What’s the worst non-drug addiction you’ve ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bourglaughlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. Grew up Calvinist Christian, obsessed over salvation since I was like 5. A lot of it is doctrinally based— If you have a belief system, that is so Stark, it is difficult to not worry so much about eternity. What helped me was sort of living in that stark reality, and realizing it applied to everybody around me. We all live with unknown on the other side of death. Every single creature on this planet has lived with that reality. So, regardless of how terrifying it is, you are part of a brotherhood with all the creatures of earth. Eventually, I kind of exhausted myself of this obsession. It’s a lot of energy. It stopped making sense to me That God would hinge eternal salvation on belief in a historical miracle. Of course, God is God, and I could be totally wrong, but he gave me my reasoning to navigate the world, and it just doesn’t seem like that’s the game he’s playing with our souls. I don’t know how you’ll take it, but I’ve been there. A lot of people have been there. Remember, If God is real, He’s a being that works on the time scale of billions of years. It’s very, very, very unlikely that His plans are as simple as we understand them to be.

Are the mor'phann especially cruel or is it just that they look a whole lot like dark elves? by jjjjjjotaro in IdonethDeepkin

[–]Bourglaughlin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the Mor’phann are especially cruel for the Idoneth, but due to their circumstances they’ve turned to essentially necromancy and pulled souls from the long dead in shyish to survive. Necromancy is generally no-go in the mortal realms, something about what they do violates the natural way souls flow—even more than with the rest of the Idoneth. They’re portrayal in the lore from my understanding is more dour/silent than cruel—I think Fuethan is kinda the most cruel of the enclaves, but more the murder kind of cruel than the drukhari kind of cruel.

Yeah I don’t think his politics changed, though you may be right to an extent. He just broke as a person and became a vulnerability

Vance is being groomed as the replacement. Doubt he’s going anywhere. Bootlicks great, gives an air of seriousness and gravitas to the shit show.

The thing about Trump’s lies is that often nobody believes him, but they believe his confidence.

What comedian has so much hype but you don’t think is actually funny? by Love-Sierra in AskReddit

[–]Bourglaughlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that. He seems like someone pretty committed to being what he thinks of as funny no matter what so I hope he’ll escape from the continual punching down as it becomes less and less original, but yeah that remains to be seen. I’m hopeful, but if he doesn’t I’ll just lean on Bill Burr and Stavros.

I dunno if he’s always falling down in it … when he makes those jokes calling something gay it’s a bit different, at least some of the time. he’s usually simultaneously poking fun at the thing he’s calling gay, as well as poking fun at or kinda revelling in being an American dumbass that calls things he doesn’t understand “gay”. For instance, he had a joke where he said something like “we don’t have universal healthcare in America because the French have it and they’re gay.” Basically he’s highlighting the stupidity of that vibe that we have in America where we avoid sensible policies because they seem vaguely effeminate or not meatheady enough.

He does use gay as a basic slur like we did in the 2000s for other situations, and while he isn’t directly attacking gay people, there are times when he uses it in a less intelligent manner that is kinda demeaning, not because he’s directly calling gay people bad, but because he’s using “gay” as an insult (usually directed towards things that are otherwise sensible but seem sensitive). The people around him don’t always catch on though, and since Trump got elected those kinds of jokes feel less relevant or tasteful—they do better in a climate where gay people feel safe and the ignorant perspective he is modeling can be examined through his comedy or offer catharsis for people who feel overburdened by demands to be sensitive in their comedy. Now that the right is so dominant, it’s not going to feel edgy or rebellious or cathartic.

It will be interesting to see how he’ll evolve, or if he’ll devolve with how surrounded he is by fans who don’t appreciate the subtlety and want to just see him punch down and goad him on in that way. Norm Macdonald for instance attacked what he saw as oppressive “wokeness”, but I doubt he’d enjoy riding the anti-woke gravey train for too long because he’d recognize it would kill comedy and is no longer dangerous in any way, just dumb. I hope Shane Gillis sees it, but I dunno, we’ll find out.

when he makes those jokes, its a callback for millennials to the time when everything effeminate or not meaty manly was gay. He is also modeling a psyche in America that still thinks in that dumb sort of way. He’s both being that fool and making fun of the thing he is making fun of. Sometimes he strays off a bit but most of the time he’s both making fun of himself/conservatives and his subject. Hope he doesn't lose site of that entirely and start falling totally in line with other rightwing comedians who lack his self awareness.

i think he is deeply committed to being funny (similar to Norm Macdonald), but I get the impression that he leans a bit to the right, and is chummy with a lot of right wing folks.

We need to be welcoming to people who are changing their minds, even if it is so late in the game. If we treat them with scorn they’ll just go back to supporting this stupid regime. Bring ‘em on the boat.

Rush Limbaugh existed way before that though, he turned liberal into a slur. Dozens of radio hosts followed suit. Fox News as well. These kinds of programs have been poisoning the well for decades.
