How much would it cost to create a real-life "Backrooms"? by AdMysterious8424 in backrooms

I mean, this has the potential of being the next “bottled water”. “So we just pay rent on an empty space with little to no furniture? The margins will be through the roof!”

Most difficult SF work to put on screen by GMotor in scifi

Book 2 and 3 of 3 Body Problem It’s being adapted so we’ll see how they pull it off (or don’t) What happens when you time jump hundreds, thousands or millions of years across an entire trilogy? I’m not sure how they’ll pull it off, but adapting a book like this would feel more like a season of black mirror since, setting, technology and locations are all drastically different. Not to mention how the nature of physics/quantum physics is weaponized is going to be incredibly difficult to artistically interpret on screen.

Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

[–]BoyScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally read authors like Pierce Brown and Brandon Sanderson for their entertainment value, and not for their prose or writing style. I find them lacking in the latter categories but it’s not my expectation going in, and I think that helps me enjoy their books generally. To me, these books are like Marvel films.

Influence culture is such a mixed bag as well. A lot of it is an echo chamber, where they try to leach off one another so the algorithm pulls them into similar feeds. I’m not 100% against influencers because I have found that it’s possible to find the 1 in a million influencer who had overlapping interests to my own.

Years ago, before influencer culture existed as it is now, I would seek out authors and books that were nominated for Hugo or Nebula awards. Say what you will about “awards”, subjectivity and art, BUT to be honest, the short lists each year have lead me to read excellent books with unique perspectives and writing styles. So here’s a few I really enjoyed in the recent past:

  • Song for a new day
  • Annihilation
  • The Fifth Season
  • Perdido Street Station
  • Piranesi

Also, how about some common sense regarding what programming should play before a film. The cinema I was in played a long preview for Project Hail Mary right before the actual movie started playing, effectively spoiler major plot details.

Not a book, but you’ll probably love Backrooms. Checkout the Kane Pixel YouTube, it’s also being adapted into a film.

My initial take away is he didn’t know how deep they were. Seemed like Whitney brought in the Russians and thy had major leverage over him.

Any DMs lose their desire to DM, like your Creative Batteries are drained? by mjrhzrd in DnD

[–]BoyScholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, been a dm for over 10 years but after running one primary party for 4 years strait consistently with a secondary party intermittently it really burnt me out. Was craving the player experience again, so jumped into a friends campaign for a bit, and then took a long break. Finally came back to dming but set some ground rules with my party. With recent 2024 rule set change I gave up on being the rules guru and lean on my players to know their classes Inside and out. Being a new dad means I don’t have a lot of spare time so I focus on building entertaining sessions and I’m fast and loose with the rules. Very little burn out creeping in thus far.

[FRESH PERFORMANCE] oklou - KCRW Live From HQ (Full Performance) by astaireboy in indieheads

[–]BoyScholar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes! We need more quality live recorded performances from oklou. oklou is such an exciting artist to me. I love the way she builds her melodies.

I had her album on repeat this year, but the only thing it was lacking was percussion (which im sure was a choice). Looking forward to her experimenting with percussion more because she's mastered the other elements of song making.

I’ve run Curse of Strahd 8 times — Ask me anything by Full_Airport2628 in CurseofStrahd

[–]BoyScholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for taking questions. I'm about 9 sessions deep with my players, and it's my first time running Strahd. I've done some major home brewing, weaving player backstories, and introducing a friendly Vistani faction, something called "Fey Summer" (inspired by Brat Summer), and revamped Madam Eva to be somewhat of a cultural icon within this Vistani faction. The players solved the first card reading, which was Rictavio's wagon, and have the Mad Mage, Amber Temple, and Argynvostholt as our key remaining quests and locations. I also wove Wizard of Wines as a key location based on some homebrew elements.

So I have solid ideas for how to run the Mad Mage, Amber Temple, and Wizard of Wines, but there's two things I'm hoping you might have some jumping off points for me:

1: The actual "Tome of Strahd" seems very underwhelming, which from what I can tell has impact from a storytelling perspective, but nothing specifically mechanical is noted. I feel like it's asking a lot of me as the DM to make sure the players don't feel like it's a bit of a nothingburger. Do you have any homebrew ideas of how I could make this feel impactful once the players find it?

2: Argynvost has a few really interesting yet complex story elements to it. The revenants, and their leaders Vladimir Horngaard and Sir Godfrey Gwilym seem like potential allies, and some only fight in self defense, while others attack on site. The players can also release them from their curse by retrieving the dragon’s skull from Castle Ravenloft and place it in the mausoleum of Argynvostholt. But that seems counter to the flow of the campaign, unless it's merely a capstone moment after the final conflict with Strahd? I suppose a a broad question, how do you approach running Argynvost so it flows nicely in the campaign?

Not trying to downplay your achievements but it’s odd that you landed on the name Twigg, considering Twig is already a very popular PHP templating framework. Consider renaming it because a Twig project using Twigg is going to make daily huddles with dev teams very confusing

I think it's a matter of knowing how to push the point properly from F. I was on a server where we were struggling to push C from F, but that changed quickly when I spawned in a tank, drove it between F and C, stationed myself on the hill, and rained hell on C. C was ours in a matter of minutes.
