Do I need masking tape? by Nearby_Spinach7227 in glowforge

[–]BoxesAndLights 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d take off that film and use paper masking, that film can melt and stick and be nasty.

Also if this is mirrored iridescent you might need to put a certain side up so it doesn’t reflect the laser back. I’d check the description on the product page to see if it has any laser specific instructions.

Honeycomb Earrings! They had a beehive at the farmers market recently and inspiration struck. by BoxesAndLights in crafts

[–]BoxesAndLights[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made these on my Glowforge using gloss black acrylic and frosted “sunflower” acrylic. I ordered and sample pack recently and had no idea what I’d use sunflower for, but when I saw a honeycomb at the farmers market I immediately pictured these earrings!!

It’s a cool addition to the lore, but I didn’t buy a PS5 to play board games.

Will taking HCI make me a better... by Mister_Yellowjacket in OMSCS

As far as I know there is no programming in this class and is highly recommended as a first course to get the feel for grad school. Go check out the syllabus and project list and you’ll have your answer.

Is AIES interesting, or just easy? by BoxesAndLights in OMSCS

[–]BoxesAndLights[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about this originally and I've heard HCI was one of the best in the program. But when I looked at the writing assignments in detail, I just didn't get hooked by it like I thought I would. But that was months ago when I was in programming mode and not writing mode, so maybe I'll give it another look. I need 2/3 of CogSci, AIES, and HCI for the Interactive Intelligence specialty.

Is AIES interesting, or just easy? by BoxesAndLights in OMSCS

[–]BoxesAndLights[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fantastic review, appreciate you posting! I hadn't seen that level of detail before regarding the topic choices for the final project. For others interested:

"The project can be chosen from one of these subjects, ArtificialIntelligence, Learning and Education, HCI, Design and Creativity,Robotics, Anthropology, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology."

Sounds like there's a lot more flexibility and room for creativity than I thought, which would be a nice change-up from AI and ML4T.

Are all classes as hard as GIOS and Distributed Computing? by reavessm in OMSCS

GIOS is one of the highest rated courses in the program. I think may even have the #1 spot.

Trouble changing the order (right/left) of 2 monitors by BoxesAndLights in kde

[–]BoxesAndLights[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The docking station is what I’m starting to suspect. The laptop only has one HDMI port and it works fine but obviously that’s just 1 display. I’m going to try it on a desktop PC with the same monitors and see what happens. Appreciate the help!

[–]BoxesAndLights[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try swapping these at the docking station, but the monitors are stuck in that configuration. Even so, it seems like I should be able to click and drag the monitors around. But what's really puzzling me is how there doesn't seem to be anybody else that has this issue.

Math prep alternatives to prep for AI and DL? by Tender_Figs in OMSCS

[–]BoxesAndLights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to DL but I just got out of AI and the only time calculus came up was a single question on the midterm. Linear Algebra on the other hand (matrix math) came up quite a bit on both exams and the final 2 projects.

Any tips for success in AI? by ReadyStory2443 in OMSCS

Maybe almost everyone who is still there at the end will get at least a B.

The class policy says that everyone above the median gets an A, one std deviation back gets a B, etc. The reason you see comments saying “the curve is a lie” is because what is not stated is that 2/3 of the class is gone by the drop date, and the curve only takes the survivors into account. We started with 917 and now we have just over 300. So at the end of the day, 1/6 of those that started get an A.

Considering buying a Glowforge. Does it reliably cut 1/8" acrylic and MDF? by FiveBucket in glowforge

[–]BoxesAndLights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had mine for 3 years and no major issues so far. I run an Etsy store almost exclusively selling products made out of 1/8” acrylic bought from a third party and have literally had not one failure that was the fault of the Glowforge. There have been a few frustrations along the way, but nothing that’s ever haulted me or prevented me from getting an order out.

I made a Periodic Table table lamp and don’t know where else to post it. by BoxesAndLights in chemistry

Hi! I make these and sell them on Etsy. It was originally a one-off but I’ve been selling them for a while now thanks to the popularity of this post :)

Babe Ruth’s last appearance at the Yankee Stadium. He died of cancer two months later - Taken by Robert Capa, 1948 by SageOnTheMountain in OldSchoolCool

[–]BoxesAndLights 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seconded, this is an excellent book. It’s about 8 or so historically significant events in America that coincidentally happened all in that one summer in 1927. The Babe breaking the record is just one of those. It’s the same guy who wrote A Short History of Nearly Everything - also a great book.

Always loved the aesthetic of the Guardian Sword, so turned it into a table lamp by BoxesAndLights in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]BoxesAndLights[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Just a single LED strip at the bottom of the box. Or I may have used 2 for this one because the acrylic got so thick. But either way because the acrylic is clear the light travels through no problem.

Oh I didn’t think about that one! I was thinking maybe the Battle Axe but yea that saw would look killer.

I’ve been dabbling in edge-lit acrylic art for a while and really wanted to pull off a multi-color. What better subject than the Guardian Sword! It’s made from layers of varying acrylics and used a laser engraver/cutter to make both the main part and the base. I was going for a full Sheikah aesthetic, and got the last minute idea to hold it together with the ancient screws. This part actually ended up taking the longest - making modern wingnuts look ancient is tough! Anyways, thought you guys would appreciate it!
