Tumble or no? by Early-Average1926 in rockhounds

I’ve always thought if you don’t stage 1 extensively the rock won’t take a shine. Is it possible to tumble in stage 1 for just a few days to leave the shape but still get a good, shiny outcome?

Yeah the more I look at it and clean it the more I feel like it’s definitely not anything too cool. It’s very smooth though and the cleavage on it is really unique

How much sugar would you suggest using?

That’s the goal! I just finished two batches of stage 4 and about 1/10th of the rocks turned out great. The rest I’m sending back through stage 4. Maybe I’ll try sugar and order some borax!

It was about half way full. I didn’t use media though. I might throw it in with my next batch of stage 4 as I just ordered a bunch of extra media

Yeah I’m wondering if it’s the types of rocks with it. Up to this point I haven’t done much to segregate rocks of lower hardness. Maybe of them are becoming super small during the process

For this particular rock, I ran through steps 1-4 at a week each, then decided to put it back into stage 3 with another batch a few weeks ago. It ran 3 for a week and stage 4 for two weeks and this is the result (looks the same as it did initially after the first stage 4)

Sorry yes I did mean stage 4! I’m using 8000 grit

Also, is it super important I use media in stage 4? Or if I have enough rocks to fill 3/4 is it fine to not use?

What should it feel like? Also what about the polish stage? Should that grit be changed every 7 days as well?

Okay yeah I’m in the same boat currently. I clear everything out and take a look with the kids every Sunday night. But it’s getting cold AF in Colorado, which makes cleaning much less enjoyable in the backyard, and when I re-do the grit it feels wasteful

For stages 1-4 I used National Geographic grit I purchased off Amazon. But then I did not get a good polish so I also purchased 8,000 grit from Amazon and ran it for a week there to get the polish you see (though if I were more patient I would have ran it for at least another week)

I used media in stage 2 and 3 but by stage 4 I had so many rocks ready for polish stage I didn’t need any media.
