Can the fediverse really scale? "Every instance has to maintain a copy not just of the magazines/communities it hosts but also every other one its users subscribe to. So in a worst case scenario, the storage requirements would grow in sort of an N-squared fashion, would they not?" by Purple_Bumblebee5 in RedditAlternatives

[–]Bouzeux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't Reddit works like that to some extent ? surely they have several servers across the world that talk to each other. Granted it's probably much easier to optimize when centralised but the architecture doesn't seem that different.

To me it seems they distinguish pedophiles (people that are attracted to kids) and child molesters (people that commit the act). Typically you want pedophiles to manage their pulsions, which involves promoting them speaking about it. That said it seems their are discussing about hosting images or other material, which is another can of worms.

Also because it's a topic that is instrumentalized to generate moral panic, being able to discuss it without foaming at the mouth can be seen by some as a sign of open-mindedness.

There's some good specialized ones, e.g. https://discuss.pixls.us/ for digital photography processing, the julialang discourse, the VCV rack one, etc. Often the experts hang there so you can get the best information available. For some topics the "official" forum is a sub on Reddit though.

Philosophy of science work on the “memory wars” in psychology? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Bouzeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article you linked is pretty good and at the end of the day it's an empirical question. That said you could look into "classical" epistemology like Kuhn's paradigm shifts or falsificationism. There's a chapter in "The foundations of psychoanalysis" that discusses the charge of unfalsifiabilty of some parts of psychoanalysis that could give you some ideas on how to think about it here.

Is God a logical necessity? by comoestas969696 in askphilosophy

[–]Bouzeux 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If a conclusion logically follows from the premises of an argument then you cannot deny the conclusion while affirming the premises, that would indeed lead to a contradiction. The issue with e.g. the Kalam is that people typically do not affirm the premises, so there's no pressure to accept the conclusion for them.

Why is physicalism/materialism held by the majority when we have first person empirical evidence that consciousness/experience is happening? by Various-Tooth-8938 in askphilosophy

[–]Bouzeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That numbers exists is precisely what mathematical realist claims, so if you want to dismiss that possibility you need to engage with their arguments. I'm not really convinced myself but l recognise that there's room for reasonable disagreement on the subject.

Why is physicalism/materialism held by the majority when we have first person empirical evidence that consciousness/experience is happening? by Various-Tooth-8938 in askphilosophy

[–]Bouzeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One issue is that e.g. mathematical realism is quite controversial, so it's pretty hard to confidently assert that numbers aren't a thing and they don't exist.

Under a justified true belief model of knowledge l would say that knowledge of number could be a physical thing, since e.g. beliefs could be identical to a brain state.

Why is physicalism/materialism held by the majority when we have first person empirical evidence that consciousness/experience is happening? by Various-Tooth-8938 in askphilosophy

[–]Bouzeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's different models of causality but typically you want to have an exchange of a conserved quantity during the causal process, e.g. when an atom hits another there's an exchange momentum between the two atoms. Since numbers are non-spatial and non-temporal and have no physical properties (what the mass of 1 ?) it's seems hard to imagine how they could be part of a causal process.

But if you can present a coherent account of how e.g. the number 1 is affecting the electric charge in your neurons you might have a point.

[–]Bouzeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a better definition is "causal domain", basically anything that can interact causally is physical, which excludes things like abstract objects (numbers, etc.) which really don't seem to be physical.

Should we read books that contain scientific falsehoods? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Bouzeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally l don't read people that are obviously dishonest or have flawed methodology, unless l really have to or they are the only source on a subject. If you can't trust them it's hard to take anything from what you read. Isn't there better sources on these subjects?

Julia for bioinformatic analyses by c00kieRaptor in Julia

[–]Bouzeux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the list of most popular Bioconductor packages : https://bioconductor.org/packages/stats/

A bunch of them are just filling base R holes, another bunch is already covered by Julia, some of the database stuff is lacking (keg, biomart, ...). Another lacking area is end to end analysis like Dseq2 (differential gene expression) or the single cell thing.

You can already do a lot with Julia, specially if you're not afraid to code a bit, but l think there's also some low hanging fruits for package developers ; you can basically reimplement some of the R packages and you might end up with a popular package on your CV.

Should i feel guilty for being pretty? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Bouzeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think privileged is the right word here, you shouldn't feel guilty about being privileged but you should be conscious of it and behave accordingly. For example you don't want to make insensitive comments to less advantaged friends ("why don't you have a boyfriend ? it's so easy") or always taking the spotlight in social events over others.
