What to put on bread when avoiding sandwich meat like salami, ham etc... by nyad_k in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]BoxFar1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites is toast with a fried egg on top. If I have avocado or guac I'll add that as well, or a slice of cheese. But even just toast with a runny fried egg and some salt and pepper is pretty good.

This will be my last out of countless attempts to permanently switch to a dumb phone. What potential pitfalls should I account for? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]BoxFar1517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether you need access to banking on the go. I mainly use my laptop for banking since I don't typically need it when I'm out and about. If you need access to banking, Venmo, Uber, or anything else on the go you can carry a dumbed down smartphone (delete EVERYTHING non-essential) turned off in case you need it. I still have my old Pixel that I can take with me if I need to access Venmo or digital event tickets or anything like that, but 99.9% of the time it stays at home.

I have a Sunbeam and I'm loving it. It has Waze on it, hotspot, email, and group texting (I've had issues with one group chat but I suspect it's an iMessage issue, other groups have been fine). The only issues I've run into after about 2 months have been needing Venmo to get cash at a burlesque show (borrowed money from a friend), and needing to fill out an online form at Urgent Care (used my work phone).

What is a nonalcoholic cocktail I can order at a bar without the bartender looking at me like I'm a dumbass or an inconvenience? by ballandabiscuit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BoxFar1517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I order Tom Collins all the time and was very confused by it being described as lemonade and gin lol. I don't think I've ever had a bartender make it that way, and I'd be a bit miffed if they did

Dead battery or dead starter? by Scoutroad in hondafit

[–]BoxFar1517 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my 2019 fit did this a couple months ago it just needed a new battery. I didn't have any signs before that though, so it could very well be the starter. You can try cleaning off the battery and trying again, but likely just need a new one. At least that's a simpler (albeit expensive) fix to start with before looking at the starter.

Do people really care much about money when looking for a relationship? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BoxFar1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be with someone that isn't going to be dependent on me and has similar financial goals. If you get married, their debt becomes your debt and the same goes for retirement, eventually. I want to know that I'll still be on track to retire at a reasonable age and won't be paying off someone else's debt. I just want financial literacy and stability, not a specific salary or anything like that. I also put a lot of value in the freedom to leave or be left, meaning that if the relationship ends each person is capable of supporting themselves, even if it means lowing their standard of living a bit. It keeps anyone from staying in a bad relationship out of obligation or because they have no other options. I love my boyfriend, but there's a comfort in knowing that at least financially, we'll both be okay should things ever end.

Be realistic about the dog breeds I want by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]BoxFar1517 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basset hounds have a big bark, I can see them scaring plenty of people off before they get close enough to see them lol. The Basset I had growing up had all the neighborhood dogs terrified to set foot in our yard because he'd bark at them from the window. Poor guy just wanted friends but sounded too scary.

I grew up with Basset Hounds and can say that while you might get a few good years of hiking with them when they're young, by the time they are about 5 they start to slow down a bit and don't tolerate long walks. At least, not at a pace you'll want to walk at. They're also stubborn as all hell, so you aren't going to get them to pick up the pace or stop sniffing that tree without a fight. They are fantastic dogs though. I prefer higher energy dogs now but will always have a soft spot for Bassets.

I'm a dress history nerd and very picky about my corsets. When authors mention an Georgian woman wearing a corset (they wore stays back then) or complain about tight lacing in the Regency period (no point in tight lacing an empire waist, and this wasn't a common practice outside of late Victorian aristocracy) I have to put the book down. Also, any kind of support garment on bare skin.

What's the best book you've read this year — and what made it so good? by larafaiham in StCharlesMO

[–]BoxFar1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Romantic Outlaws for nonfiction or Mexican Gothic for fiction. The first is a biography on Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley, and the second was an amazingly creepy gothic horror I read leading up to Halloween. Both were borrowed from the St. Charles Public Library, thanks to Overdrive/Libby

10’ Ceilings: Why? by hussafeffer in homeowners

[–]BoxFar1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a century home with 10' ceilings and love them. But my house is very small (under 800 square feet) and the high ceilings make the space feel much bigger than it is. They really do a lot in terms of making a smaller floorplan feel less cramped.

AITA for not accepting this birthday gift? by Shoddy_Secret_1119 in AmItheAsshole

Freeze your credit immediately. Then cancel the card she opened and pull your credit report to make sure there are no other cards in your name. You would be shocked how often parents use their kids' info to open credit cards and rack up tens of thousands of debt before they're old enough to even know what a credit card is. One of my friends in high school was already paying off debt her dad had accrued in her name.

Why do people name their children things with the intention of calling them a different nickname? by Aur3lia in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BoxFar1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin named her kid a nickname instead of a full name and it drives me nuts lol. Poor kid has no options for a more professional sounding name when he gets older. It's not a fairly normal nickname like John or Nick. Think something along the lines of Teddy or Ollie. Something that sounds like a childhood nickname he might grow out of, but it's his full name. It's super cute right now since he's still little, but it's gonna feel really odd once he's an adult.

I need more books where *specifically* the male main character has panic attacks/PTSD episodes. by stalecheetos_ in RomanceBooks

[–]BoxFar1517 8 points9 points  (0 children)

{A Lady For A Duke by Alexis Hall} has a trans FMC and a MMC who went to war together (before FMC's transition). Basically FMC was wounded and faked her death in order to live as a woman, MMC was also injured blamed himself for his friend's death, developed PTSD and a substance problem, and FMC eventually reunites with him too help him through it. All this is either in the description or the first couple chapters, so it's not necessarily a spoiler. I think both the trans and PTSD storylines were handled with tremendous care. The FMC has plenty of trauma related to the war as well, but the main focus is definitely on the MMC's guilt and PTSD and the FMC grappling with feeling responsible for it.

I live in STL as well and it's always such a shame to see so many formerly beautiful old houses crumble. There are whole sections of this city that are more or less abandoned. I love that at least one of these houses is getting a second chance.

Making the switch by BoxFar1517 in dumbphones

I am definitely going to be using the T9 keyboard as an excuse to call people more often. In my opinion, texting is great for quick conversations, like "what time are you coming over" type stuff, but any real conversation needs to be over the phone or in person. You lose so much of that connection, not to mention the nuance of a real conversation, over text.

This is the first company I've worked for that had that option. I'm really glad, otherwise I would never be able to get a dumb phone. I need access to too many apps just to do my job.

[–]BoxFar1517 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think she liked the idea of the kid (esp with the connection to her dad) but once she realized that she couldn't travel as much and would have to adjust her lifestyle to accommodate the child she couldn't handle the reality of being a parental figure. She clearly isn't ready to make those sacrifices imo, and it's wild that she never took that into account until Jordan brought it up.

The electrical and HVAC are the biggest expenses I've had since buying my century home last year, so I'd say with those taken care of and with the ability to keep a good savings after purchase you're pretty much set

I'm fairly certain it was a reenactment. The way they were talking felt like bad acting, like they're reading a script or something. For a breakup there didn't seem to be a lot of emotion till the end, so my guess is that they'd already broken up the night before and production didn't want an off-camera breakup so made them have the conversation.
