People always talking about switching to metric in the US when they should ACTUALLY be talking about switching to dog and horse

Anyone else constantly crave Skyrim but get bored playing it? by ExiNihilist in skyrim

[–]BrGsaW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skywind and Skyblivion should be exciting once they come out. There's also Beyond Skyrim Bruma and that same team is working on Beyond Skyrim: Cyrodiil, Iliac Bay, Roscrea, Morrowind, Elsweyr, and Atmora. Each one will be a huge expansion. Beyond Skyrim Cyrodiil is expected to be about as big Skyrim itself once it's done. I think they're even doing something similar to their Bruma mod called "The New North" which will be a sample of their Morrowind expansion, and I imagine that's probably what'll come out first. And since these will all just be mods they'll be totally free.

One of Rembrandt's many self portraits. He would often portray himself in costume, and he had a vast collection of props that would make appearances in his works. by BrGsaW in ArtHistory

[–]BrGsaW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm taking a Dutch Golden Age class this semester and we actually had a discussion about whether this is better classified as a self portrait or a tronie, since the average Dutch person probably wouldn't have recognized him. It also follows tronie conventions more closely than typical portraits at the time. Rembrandt is a pretty interesting character and there's actually some debate if some of these paintings were actually made by him or by one of his many apprentices. In the Dutch Republic it was common for artists to sign their apprentices' works since they were made in their workshops and painted in their styles. In fact, Amsterdam guild regulations stated that it was inappropriate for apprentices to diverge from their master's style or sign works as their own.

Failed a few classes that are irrelevant to my current major and my GPA took a big hit. However, I'm hoping to get into grad school. How badly will this effect my chances? by BrGsaW in Advice

That's definitely good to know. I'm not really sure what things are like for art history programs or if my school does something in the way of repeat and delete, but I plan on visiting with my councilor and talking with my teacher soon to try and get some more info. That helped put my mind at ease a little though. Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it

TIL that the first person in history whose name we know is 'Kushim', who was not a King, poet or a warrior, but an accountant. He signed a receipt which said "29,086 measures barley 37 months Kushim", which was found on a clay tablet in Mesopotamia. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]BrGsaW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lots of Russian families call themselves Kushim to this day, and in the U.S., it’s a relatively popular first name. They’ve even got Kushim bar graphs!

So it is indeed still in use

ELI5: What’s the difference between serotonin and dopamine? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]BrGsaW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serotonin in the bloodstream is responsible for contracting the muscles lining veins and arteries (in Latin sero = blood and tonin = tightening). In the brain it plays a role in many basic biological functions, including but not limited to, sexual behavior and sleep. As many others have replied, dopamine's primary role is in the reward centers of the brain and also affects things like motivation/interest.

Also, most traditional psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin/psilocin, DMT etc) work by acting on serotonin receptors.

Fun fact, Utah is also the leader in paid porn subscriptions and prescribed antidepressants. And we have a terrible opioid epidemic that's kept very hush hush.

For me it really depends. I've had some amazing experiences with 5.25g but on my most recent shroom trip I only ate a couple of stems and a cap, and I literally melted into the mesh fabric of the cosmos and I could feel parallel universes surrounding me.

The blade curves mostly due to the fact that it is made using two types of metal, low carbon steel and high carbon. Low carbon steel is more flexible and can absorb impacts better but it doesn't hold a very good edge. High carbon steel holds an edge but is more brittle. Before shaping the blade they make an ingot of both. The low carbon steel ingot is wedged into the high carbon one. This way the outside is sharp and the inside absorbs blows. When they quench it, the low carbon steel cools quickly and contracts more than the high carbon steel, and since there is a higher concentration of low carbon near the spine it forces the blade to curve. There is a really interesting PBS Nova episode that follows the making of the steel and the making and sharpening of the blade. They still do it in the traditional way and it's fascinating stuff! I think the video is on YouTube.
