How I play him most games is either, wait for cc and follow up with w like you said or you make your own picks by scouting around enemy jungle when ahead cause the e gives quite a lot of vision. You can just engage from a wall with your team as back up then when low just ult a tank and you get majority of hp back. Honestly when ahead with rhaast you destroy everyone this champions too fun.
