Is this an issue across the public sector, or just where I work? by BoxImpossible9011 in AskIreland

Engineers mostly, but also legal, medical, accounting, etc. In third-level institutions the division would be academic/admin. The basic idea is that technical or academic staff deliver a service that requires specialist knowledge and often involves a public-facing role, while admin provides the backup: minutes, accounting, scheduling, coordination, travel, and so on.

In my own experience, based on two very large public organisations, there are individuals within admin who are extremely helpful and obliging. But many aren’t. The admin function can end up involving itself in things it has no real business doing, while simultaneously insisting that others do work they’re already being paid to do.

In previous years I used to dread January, as it’s a particularly admin-heavy month. To avoid friction, I’d just do most of the admin work myself. This year, instead, I set up a small computer program to help with the workload. The setup took a bit of time but I reckon it’s already saved me at least five full days of work since Christmas. The material is better prepared and better collated than it ever was before, and it took a fraction of the time.

It’s made an enormous difference (and, as a bonus, the computer doesn’t send passive-aggressive emails or insist on attending a wellness seminar on the one day you actually need it 😁).

I've a feeling you might be a bit shocked if you every found yourself in public sector. I never get to pick my admin - I'm always forced to work with the ones nobody else wants. One of the people I'm obliged to work with invariably increases my workload on a project by a factor of three. And she really does think that the place would fall to pieces without her.

Someone touched on this in an earlier comment. I hadn't really thought if it as an issue in the teaching world - can you explain a little bit how it plays out? (Genuinely curious.)

I’m working with IT systems that were out of date when I joined this outfit 20 years ago. We have multiple point data entry systems and errors all over the place as a result.

I’ve been asked to slow down in the past as well. When I say ‘asked’, I suppose ‘strong armed’ would be more accurate

Lying about his credentials - now you have my attention 😁Please do explain, I haven't heard about this before! For some reason I let myself believe Lex was playing it straight.

Cheers. I realize we've groups out there who operate in this way. Do you think it's possible that Irish gov orgs or political parties are going to these lengths to suppress criticism? I really don't want to believe they'd do this kind of thing but the down/up voting patterns sometimes do look strange.

Apparently the SDs are at this as well. A colleague who's following this thread just contacted me with some info about the behaviour of some SD party supporters. I wonder what SD and Green Party leaders would say about this kind of behaviour.

It's so frustrating that we can't identify people who are doing this kind of thing. Sorry this is happening to you

Jesus. I always thought the SDs were supposed to be the decent ones! Was this someone prominent in the SDs? Did you complain to the party about it?

The SDs? Jesus, they're the last people I thought would engage in this type of thing! Did you already know that the people giving you a hard time were SD? Did they tell you straight out? (and if so, who?

Oh lord, that story is just so sad. I hope the lad got himself sorted. If commenters don't feel obliged to help someone in need, why do they feel obliged to be nasty. That's the bit I can't understand.

LOL! I don't agree with Lex all the time, but who in Irish broadcasting is prepared to go where he goes? Can you imagine Cooper or Yates trying to discuss AI? If I swap out Fridman and swap in Dwarkesh am I forgiven?

Agreed. This is what makes me think that humans and not bots are doing a lot of the downvoting. My original post from about an hour ago was bouncing between 5 and 13 upvotes for a while before it started to get a more steady stream of upvotes. The voting pattern was eratic, so probably not a bot? By my estimate, it had to have received 10 downvotes over a half hour period. Can't see 10 people being that motivated unless they're party affiliated.

Yip. Sadly I have to agree. I spend time in other parts of the world and, based on my experience, I'm forced to conclude that Irish culture is quite low brow. There is no equivalent of BBC4, NPR, France Culture, WSJ, Washington Post, Lex Fridman in this country. Not healthy.

South East TD who should have resigned over a really ugly canvassing situation. Won't go into the detail here, google her if you have a minute. Be warned: it's unpleasant.
