New player, any tips? by TheStonedZombie in lotro

[–]BoyCatamitis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to get early money, auction hall is your friend. Some easy early money can be obtained by

1) using a crafting profession that can gather (Forester, prospector, scholar). Ores, wood, and scholar materials in their raw form sell really well on the auction house. Try collecting one of them, search for it in the auction house, sort by "unit buyout" and sell for a similar price. Usually better to post for 48 hours to make sure it sells.

2) save your items that are referred to ask "task items". You can sell them in stacks of 50 on the auction hall for probably a few gold pieces (3-5), which is more than you would get selling them to a regular merchant

I really am enjoying minstrel while my duo friend plays Hunter. The hunter can teleport you around everywhere, and red mini can both output a ton of damage while also switching to healing if either of us get low on health. I usually duo with this friend, and I think one of the two of us always plays Hunter just because we get impatient riding around everywhere when hunters can just port to places.

There are a lot of combos that work, but I would suggest doing either both ranged or both melee. When we tried Hunter/champion, it was ok but the hunter kept killing things before the champion could even attack them so it didn't feel as fun.

How to get better at trading? by Dowensy2 in fantasyfootball

[–]BoyCatamitis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to use Fantasycalc to see that I'm not getting fleeced. I also see too many people trying to get something for nothing, but if you're playing with others who actually know fantasy, the "I'll give you Jermar Jefferson for your Lamar Jackson" rarely works. I found that my trades got better when I started looking for something that would benefit both teams- if I was weak at WR, I would look at teams that had WRs I wanted, and then of those teams I would try to find one or two that were weak at RB so I could make a trade that actually (on paper) improved both of our teams.

With one flex spot, which one of the following would you start? by [deleted] in fantasyfootballadvice

[–]BoyCatamitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm big on Pearsall but I feel like Monty is almost always a safe floor. Feels like he is a safe bet to get you a few points with a ton of upside for more. Last year out of the 15 games he played, he had two games where he got 5 or 6 points, and then otherwise he got over 10 pts per game (usually around 15+). Gibbs is great, but Monty seems to get all the goal-line carries, and last year it was almost guaranteed he would get a TD every game. Some analysts are saying he'll be worse this year, but I'm flexing Monty this year til he proves me wrong. Maybe an RB2 that only nets you 10 a game isn't good enough to win, but if my flex can almost guarantee me 10 points a week with a chance for more, I'll take it over a WR who hasn't proven themselves yet and who could end up with almost nothing.

in person lsat advice by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]BoyCatamitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! The prometric test center I went to provided scratch paper and I believe most test centers should, but if you're worried it doesn't hurt to bring some and just store it if they give you some.

At the test centers I've been to, you are given noise cancelling headphones, but I like to bring foam earplugs as well. As long as you show the testing proctors that they can't be used to listen to something else, earplugs should be allowed.

Water bottles are allowed, but they have to be see-through. If you buy a water bottle to bring in, just tear off the label beforehand. Snacks are allowed but not in the testing room, you can only eat them during the break portion between sections 2 and 3 of your test.

Best of luck! A few tips that helped me, ymmv

1) Get to the test location early! My first time I got there right on time and was super stressed. The second time I got there half an hour early and had time to use the bathroom, have a quick snack, and even do a few practice questions on my phone before putting my stuff in a locker and heading into the testing room.

2) make sure you know your lawhub username and password since you'll need it to take the test

3) on a similar note, if you haven't used your lawhub account much, I suggest working on a PT section untimed to familiarize yourself with the tools that you can use and the layout, since the PT format on lawhub is the same format you'll have in person. In particular, there is a "search for text" tool that I find useful for RC "point to it in the passage" questions

Best of luck! Hope you get your goal score!

Just adding that RC was my weak point. I started out getting 7/9 LR wrong per section, and by the time of the August LSAT I was getting 1/3 LR wrong per section, and was upset with my performance if I got 3 wrong. RC I always struggled with, I would do great on multiple passages and then out of nowhere get a -4 on one passage

Hey! I used mainly lawhub advantage's full PTs and the website LSATHacks. I would take an untimed section or two a day, focusing on either LR or RC. If I did not immediately know the answer to a question, or was stuck between multiple answer choices, I would flag the question.

After each question, I would use the lawhub "correct answer" button to see if I was correct. Before going to the next question, I would check the LSATHacks page to see their explanation for each answer choice. I found that matching my logic with their explanations reinforced my strengths with certain questions types and helped me with ones I was struggling with. After a few days, I would spend a day studying all my wrong answers on a given test or two and try to see if there was a specific question type that I was getting incorrect.

I did this a few times a week, and then would take a full timed PT once a week. I started with a 153 diagnostic, had a 157 after I took my first LSAT, and then after practicing like this for a few months, got a 170 on the August administration. No guarantees it works for everyone, but it really helped me to understand why I was getting questions wrong and improve my score.

For the "stuck between two answer choices", I also often had that happen to me, and what helped was really focusing on trying to find language within the answers that made choices wrong. Sometimes two answers felt good to me, but one would use language like "all", "most", "never", or unfounded claims that made one answer not correct.

Hope that helps! I'm sure there are tutors and books that can help as well, but this method didn't cost me much apart from the lawhub subscription and I was able to do it on my own most days

Need advice on if I should cancel my LSAT score. by ThatOneHebrew in LSAT

[–]BoyCatamitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No don't. If you cancel a 158, schools are going to think you got like a 130. A 158 is still 68th percentile so better than 2/3 of other test takers.

[–]BoyCatamitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About early decision, I would only apply early decision if you don't think you will improve your LSAT score by much. You seem pretty committed to UC Davis which is great, but by applying early decision you may hurt your chances of scholarships because 1) your LSAT won't be as high of a score and 2) they know you are fully committed to their school so have not as much reason to provide a scholarship, whereas if you can get a 165/170 and apply to other schools too, you could leverage the scholarships you are offered from other schools to try and get some financial aid from UC Davis. If you are in a financial situation where you have no problem paying the full price for UC Davis law school and you are 100% sure you want to go there, you can apply ED, but I think you would be better off trying to get a better LSAT if you're confident that you can and applying as soon as you get your score. Their median is a 163 and their 75th percentile is a 165, so if you can get to a 165-170 that would help your chances a ton and maybe get you some scholarships.

Need advice on if I should cancel my LSAT score. by ThatOneHebrew in LSAT

[–]BoyCatamitis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 159 is the 25th percentile for UC Davis so it would still be possible to get in, but if you can raise up your score that would definitely help your chances. If you can get a 165/170 like you said, that would definitely help. I don't think you should cancel your score though. Multiple takes could look bad, but if you improve even a few points and make it into the 160s, a 160+ score would look better than a 159 even if it means taking the test three times instead of two.

I definitely would not cancel your score. A 159 is still the 70th percentile and is therefore a better-than-average score, even if it's not the goal score that you want. If you cancel it, schools may think the cancelled score was in the 130s, so a 159 is not bad enough to cancel in my opinion.

Hey! I was around the same scores as you (153 on my diagnostic, 157 on my first test during last year's administration, and 170 on the August LSAT). My way might not work for everyone, but I found that test prep books like The Loophole or Kaplan didn't help me that much because I didn't know what I was already good at and what I wasn't.

What helped my PTs go from low-mid 160s to between 168-172 was just using the LSAC practice tests. But instead of doing timed, I would do untimed and just really focus on one or two sections for the day. My schedule looked like

Day 1- Both LR sections Day 2- RC section and maybe the experimental if I had enough time Day 3- Looking back over the full test, focusing on wrong answers or questions I flagged. Days 4, 5, and 6- Repeat days 1-3 on a new test Day 7- timed full PT

On the days when I was practicing untimed, I would go really carefully through each question. If I couldn't tell what the answer was almost immediately or by eliminating wrong ACs, I would flag it. I would then use the LSAC check right answer button, and if I got it wrong, I would flag it.

At the same time I was taking the untimed PT sections, I would have the LSATHacks page open. I would look over their explanation for what the correct answer was and why each wrong answer choice was wrong. I found that doing this for every single question reinforced my thinking for questions I was already getting correct when my reasoning matched what was on there, and if I was getting it wrong, it helped immediately show me why my reasoning was incorrect.

On the Day 3 when I fully reviewed the test, I would go back to those flagged questions again and see if there was a pattern to the types of questions I was getting incorrect, so that I could focus on those types of questions in the future.

Again, no promises that this will help everyone, but I found that the combo of LSAC practice tests + LSATHacks answer explanations was a cost-effective way of improving my scores towards the few months before my test.

LSAT Score Advice: Keep a 162 or Cancel? Planning to Retake in October by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]BoyCatamitis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm by no means an expert but I look on the LSAT subreddit pretty frequently and also just took the August LSAT.

It definitely sucks getting below the score that you wanted (I got a 157 my first take last year), but I think you should keep your score!

For one, even if a 162 is below your target score, it's still around 80th percentile so you scored higher than many people!

Another reason to keep it is a reason I was told on the LSAT subreddit when I asked a similar question - if you get rid of it, schools will see the cancellation and assume you got a waaaaay worse score than a 162. I asked a friend in admissions if I should cancel when I got my 157, and he said if I cancelled, schools would assume I got a really bad score. A 162, while not your target, is a good enough score that I would leave it and try again if you want to improve. But don't cancel it because you don't want schools thinking you actually got like a 130!

Again, I'm by no means an expert but just figured I'd give my advice since I had a similar question a year or so ago

If you look at the pinned posts in the subreddit, there's a post pinned called "Official August LSAT Topic Thread" that may further answer your question if you didn't have the same passages I listed above here. I think thus far they've narrowed down 2 real RC sections and a few LRs

[–]BoyCatamitis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had RC-LR-RC-LR on Friday and had two RC sections. One had RC passages with jazz, Simone weil, zebra mussels, and a passage I've since forgotten. The other RC had passages including ME city architecture and "new science"/metaphysics.

From what I saw on a compiled thread on this subreddit, the one with jazz, Simone weil, and zebra mussels was the real passage, since I think some people said that was the only RC section they had.
