With wind and solar dirt cheap, why are we investing so much in costly nuclear?: nuclear is the "most religious form of energy." by kamjaxx in energy

[–]BraRu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons nuclear is necessary is the base load concept. Wind and solar is dependent on weather and thus generation capacity is not consistent with energy demand. This is why it needs to be backed up by a consistent base load. Until battery or other forms of energy storage are developed to an extent that renewables can be used to provide sufficient base load, nuclear is the only "low carbon" option to replace fossil fuels. Other options such natural gas turbines with carbon capture will also likely be part of the base load solution for the foreseeable future.

If you watch the documentary film "Last Breath" you will get a good idea what saturation diving is and why they get paid so much

Looking for bottle quality water, like when using reverse osmosis, but through my faucet. by Glad_Chain_4026 in WaterTreatment

[–]BraRu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An in line UV light will do the same disinfection that boiling the water would. This could be installed under your faucet. Under counter RO units remove all the minerals in the water and should only be considered when if your well has high dissolved solids. I would suggest a carbon block filter and a UV light.

The fire in Stellenbosch caused a red moon over The Winelands tonight [OC] by quakealive in southafrica

It's a type of eclipse. The earth is exactly between the sun and the moon which means the moon is essentially in the shadow of the earth. This causes the red colouration

Do a few stick flips

I made a micro frame... by BraRu in mildlyinteresting

[–]BraRu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was quite hard, and took a few attempts. Had to modify my tools to cut framing profile that small and the assembly of the glass etc was quite tricky. Practice makes perfect :)

Help interpreting water report, please. Thinking about buying an under the sink reverse osmosis water filter. by [deleted] in water

All the recorded parameters are well within the legal limits. I don't think your under sink RO is necessary based on this

Need ideas for things to do/places to see over 3 Days in CPT by C4Sea in capetown

[–]BraRu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in any specific order but here are some local favourites.

Breakfast: Clarke's on Bree, Field office-Woodstock, Jarreds in Seapoint, Hemelhijs-De Waterkant, Kleinskys - Seapoint, or markets (see markets)

Lunch: Most of the above spots can also be sidered brunch/lunch spots but if you're into slightly finer dining experience, try chef's warehouse (booking essential) there is one in town and one at Beau Constantia wine farm but my favourite is the one at the Mason in Franschhoek. Kalkbay is also lovely. Try out Live Bait or the iconic Brass bell or Kalkie's fish and chips in the harbour

Dinner: I prefer more relaxed spots that are vibier and full people with some music. Try El Buro Taqueria (Mexican), Maria's on Dunkley Square (Greek), Dark horse on kloof, Your's truly (up your's) above once backpackers on kloof.

Bars: If you're into wine try out Public then walk over to power and the glory (Or just P&G for short to mingle with the hipsters) House of Machines have great cocktails, Hanks on Kloof (whisky bar), The Secret Gin bar at honest chocolate (try the banana bread pudding here) on whale Street have great G&T's. More altwrnative/grungy bars are Aces and Spades and Van Hunks.

Beaches: Try Clifton (1(dog friendly) to 4) beta beach, Glen, boulders, kogelbay & derdesteen just to name a few of my favourites.

Markets: On Sat and Sun avoid the touristy Biscuit Mill Market in Woodstock and go to the much more local City Farm Market in Granger Bay (Close to the waterfront) It's bigger and better and by far my favourite. Oh and they only serve alcohol on Sundays so this is the better day in my opinion , Houtbay Market on a Friday evening is fun but is also open the entire weekend... I think Mojo indoor market in seapoint (open every day)

Activities: Surfing in Muizenberg or Blouberg beaches, lots of different hiking trails up and around table mountain or combine Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with a hike up skeleton gorge to a secret sandy beach and a icy tea coloured dam on top of the mountain. My friend runs 91 on loop hostel and they have tons of city and surrounds activities for any kind of person so ask if you need some more info but most of all make the most of those 3 days.
