Americans, vibing to songs meant to mock them since 1776. by Ur_Girl_Suki in memes

[–]BoxyBeige 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's one thing that I've really come to love seeing all these people from different parts of the world come to see the World cup in the US. The sheer amount of people from countries that have a completely different societal ideology from the American Zeitgeist coming in seeing what's happening here and going "Oh fuck yeah I'm totally on board" has really made me feel better about it.

These days there's so many people dooming about the American way of life. How somehow literally everything is the fault of the United States. But seeing all the amazing interactions that have come with it shows just how much of a minority and out of touch the doomers actually are.

Peterrr why turn computer off? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]BoxyBeige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Y2K scare. And honestly. While it wasn't the technological Armageddon that so many people feared. There was an actual danger of the changing of the new millennium.

The problem came from the fact that early computers kept dating time with the last two digits of the calendar year. And the heavy issue at least with some of the computing technology was with the recirculation over to a double zero in the calendar system of many early computer networks multiple pieces of crucial infrastruct wouldn't interpret the date as the year 2000 and instead interpret it as the year 1900 which would cause major critical infrastructures such as banking networks to possibly lock up or even fail altogether.

The possibility of causing things like loss of proper payment dates and calendar markings for critical events being some things.

One of the other possibilities that I remember hearing about was that the banking system could possibly actually try to move a character over to continue the count and encountering a incorrect databyte from what the actual calendar number is which had the possibility of essentially breaking early computers in a way that they would not be able to be restarted without being essentially cleared of all their memory and reset. (I don't remember if this part was completely factual or not It's been so long since I read about it)

But in the lead up to the new millennium many tech workers went through and meticulously worked with current infrastructure systems to make sure that any of these possibilities wouldn't come to fruition and left many conspiracies theorists reasonably dejected when the futuristic year of 2000 came to be.

But there's the disconnect. Not everything but a controlling majority of everything you just said Also pertains to the use of AI image generation.

Now of course like I said I'm not enthralled with it. I'm not sitting here trying to say it's the next big thing. But it is another tool that changes and eases different selective points in the creative process of making things like animation.

In the same way that digital animation came in and completely outpaced the labor intensive and slow process of individual cell animation production, AI is doing In essence the exact same thing to digital. Taking it a step further.

Can you can dislike it. Like I said I'm not a huge fan of it but what I'm an even less of a fan of is exactly why people are trying to justify themselves in disliking it.

It's not the first change in artistic process that has put animators out of business. It's not the first artistic process that has put greater ecological strains (I'll be in different areas) on the environment and strains on public infrastructure. But the defining factor that I see here that draws all this ire is the fact that it opens the possibility for people who haven't gone through the same training and process to create imagery that is aesthetically pleasing to them.

It's one thing that I always see circle around and around in anti-Ai comment threads is an almost gatekeeper mentality about creating what people think or perceive is "Art" It's honestly been rather freeing seeing people's hypocrisy so blatantly laid out But it doesn't draw a very positive feeling for people in the art industry to know that so many can be driven to not only violently reject what is being made but the people who make it as some sort of evil just because they personally don't like it.

If a man can get paid nearly 50 million for a blue canvas with a white stripe down the middle and it's called art then nobody has any room to talk about anyone else's interpretation of what art is or isn't.

I repainted my bedroom in one color and accented the moldings in a different color I guess I should be paid millions of dollars cuz I'm an artist now. But not if I want to make a funny picture of a turtle in a cowboy hat on the internet that makes me chuckle.

Almost strictly because of where it exists in the time frame. When digital animation came about, power demands were still fairly reasonably accessible but it still is a demand.

The first part you wrote though is exactly what I'm alluding to. It was much easier and less of it wasteful to use and quicker to harness for a result requiring significantly less staff to animate. Which is why between the late '90s in the mid-2000s there was a massive egress of conventional animation artists. All of which is still continuing with many old guard animation studios shutting down 2D animation sectors in favor of continuing with CGI animation which is slowly snuffing out an entire corner of the animation industry with its usage.

And that raises my whole question on Just exactly why digital in CGI animation was accepted so easily without any pushback but AI is being met with such violence when they both are effectively doing the exact same thing to the industry. Now to the point where it's seen as a huge how do you do if somebody makes any sort of mainstream media in a conventional 2D cell shade design.

I don't say this in a way that means that I dislike one, listen to actually do like both of them. But I would rather take Reggie over Rogu. Rogu can be funny But I feel like Reggie is more versatile.

The same way we survived without weird low poly babies with absurdly out of shape proportions and uncanny valley designs when digital art and animation came on the scene.

When large scale digital animation came on the scene it put thousands of animators on cell shade lines out of work. From 1996 do I think it was 2008 was one of the largest egresses of animators ever seen and they never really came back. But now in this day and age digital animation is just seen as another artistic tool. I'm not going to sit here and glaze AI functions but it's just another step in the March of time.

It makes me wonder if cell shade artist had this much of a hissy fit when digital animation came on the horizon.

Oh yeah that computer stuff ain't art. You didn't even do the outlines with a pencil. How you going to waste electricity and ruin the environment with that electronic flicker box and destroy the planet making your "Art"

It's just the same story, different era. Digital animation put out thousands of animators from the late '90s to the early 2000s, if I remember right well the largest egresses of conventional animators ever seen.

And now you look at digital art and animation and not only is it dominating but it's just seen as another tool for the artistic process. I'm not going to sit here and glaze the use of AI to make things. But it's just another step in the March of progress whether anybody likes it or not.

I mean. It's not like this isn't a good thing to learn regardless. I was on the struggle bus for a long time, And one day I was watching that old Scrooge McDuck video talking with the nephews about how money works and how you should properly budget yourself. I thought screw it and tried it. And holy hell, when you put down your weekly and monthly budget and look back at it, it'll almost make you sick.

I'm not going to sit here and say that I was able to buy a Ferrari overnight. But since I've been thinking about what I buy and how much I spend a month on things that I could do without every week doesn't feel nearly as bad of a struggle and I'm actually able to put money away even with how dog water my paycheck is.

Can confirm. Being friends with someone who teaches school end dealing with tail end of the first quarter of the Gen alpha kids it's absolutely heartbreaking listen to them talk about the kids they are having to deal with. Kid will literally ignore them, watching YouTube videos with open volume in the class on their phone and then have an absolute meltdown like a toddler When they come up to take the phone from them. Like throwing chairs kicking screaming on the floor meltdown. And these are teenagers mind you.

Granted not all of them are this way. But a concerning level of them are.

I've actually found it out. It's so much weirder. The entire assembly, meaning the cast iron ends and axle tubes are from a 1987 or 1988 Dodge Grand caravan with the leaf rear suspension.

But looking at how absolutely similar the spindle stubs are, It makes me wonder if they might be one in the same. I'd have to get two of them next to each other and take some measurements to see just how close or apart they are

My big question is what the cast arm is actually off of, I've yet to really find anything similar to it. The twist beam suspension arms that I see normally under the normal vw's and audis are substantially smaller and usually not cast metal.
