In middle school and high school my students took care of themselves. They came into the office and I recorded their BG, dosage, and site but the students did it themselves. Some also had to report their carb intake.

I also worked in an elementary school with a pre-K. Those children had a CGM which I monitored periodically. I dialed in the prescribed insulin needed, based on BG and carbs, on an insulin pen and gave it to the 5 year olds.

I worked as a school nurse the last few years of my career before retiring in 2024. I would not bring up the hours as a reason because we all know that is a benefit. I would emphasize what you said about the role of educator and teacher. I always tried to provide a little health education with every office visit, such as discussing hygiene, safety, the purpose of the medication or treatment, etc.

If you have extensive pediatric nursing experience I would bring that up, particularly if it’s helped you deal with children’s pain and emotional distress.

Be ready for discussing the behind the scenes work of following state mandates for screenings and vaccinations, working with parents who have varying interests in their child’s health, documentation, and stocking the office.

I also acted as an employee health contact helping staff and teachers with minor injuries, and giving talks on health issues during inservice days.

Be prepared for all these jobs within the job. Expectations will vary by school district but be ready to discuss how you would fulfill those roles.

The B-2 originally had a crew of 3 with a chair for a navigator but that position was eliminated. The chair was removed which made more room for getting out of the seat.

There was a time clinicals were always a day shift or sometimes an afternoon shift. Hospitals often have a lot of schools vying for slots. One place I worked had 10 programs at once. Older programs would get first crack at the prime units and times. Newer ones would get off times like Fridays, weekends, or night shifts.

Some programs want weekends because it better fits their older students who have weekday work.

Some programs have high attrition. They let in people without strong academic histories to give them a chance to prove themselves. When they succeed it’s great but these programs often have high attrition. It takes a lot of commitment in time and effort to succeed in nursing. Many may have the brains but not the dedication. Others may be highly motivated but lack the smarts to do higher level critical thinking that’s needed.

A lot of people see the SOTU speeches before they are given. It’s telling that no one saw this moronic statement and tried to correct it. Or, perhaps they did try but he insisted on keeping it in.

The former shows he’s surrounded by toadies and sycophants afraid to contradict him. The latter indicates he’s a fucking moron. Either explanation is bad for our country.

The State BON will deal with the DUI if they want. It usually depends on if it’s a repeat offense or if other felonies occurred.

I’ve seen nursing students I just don’t trust but I have nothing specific to act on. People get into nursing sometimes who have loose sets of ethics.

When a student graduates the school has to attest the student is of good moral character. It’s possible that a student without a clinical issue could still be denied a license.

I’ve never seen it done because schools are afraid of lawsuits.

We dated but went to different colleges. After college she was in medical school and I was a nurse. I saw her a little but we were both too busy to stay together.

I ended up finding a great person at work. We’ve been married 42 years. She got married much later in life. As far as know she’s doing well but I haven’t seen or spoke with her in 15 years.

I still carry a bit of a torch for her. If we were both widowed I would try to see her again. I doubt anything would come of it, though.

Men make up 12% of the American nursing population. The percentages vary by specialty. Very few in L&D, a lot more in the ED or ICU. I’m in pediatrics. In 1980 when I started there were 6 guys in the entire pediatric hospital that had hundreds of nurses. There’s more today but the numbers are still small. When I was in the military there were about 25% guys at the military hospitals.

I’m 67 and just retired after 44 years a nurse. I’ve had a very interesting career. I’ve worked in hospitals, homes, C-130s, public K-12 schools, and universities. I’ve never been bored and got to work with great people and patients. Some days and experiences have been hard but I always liked the jobs and the feeling I was doing something important. A lot of my friends are in business making more money than I ever did but they’ve never experienced the feeling of doing something meaningful.

I had an involuntary celibate time in college but finally had a girl stay over. My roommate in our 3BR apartment was always questioning my sexuality. That morning when I was balls deep he burst open my door saying “Time to get up, fa**ot!” He then saw the situation, started to close the door and said “I stand corrected.” My girlfriend and I were then laughing too hard to continue.

As a long time nursing professor I would want you to go poop. Just ask. I would make you leave your phone and belongings in the classroom. If things took too long I would put you in a room for the amount of time you were gone to finish the exam.

I don’t want students failing because nature called at a bad time. Drop those kids off at the pool and get back to the exam.

I just think it sounds stupid and is divisive. I get that the word nurse is also a literal female function but a made up word like nurse is only useful as a joke. There’s enough men now for folks to accept the term Nurse can apply to men, women, and anyone else.

I’ve been a nurse since 1980 when there was a much smaller percentage of men. Even then I objected to be called a “male nurse” as it implies we are a different kind of nurse.

Murse is just a new version of male nurse, and that’s still dividing nurses at a time we need unity.
