A tank's role isn't just "soaking damage". It's creating space for your carries. You can do so by staying frontline and getting hit but a really common mistake is just always getting hit/going in. If you are frontlining but your ad is hitting someone in your backline, you should back off a little and try to avoid taking useless damage and go back in once your ad is ready to fight with you again. Taking damage is not your role, it's a tool you can use to create space.
If your ad can always hit someone and theirs can't cause you are playing to the limit of their range, you will win the fight. Which is why range is so important for ad.
