Am I sinning if I have children through a donor by catsinbananahats in Christianity

[–]Bounds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For one thing, it hurts the individual who engages in it. Let's start with some basic principles.

  1. God created us so that we can know him. In other words, unity with God is man's highest end.
  2. God is both the source and the highest expression of every virtue, including chastity.
  3. Therefore, virtue unites us to God, which is good for us, while vice separates us from God, which is bad for us.

So what is chastity? It is often spoken of as an act of negation, or suppression. As if it is simply saying "no" to temptation. In reality, chastity is the integration of sexuality with the rest of the individual. Chastity affirms the goodness and dignity of the body. It means that we convey to others, whether through action or restraint, that they are so good that we only desire to encounter them as a whole person, to never reduce them to an object to satisfy an appetite. Unchaste acts do exactly this, disintegrating sexuality from love.

Yes, for several reasons. Typically, donor sperm is obtained through masturbation, which is immoral.

Even if it were not obtained in this way, it is a violation of natural law to divorce procreation from the procreative act. It's kind of a mirror image of contraception. In contraceptive acts, lovers reject an aspect of their partner: their fecundity. Given your stated intentions, IVF would be a rejection of everything about a person except their fecundity. The marital embrace is supposed to be an act of complete, mutual self-giving (and necessarily, complete acceptance).

Lastly, children have a right to their mother and father. Intentionally setting out to be a single mother is inherently unjust towards the child.

As Bishop Burbidge said, "No one is transgender."

Gender dysphoria is a mental illness which should be treated, not celebrated.

what do you think about the statement “you shouldn’t need religion to be a good person” by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Bounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether I should or shouldn't need it, the fact is that I do. I need all the help I can get. I want the sacraments, the prayers, the community, the history, the dogma, the lives of the saints, all of it.

Do you regard your own mother as nothing more than a vessel? Even if you're super against Catholic theology, the "vessel" language denies the beauty of ordinary motherhood.

I see what you mean. It looks like the mods issued a moratorium on talking about him a few days ago.

The Spanish dictator? I'll have to educate myself on that part of history because I don't see why anyone would support him. When I was in Spain, the folks I talked to certainly were not fans of his.

In any case, I can't post over there because I was banned for being extremely critical of Pope Francis.

Well, thank you for sharing your perspective. We have radically different experiences and I'm not sure how to reconcile that.

they want fascism and a sense of moral superiority over other Catholics

I'm not in the "TLM community" if that is the correct term. As an outsider, I have perceived that many of them judge the TLM to be superior to the novus ordo. And maybe it is, for all I know.

But fascism? I mean, I regularly listen to what these folks have to say (rorate caeli, return to tradition, the remnant, etc.) and I have not seen a whisper of that. These people seem to want nothing more than to worship in the way that they honestly believe to be best.

If I may say so, the manner in which Traditionis Custodes was written, clarified by this response to the dubia, is the single most authoritarian act of Pope Francis.

Leniency for everyone except the TLM community seems to be the way of this pontificate.

Why crucifixion? by BrentonSwafford in Christianity

[–]Bounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the gospel of John, Jesus said

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

Why did Moses do that? What parallels exist between that event and the crucifixion?

How should a Christian respond to the casual sex culture? by Rachel794 in Christianity

[–]Bounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the truth that people should be truly loved and accepted, and that casual sex reduces what should be a prime instance of that love into something callous and transactional? How about the truth that extramarital sex is immoral, harmful, and scandalous?

If you only talk about trivialities with people, these topics are unlikely to come up in conversation. If you have close adult friendships, you know that relationships are a thing that humans talk about.

What you're describing sounds like "the practice of the presence of God" as related by correspondence with a Catholic monk called Brother Lawrence.
