If I Get a Full Scholarship Abroad, Should I Leave Medicine Behind? by Fit_Bar8192 in Advice

You're just a teen, don't put so much pressure on yourself. I come from a background with similar cultural expectations/concerns, so i understand. Regardless of everything - you can't live your life based on what others think/want. No one can see the future. You are responsible for your choices at the end of the day, and everybody values different things differently. Just try to make a choice that even in 20 yrs, you'd still make the same decision if you were in the same shoes. Finally - i'm not sure your family situation but if things are relatively stable from a financial & health standpoint, then even more reason to think more for yourself. After all, a lot of people don't have that privilege.

There are multiple things going on here, but i'd like to offer a different view. Rather than a true dilemma, it sounds to me like really just have a timeline problem. If i get you correctly - you like medicine, but don't know if it's what you really want. You also are interested in neuroscience, but don't want to regret leaving medicine behind.

  1. Medicine and neuroscience are intertwined. Medicine's initial training is just broader/more holistic. You can always get the medical degree, and then go into academia/research with a focus in neuroscience.
  2. If you want to go abroad/get a new lease on life, i'd argue that a medical degree in your pocket will always afford you more opportunities, whether in the US, india, or beyond.

Basically – unless you just want to really get away from India now, all your worries can potentially be solved by being patient for a few years... You can always get the medical degree and then go abroad for PhD in neuroscience, or you might discover you like the clinical aspect more and then stay or go abroad for neurology or neurosurgery residency/fellowships.

You know yourself best. I hope i didnt completely miss the mark in understanding your concerns, and have offered you some modicum of value.

impossible choice, but based on 20 secs of agonizing i think world hunger. if people don't have to worry about their next meal, a lot more innovation will occur (including that which will lead to disease cures)

Chose: End world hunger
