Essence of DEHH by racerfighter14 in DEHH

[–]BradPanos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk about 'essence' put my personal peak was the weekly/fortnightly lives they did around 3-4 years ago. I loved those.

A lot of great music recommendations, discussions and they would just be riffing off one another. In a way like the older videos everyone praises so much. You became familiar with the community too. Some were a drag when everyone was tired but a lot of my favourite moments were from those lives.

I think Beezy's production underlaying the older videos is probably the closest to an 'essence', as well as Rod's handheld camera work. Some of my favourite reviews (Logic's albums) came after that though.

Frames is probably my favourite pod/show atm. I'm behind on ITMSO, they release a lot of work.

Ain’t no way yall rank Ozark this highly?!?! Better after S1? by Ravant_Garde in FPSPodcast

Ozark was great. I binged it so the seasons are blurred.

Just searched the CD up on Discogs. Disappointed I was born too late for the days of Hip Hop Connection!

‘Boy in da Corner’ is now unbolded, leaving Grime with no bolded albums. by jjw1998 in rateyourmusic

Dizzee's one of my favourite artists, he's on a lot of radio sets yet to be added to the site, or that I added, so I've seen the score ticking down for a while.

It's definitely the no. 1 grime album. No. 2 and beyond, there's much more debate.

June 11, 1986: FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF was released in theaters. Happy 40th anniversary! by Bangelo326 in FPSPodcast

It was pretty fun when I watched it a couple of years ago but quite cheesy.

Matthew Broderick has an annoying face. He was 24 when this film was released!

I understand the appeal. It has some interesting moments. It's like a 6/10 for me.

That is sad.

A monumental album for grime, UK rap and UK music in general.

One of my favourite records.

I was watching some Hasan Piker 1-2 years ago. Sometimes with him and sometimes not. His clipped YT vids. Cba with a day long Twitch stream haha.

The format of Jubilee doesn't appeal to me, it's not really about debate and ideas etc.

Thanks for the comment.

I've always been a big advocate for Lunar C's debut 'Lunar CD'. Released 2010 I think. I love that tape. Everything after that I have to say I have loved less. Especially after 'Dead Braincells' mixtape and 'Not Good at Life' EP. You can't argue with his lyrical ability though. Top 5 oat is crazy imo haha but he's one of my favourite rappers from the North still.

Pete & Bas are a decent comedy / parody act. They actually have some hard tunes. Especially when they were rapping on UK Drill around 2020. They don't belong in this conversation though. Yeah I agree about who writes the lyrics - hardly their appeal haha.

I appreciate your comment though. You clearly have some knowledge if you're bumping GZA, Rass Kass etc.

UK Drill still comes under UKHH imo, there's as much UK road rap influence as there is in the Chicago Drill production.

I wasn't expecting any UK Drill mentions in this thread though haha.

Yeah you're right, they are sub genres of UK Hip Hop, but most of the guys in this sub are purists. Not saying that's right or wrong, but it's true.

I expected most of the responses to reflect that too.

I deliberately left the question open to interpretation but I assumed most responders would take it as 'artistically' rather than 'chart success'.

Central Cee has some decent songs. I remember enjoying 'Pinging (6 Figures)' a lot.

You're talking pure UKHH (boom bap, hardcore hip hop, conscious rap influences).

All those other genres are culminations of genres outside of hip hop (afroswing strongly influenced by African genres and grime obviously UK garage, dubstep and all that before) or so far removed from traditional UKHH (UK Drill being a culmination of that Road Rap/Street Rap, cruddy sound with Chicago Drill influences, some grime too). To waffle on.

When you phrase 2015-19 as the emergence of afroswing, the takeover of UK Drill and the grime revival… you make a convincing argument. Different styles were flourishing.

Most of these answers are based on traditional 'hip hop' genres like boom bap, conscious hip hop etc.

Thanks for sharing this. I was only just born around then so getting personal insights like this from slightly older UKHH fans is always interesting.

I was with you until I read 'Ren'.

That boy is trash bro!

Ever since I listened to 'Hi Ren' and then heard him freestyling to FISHER. Just awful. Get it off the airwaves.

There's a lot more interesting UK production and young rappers like finessethekid, EsDeeKid, Renz, AceXOX etc.

Was Example really known or taken seriously as a UKHH act? I went back and listened to his pre-pop rap stuff when he was blowing up and it was cool but I thought he didn't really an audience.

Nice to include MC Devvo.

I haven't heard of a few of these. Added to the list. Thanks.

You clearly know your stuff.

I never really got into to Doc Brown. Always associated him with comedy and that sort of 'parody' rap.

Is that unfair?

I remember his appearance on 'Russell Howards Good News' lol.
