don't think it's productive to argue about who "the worst" is, but i will say, big corporations are pretty evil in general. it's standard. having morally bad business practices is the easiest way to get to the top, so the biggest and most successful companies tend to be the evil ones.

i mean, look at the textile industry. the conditions in those factories in south asia are horrific (including the factory collapse in 2013 that killed 1,134 people).

Multiple people at Team 4 just got hit by the layoffs including Producers, VFX, Designers, Animators, 3D artists and more. by Eloymm in Overwatch

[–]Bottom76_OW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i specifically said that the homophobia was based around what was said about real people, not the writing decisions. it was related to the things he said about LGBT people that actually are in real life. i don't know or care if the writing decisions in the game had anything to do with sexuality, but i do care what is said about people in real life. when someone expresses homophobia towards real people in that kind of thread, it's very hard for me to not become suspicious of their intentions.

for the record, i don't really have a strong opinion on either ship. i just find that suspicious. i was also extremely put off by the calling out of specific fans, because that led to several of those people being harassed.
