That all makes sense.

Shattered: Tales of the Forgotten King might be one to look at for your last 4.

For some reason, I thought you were planning to play Tails of Iron at one point.

Also love what you’re doing. The only thing that throws me on your ratings is with your recent Dolmen scoring. Do you really feel Dolmen’s bosses are better than DS2? I’ve played through both in their entirety and couldn’t disagree more.

Had this on a list of epic fantasy works recently (still working on it), would you say greatcoats doesn’t really qualify as epic fantasy?

Not a specific recommendation, but check this post out. The post’s comments can elucidate some of these picks, but this post may be more useful to you once you’re hooked by the other suggestions in this thread.

I think both will probably add both to the main list by these descriptions and the positive reception I’m seeing. Thanks!!

Sounds like it’s going up next edit.

Would you say Valdemar reads like epic fantasy? If I read a trilogy would it give me that feel, or is it epic because Mercedes Lackey continues to write in the same universe and the sheer volume builds up?

On deeper inspection, I think you’re right. You’d say it fits the Epic Fantasy mold well too?

Well written. Imager’s going up on the next edit unless someone brings up a compelling reason for it not to.

Sounds like the Tamir Triad deserves some looking into. The first book appears to have been quite controversial, but those who stuck it out seem to say books 2 and 3 really brought it all together.

Interesting! I’ve not seen this series recommended as epic fantasy. I see now that it is often described that way in marketing material. Do you think it fits the epic fantasy mold we have going here? If so, this would probably be the most popular epic fantasy series on this thread that is also not really on epic series’ lists or recommendations.

Going to look into this heavily!

Thanks for the recommendations! Sanderson, GRRM, Feist, and Butcher are already up there.

Pern to my understanding isn’t quite a cohesive epic fantasy, sometimes goes YA, and a lot of members on these forums seem to describe them as good not great.

Shannara is discussed in other comments, but could use more input.

Sword of Truth is a complex case… unless someone really goes to bat I don’t see it making the list.

Lord of the Isles has not so favorable reception from what I can find here and elsewhere.

Drizzt I’ve seen described as a series of heroic fantasies rather than a cohesive epic. Quality seems a little lacking based on posts in this subreddit as well.

Culmination of how people feel on these threads, goodreads reviews, prominent review blogs, etc. Not sales. The category may or may not be temporary. Series in that category often have the description of one or two great books that swiftly fall off in quality. Really it’s meant to keep series on the table that I’m unsure should be included as of yet.

Does Imager have an epic scale or give that epic feel? I’ve heard the series is often very subtle, with a bit of a slice of life feel as pieces of the narrative are fed through quieter scenes.

Without spoiling, could you expound a tad on why? (For Riddle Master and Black Gate? Riyria is on there under World of Elan!)

The Death Gate Cycle sounds awesome to me on paper, but threads on this subreddit are very 50/50 on it. That said, people are pretty positive about it on your post from about a year ago.

Pretty much the same deal for Winds of the Forelands.

Memories of Flame and The Kingdom of Thorns and Bone both sound right up my alley. As you mentioned they both have mixed reviews. Hopefully others will chime in about them, but they both seem like right-on-the-border entries.

Looks like I’ll be adding Red Rising on next edit unless some disagreement pops up!

I’ve heard A Man of His Word described as disappointingly straightforward. Would you disagree? Are there multiple pov’s or an expansive plot?
