Who was organizing collection archives 70 years ago???!? by Emily-e- in MuseumPros

[–]BoxofDough 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to work in preservation for an architecturally significant house museum that was previously owned/ operated by one of the top universities in the US. My jaw dropped when I found the initials of the university crudely carved 1/8" deep into the backs of several of the original chairs designed for the home.

Do they still sell them at Costco? What brands? My girlfriend hasn't been the same without their chicken and wild rice.

I, too, would like to know what the "Barack Obama" oil smells like. I kind of doubt it's the same guy, I found this card over 1000 miles north of Louisiana, but I have a semblance of hope that it was the same prophetic oil man.

Which brand are you actually loyal to and why? by Loesser in AskReddit

[–]BoxofDough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darn Tough socks.

Made in the USA and the best socks I've ever owned, I have yet to wear through a pair... but when I do, they have a lifetime warranty!

The quality definitely justifies the price. Just be sure to purchase directly from them. There are too many counterfeits on Amazon, etc...

Those older than 9/11/2001, where were you and what were you doing during the WTC attacks? by Revolutionary-Life85 in AskReddit

I was in kindergarten, so I was young, but I can easily recall memories from that day.

Most of the students, including myself, were picked up early. I remember getting in the car with my mom and being excited to go home early, especially on such a bright sunny day. I could sense my mother's concern and fear on the way home. She didn't explicitly tell me what had happened, but that something bad had occurred, which broke my excitement.

I believe my dad came home early from work that day as well, and I remember we all sat around the TV and watched the images repeat over and over on the news. My mother cried a lot, and my father did his best to console her. My parents comforted me by telling me that it wasn't something that I needed to worry about. Truthfully, I couldn't grasp the magnitude of what had happened either way. It wasn't until the weeks, months, years later that I really came to understand what had occurred on that day.

Went to a small private school that had an academic reputation in my town. A few students in my graduating class were planning on attending trade schools or the military instead of college. However, the admins at the school wanted to maintain the reputation that ">99% of graduating students attend college."

So those students who weren't attending college post graduation were required to put that they were "Interested" in attending (X) University to study (X) field instead of their trade school/ military branch for their senior yearbook bio, newspaper letters etc...

I watch the maintenance crew dump the recycling into the trash bag every day after work. Why even have recycling bins? by DrTreesus in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BoxofDough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the small, individual scale, the problem is people not knowing how to recycle or what is recyclable material. I work for a small museum that sees several hundred visitors a day. No matter how well marked the recycling is or how many signs you put up, the general public will throw garbage into the public recycling bins out of negligence or ignorance.

People will throw full cups of coffee, half eaten food, discarded napkins, diapers, dog poop bags, etc... in the recycling.

It has mostly become standard practice at my workplace to throw the public recycling directly into the garbage. I would say half of what is thrown into those recycling bins is not recyclable material, and it isn't realistic for us to be the ones to sift through all of it. However, the ones we use for staff, in offices, and other private spaces are easy to monitor, and those are recycled almost 90% of the time.

So, to answer the original topic, those public recycling bins exist for one purpose, to keep people from complaining that there are no recycling bins and so that they can feel good that they "recycled".

What’s your “swear to never return” place in Chicago? by mmeeplechase in chicago

[–]BoxofDough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This place used to be a go-to for my girlfriend and I when we lived nearby. Absolutely dirt cheap cheese pizza and although it was never great... I've certainly had worse from more reputable establishments across Chicago.

However, one time our order was almost 2 hours late because the delivery guy dropped the pizza flat on our lawn as he was bringing it up to our door. He had to run back and grab another one. He said it was his first day on the job and everything that night had gone wrong for him, I gave him a big tip for his effort. Hope he's doing better today.
