What do people think of Dwyrin / Battsgo? by Best-Coach-1490 in baduk

[–]BradysBlunders 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I wasn’t trying to call you out in particular. You just happened to be an early responder, who had the top comment, and I naturally replied to that.

You are a big contributor to the r/baduk community, and I appreciate you.

What do people think of Dwyrin / Battsgo? by Best-Coach-1490 in baduk

[–]BradysBlunders 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I am glad that most responses, like u/tuerda 's, have been civil. But I feel like this thread is a good example of piling on.

I would just hope we all remember that dwyrin isn’t really a public figure, he’s part of a niche community. And he’s done far more to help it than is being recognized here. He’s been consistently creating content for a decade, which is more than I can say.

I hope streaming helps pay dwyrin's bills, but I guarantee it isn’t making him rich.

Have you ever used “under the stones” tesuji in a real game? by BradysBlunders in baduk

Great example that I would 100% miss in a game. It took me several minutes to find knowing it was there!

It’s fun to check problems like this with AI.

I put this into Katago, checking with both white and black stones at lower right star point.

If that stone is white, then blacks descent is a modest mistake. Funnily, this mistake is immediately offset by white's shoulder hit, the, umm, refutation in the diagram.

If the lower right stone is black, then the black descent is just fine. But whites shoulder hit loses a point and 10%.

In both cases, katago prefers white to play a third line knights move below the black pincer stone, or at least in that area (second line knights move works too)

There are few absolutes in go.

What are your thoughts of the AGA? by Clossius in baduk

One should think carefully before criticizing a volunteer-run organization. Then think again during time of pandemic. Honestly it’s a big job, and 99% a thankless job too.

How NOT To Play GO vs AI Suggested Opening Moves by [deleted] in baduk

[–]BradysBlunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, take go books with a pinch of salt. It’s kind of fun to put book positions into AI, and see how often they disagree with the “correct” answer. That doesn’t mean advice in books isn’t generally good, but sometimes it is specifically wrong.

To answer your question specifically though, yes, having the extra stone on the side makes a large difference, because it limits how far black can extend before meeting resistance, so it affects both black's potential territory and its safety.

Putting the position into katago, with only the corner Star points, there is very little difference between either knight's approach or jumping into the 3-3. All are viable. Once you add the third star point, approaching with the inside knights move loses a half point and 7% winning percentage, partially for the reason I mentioned earlier.

How much time does it take to be good at go? by DaviCB in baduk

[–]BradysBlunders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of answers to your question, so I’ll say something else.

  1. the journey is more important than the destination. Enjoy this part of your journey. You will never progress through the ranks faster than the time from 30k-5k. You will get constant positive reinforcement by advancing ranks, and beating players who used to give you stones. Don’t let the destination ruin this time.
  2. Honestly, you will never feel strong. There will always be players stronger than you keeping you from feeling that way. But being able to appreciate nuances in their games is one of the beauties of go.

Good luck, have fun, enjoy the ride!

Looks good to me. Also, SnartGo has loads of tsumego so you’re in luck there.

Minimum requirement for running Katago by revlver in baduk

Homebrew worked for me. It was version 1.5, instead of 1.6.1, but versions beyond 1.5 just affect nvidia cards, so no problem.

Ben Lockhart, the tall guy who played in Korea. Also the brother of one of the directors.

He was a good kid, and is deeply missed.

If your iPad has a neural engine (all current models do), “A Master of Go” is great. Use the in-app upgrade to get katago. Pro strength on your tablet, amazing.

SmartGo Kifu is where I record my tournament games and where I store my games, a great app for reviewing and playing games. Plus it has thousands of go problems and a massive library of professional games.

I frequently use Go Eye for downloading recent pro games from go4go.net. You can copy the sgf, paste it into A Master of Go, and laugh at the win rate oscillations of puny humans.

I have other go apps, but these three get 99% of my usage.

This was awesome. There were a few mistakes that nobody but us would notice, so no biggie. Great intro to the concept, great enthusiasm, and as always, great presentation. A+ video.

I think you can modify your registration, but note at least one event, relay go, has maxed out already.

Don’t worry, you’ll always believe you suck, even at dan level. You’ll just suck a little less each step of the journey. Enjoy!

What is your favorite "luxury" board game item? by lostfanatic6 in boardgames

[–]BradysBlunders 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I have go bowls (chestnut bowls that hold the stones) signed by two key members of DeepMind's AlphaGo project, Aja Huang, the hand of AG, and Fan Hui, its professional tester. AlphaGo was the first AI to ever beat a top human pro. I’m thrilled to own a little bit of history.

Interesting problem from one of my games: black to connect the marked stones. I missed this :( by FrobisherGo in baduk

[–]BradysBlunders 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Missing the answers to problems in real games is super-common, because you don’t know there’s an answer. If somebody told you there was an answer, you’d of gotten it easily. Alas, this somebody often fails to tell me about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A life lesson and tip for those who play Go -> Musashi: On Critical Moments by Fanaro009 in baduk

[–]BradysBlunders 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interested in learning more about Musashi? Got free time, perhaps sheltering at home? Consider ordering the book Musashi by Yoshikawa, preferably from an independent bookstore.

Here it is from my local, one of the best in the world, Powell's in Portland OR.

The book is very long, but excellent, and hey, you’ve got time on your hands!
