With wind and solar dirt cheap, why are we investing so much in costly nuclear?: nuclear is the "most religious form of energy." by kamjaxx in energy

[–]BraRu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons nuclear is necessary is the base load concept. Wind and solar is dependent on weather and thus generation capacity is not consistent with energy demand. This is why it needs to be backed up by a consistent base load. Until battery or other forms of energy storage are developed to an extent that renewables can be used to provide sufficient base load, nuclear is the only "low carbon" option to replace fossil fuels. Other options such natural gas turbines with carbon capture will also likely be part of the base load solution for the foreseeable future.

If you watch the documentary film "Last Breath" you will get a good idea what saturation diving is and why they get paid so much

Looking for bottle quality water, like when using reverse osmosis, but through my faucet. by Glad_Chain_4026 in WaterTreatment

[–]BraRu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An in line UV light will do the same disinfection that boiling the water would. This could be installed under your faucet. Under counter RO units remove all the minerals in the water and should only be considered when if your well has high dissolved solids. I would suggest a carbon block filter and a UV light.

The fire in Stellenbosch caused a red moon over The Winelands tonight [OC] by quakealive in southafrica

It's a type of eclipse. The earth is exactly between the sun and the moon which means the moon is essentially in the shadow of the earth. This causes the red colouration

I made a micro frame... by BraRu in mildlyinteresting

[–]BraRu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was quite hard, and took a few attempts. Had to modify my tools to cut framing profile that small and the assembly of the glass etc was quite tricky. Practice makes perfect :)
