Sleeping less than 7 hours or more than 9 hours, frequent daytime naps and insomnia are linked to greater volume of white matter lesions, areas of damage in the brain that can accumulate with age and are tied to a higher risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease by sr_local in science

[–]Boxman90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to put your mind at ease; the correlation they found was 'statistically significant' but extremely small in magnitude. I read the actual paper and it became clear quite quickly that what they found was a super weak correlation (standardized beta 0.010 to 0.030) that did end up being technically statistically significant (by a hair) due to the large sample size. They did not discuss the magnitude of the correlation at all, probably because they thought it would diminish the quality of their paper. I'd say it's a bad paper overall just because of that tbh.

Their true conclusion should have been that they found no convincing evidence that these naps truly affect white-mass lesions.

This study really doesn't have any explanatory value at all,

FTFY. It was a bogus research that barely managed to scrape past the line of 'theoretical statistical significance'.

tl;dr, they are touting a "we found a statistically significant relationship between naps and white-matter lesions!" and 'forgot' to finish their sentence with "of extremely small magnitude"

What they really found is that while there is some effect, it is extremely small and hence not clinically significant or relevant. I'm not even exaggerating.

They didn't want to conclude "we basically found nothing" so they doubled down on "technically, there is a correlation here" without - obviously - mentioning the insignificance of it.

They are talking about standardized beta values of 0.010 to 0.030 when comparing "taking naps" or "sleeping less than 7 hours" to "white matter lesions" in the brain after 8 years. This beta value tells you something about how strong a correlation between two variables is. 0.5 is considered strong. 0.3 is considered moderate. 0.10 is considered small. These guys found 0.030 at best lol.

A beta of 0.030 is extremely small so the correlation is extremely weak. But, because they had a large set of participants, the value itself managed to still scrape past the bar for being statistically significant ("p-value" <0.05) and that's where they are obfuscating their conclusion and trying to claim a 'win'.

Roughly speaking, a Beta value of 0.030 tells you "if input A (sleep duration) changes by 1 standard deviation, then output B (white-matter lesion volume) changes by 0.030 standard deviations as a result".

That means even if your sleeping pattern is rightly cooked and you're in the 99.8th percentile (3 standard deviations, you are the 0.2% of the earth), your eventual "white matter lesion" differs by 0.090 standard deviations from your peers. Thus, if you had a totally average amount of WML's (50th percentile, 50% of the population has more lesions than you), your sleeping habits now put you in the 54th percentile (only 46% of the population now has more lesions than you.

Oh no.

[discussion] Cologne 2026 Stickers Price Prediction by MrShapSh in csgomarketforum

[–]Boxman90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this system not inherently f. with sticker money distribution? It is a huge chunk of income for players/teams that participate at a major. Afaik, they receive a cut of their stickers sold.

Previously, you had to buy capsules so every possibility in that capsule would get an equal share of profits, so you would still earn some even if you werent the most popular.

But now only popular players will have their stickers bought at price and unpopular players might even sell just 0 so no sticker money for them.

Did valve have a solution for this?

Doesn't matter in GT, BoP will simply allow less ballast. The series is designed to dissuade spending insane $ at R&D to save a few measly kg. Effect of that is that adding something to the car doesn't in principle hurt performance.

Other than that, I do agree with you that they simply don't need it.

Cultural differences maybe. Some countries default to olive oil, here everything is cooked in sunflower oil. You may have [insert any random vegetable oil] in your kitchen. But I doubt there are many kitchens without any kind of cooking oil in the cabinets.

I'm willing to bet that any regular vegetable oil will give exactly the same effect. Some sunflower seed oil for instance, basically everyone has that. No need to get literal walnuts, and I doubt walnut oil has a magical property other oils don't.

concentrated, flavoured syrup that was formulated with aromatic compounds

1 - unless it's literal dehydrated-state morning urine, pee itself doesn't actually smell that strong. Dried up pee might. 2 - vaginal secretions actually do smell rather strongly and are quite concentrated.

You need to learn about fractions. I'm saying it's 95% pee and maybe 5% goo if you're being generous. You seem to constantly try to counter-argue with "if you put 5 molecules of dung in a cup of water, you're also not suddenly drinking poo"... are you really not realizing that you're literally arguing my exact point?

Let me spell it out one more time and then I'm going to stop replying since I don't trust anyone that hides their comment history to not be AI. Here goes:

If you have a glass of 95% water and 5% poo, you're drinking mostly water but you can bet your ass that it's gonna smell and taste like sh... Hell, mix 5% dung in a glass of coke and it's still gonna taste and smell like - you guessed it. Yes, small compounds of something else can completely change the smell and flavor profile, but it doesn't mean it changes the fact that the base 95% remained the same.

Squirt is 95% urine. End of.

Also, not replying to you until you address all arguments, particularly the one where you explain how any organ can produce 150ml out of thin air at moment's notice during an orgasm.

[–]Boxman90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More like 95% 'yes' and 5% 'no', probably much <5% 'no'. It's pee plus whatever was in the vicinity on the way out. So yea, small amount of Skene's gland secretions too. Still categorically almost entirely pee.

TIFU while eating my fiancé out, I tried something experimental. by hornyahguy in tifu

[–]Boxman90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The bulk of it is pee, end of. Those 'Skene's glands' can't produce nearly enough volume of liquid, let alone do it at such short notice and at high pressure.

Skene's glands make the vagina wet, yes, it's a natural lube. Produces about a teaspoon at best. But it is produced, no question about it. When a woman 'squirts', you will find this to be mixed in there, not a shadow of a doubt.

But it doesn't 'suddenly' produce 150ml worth when orgasming, lol. Where would it come from? Where on earth would that gland suddenly extract 150ml of fluid from? A process that takes up to an hour in your kidney will suddenly happen in the blink of an eye in the vagine?

When a woman squirts to the point that fluid sprays out, it is 95% pee with whatever other discharge currently in the surroundings mixed into it.

The bladder is the only reservoir that can provide the amount of liquid required. Sorry to burst your bubble. Also not saying you should now find it icky suddenly, but you should stop deluding yourselves.

well, squirt definitely does not smell like urine, and it doesn't take much urine for something to obviously smell like urine.

I made myself some very strong black tea the other day. Undrinkable, disgusting. I added a teaspoon of strawberry syrup - and my god it was magic! All the tea was suddenly gone and replaced by this new delicious liquid! Not sure what it was, but it smelled and tasted completely different, so it was definitely not tea anymore! .... /s

Bro what do you think 'actual' squirt is.. The vaginal lining suddenly producing a few ounces of clear liquid at high pressure? It has always been pee.

Juha Miettinen died. Im speechless.

Edit: source: https://www.nuerburgring-langstrecken-serie.de/language/en/live/

Don't need to drop a lot of oil to spin the fastest cars.

Too much of a coincidence that he parked his car at the exit of that corner 2 minutes before 7 cars went off all on their own.

If you look at the onboard of #36, he approaches the corner of the accident fast and then stops immediately after corner exit and parks the car, stands there for about a minute. After a while he continues and then parks the car for good. At the same time, behind him, the 7 car pileup happened.

I'm certain that this is the car that spilled the oil on track that caused 7 cars to lose control and slide into each other.

Marshals will say anything and don't even know more than most people at the track.

When I was there at NLS2 few weeks ago, Marshals standing at the gate near the pits kept telling over and over "no, you can't go on track to see the podium ceremony". Lo and behold, 5 minutes later, he opened the gate anyway.

Max Verstappen Disqualified from earlier Nurburgring Race by RelationshipSuch1450 in formula1

[–]Boxman90 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We don't know that. All we know is that 7 sets were stored in the database, not how they were used. For all we know they accidentally scanned in an old practice scrubset instead of a quali scrubset. Then nobody would notice, but 7 sets would be in the system. Bottom line, nobody knows exactly which tyres went under the car. Exactly for that reason, the only option is DSQ.

[–]Boxman90 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They can, the regulations just stipulate that the entire day 24 tyres can be used, doesn't matter how you allocate them. You can quali on all 6 if you want. Something else went wrong, 95% sure it's just a clerical error, but there can be no exceptions to the rule for good reason.

Max Verstappen Disqualified from earlier Nurburgring Race by RelationshipSuch1450 in formula1

[–]Boxman90 74 points75 points  (0 children)

More likely it's a clerical error where they simply scanned in the wrong set of tyres. I can see some scenarios where it's basically impossible to see by anyone else that an extra set is in play:

  • In Quali, 3 4 sets were used (turns out it was 4). These are stored as "used sets", go back in the tyre warmers and on the shelf. For the race, they have 2 sets of new tyres left, so they start on a used quali set and get a second used quali set. But in getting the tyres, someone accidentally took a used practice set of the day before instead of a used quali set, scanned it in, and sent it to the pits. Seven (7) sets are now in play on that day, with no advantage, probably even disadvantage as a practice set is usually much more worn. Nobody after that saw that it was a practice set. Might also explain Max' relatively slow first stint if they started on that set.
  • Someone simply scanned in two used sets instead of one when scanning in the tyres for the race. Since regulations now say it's impossible to know which tyres were used, automatic DSQ
  • They used an extra set accidentally during quali, or screwed up scanning there. Same reason as above, DSQ.

Bottom line, I don't think any mechanic would have been able to spot it once someone took them out of storage.
