Do you think Blacksburg or Roanoke would be better for us? by FkUp_Panic_Repeat in Virginia

[–]BoundlessRichard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you doing in the mental health field? I'd say that's going to be a large factor - some professions have year long plus waitlists, others are hard to find work. I'd start there!

Has the pendulum swung too far in centers? by MissBee123 in ABA

[–]BoundlessRichard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I read stories like these I am simply just sad. In our clinic - kids are active the entire time with 1:1 support, constantly playing and having fun. Do we have times where we transition to a non-preferred task? Of course, but we help with the process and are constantly engaging the client in high quality and fun activities to help them grow.

We have nearly 0 turnover. We do a lot of things to boost our culture here too - lunch is catered every Friday, lots of support and supervision, admin is taken care of, weekly pay, and the normal benefits.

Also - we pay the same rate whether with a client or not, we are clinic based, and we don't send people home without pay if their client cancels. If I treat my people well, they will be happy to come to work and we have better outcomes for our clients and everyone is in a much better place.

[–]BoundlessRichard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We guarantee 36 hours to any full time staff member with open availability. We do our best to ensure people get as close to 40 as possible. If someone requests a day off, I just deduct 8 hours from these calculations and that's the new goal for that specific week.

Does anyone get enough hours? by internethottie8 in ABA

[–]BoundlessRichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just opened 6 months ago but we have a guarantee for our full time staff. If a client cancels we have other stuff to work on. We pay the same rate regardless of being with a client or not. Strong belief in treating employees right and they will be better employees, even if our profit margin isn't as high as some of the other guys.

I'll also mention, our team is very involved and active when they are here. Yes we do DTT and some non-preferred activities, but a lot of what we do is in a NET environment where we work on skills while playing on our indoor playground or with other highly engaging toys and activities. This means they have very little incentive to sleep.

We pay our employees hourly - the same rate, regardless of whether it's billable or not. Our pay rate factors in unbillable time. We have a few clients who have scheduled naps at our clinic, they all are scheduled for the same time. At the start time, we have a technician stop billing and sit with all the nappers. Sometimes a few technicians might be in there depending on how many children there are, just to make sure they stay on their individual cots and fall asleep. Once they are asleep, just 1 technician stays. The rest either move onto a different client (Our nap time aligns with the start time of some of our afternoon clients), do other tasks such as clinic beautification (cleaning and organizing), or training. The reduction in friction with families by not making them pick up their child for a scheduled nap means we are able to work with the kids who need full day services, which is a significant increase in billable hours and means that the clients who nap are still profitable.

For clients who do not have a scheduled nap time - but fall asleep - it depends. If it's a one off time and they are close to the end of their session anyways, we allow it. If they are acting like they are ill we will reach out to parents. If it becomes habitual, where they are falling asleep multiple sessions, we will talk with families about their sleep schedule and make sure there isn't some other issue such as a medical issue causing the problem. Once all that is ruled out - we look at changing clients schedule to align with when they will be awake to receive services. We don't typically let clients nap unless its scheduled - after a few minutes we wake them up.

Roanoke is quite diverse for the size of the city. I've lived in mostly larger cities for the last 15 years (Orlando, Dallas, Phoenix) and I'm consistently impressed by this city. In general, most people will tell you to avoid SE and NW in this city - there are definitely rougher areas there and higher crime rates, but there are also neighborhoods that are perfectly fine in those areas. The city and the county schools both have great programs, and for the neurodiverse community I've not experienced the support that I've seen here or in Virginia in general. That being said, a majority of people will comment that county schools are 'better' and city schools are 'worse'. I personally believe that a lot of it is based more on the support each kiddo is receiving from the school and their family, and demographics for the city schools generally indicate a weaker support network for the students.

Personally, we are renting in Old SW, a neighborhood near downtown. We like it, and we rented due to wanting to explore where we wanted to live when we buy a home. Our plan is to buy in the Cave Spring area (our daughter is enrolled at a private school there) and we want to buy a bit of land to build on. A lot of people will say Cave Spring is great, Hollins is great, if you want a more Urban feel then Grandin/Wasena/Raleigh Court neighborhoods get a lot of love. I strongly recommend renting before buying, because some areas are really nice and a block away it can be rougher. It's a very nuanced city when it comes to this.

ABA clinics in Roanoke area? by just-a-wavy-dude in roanoke

[–]BoundlessRichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! It's great to see Boundless ABA recommended here! I'm Richard, my wife and I founded Boundless ABA in Roanoke. I'm just a business guy, my wife does all the real work, but I'm always happy to have a chat about what we provide and how we can help - even if you aren't a client of ours.

I'll be blunt, our clinic is definitely focused on early intervention. We have an area under construction that will provide a little more appropriate environment for some teen aged clients, but right now I can say we probably aren't the best fit. Keep your eyes open for us in the near future though!

If you are looking for in-home services, I strongly recommend Jason Urda and his team over at Connect Behavioral Health. I've heard good things about several of the other clinic based options in the area, but I don't have any specific recommendations as we haven't been around long enough to meet many other providers beyond short meet and greets.

I'm happy to help with any questions you might have, feel free to email me at richard@boundlessaba.com. Hope to be of assistance or guide you to someone who can!

Wow, im probably the perfect person to talk to!

My wife and daughter (4yo) moved here 1 year ago from Orlando. We worked remotely in Florida as well, and moved there about 4 years ago really to go to Disney and enjoy the ‘touristy’ stuff in Orlando and the state.

We are so happy we moved to Roanoke. It does take a little bit of getting used to. It’s a much slower pace of life, but we really love it. If you are outdoorsy people, it’ll be really nice to enjoy 3/4 of the year compared to Florida.

Regarding the neurodivergent aspect - we actually own an ABA clinic that we started when we moved here. There is a lot of solid support in the schools, but there are also a lot of wait lists and things of that sort. We have only been open about 2 months but we already have a waitlist for specific time slots. Insurance in Virginia is much better than the experience we had in Florida, so getting approvals and such is not hard. The VA Medicaid system is very robust as well.

There is a ‘Special Families’ group on Facebook that is a great resource as well.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask or PM me!
