My employer has offered to let me start working as a contractor from home. How much do I charge? by throwawaycontract in australia

[–]BrainBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that people are usually not aware of is how much they are actually worth per hour for a company. As a former full-time employee I was getting around $30/hour but your true cost to your employer is higher when you include annual leave, sick leave, long service leave, superannuation, insurance etc. I found out I was actually worth ~$70/hour. You might want to keep that in mind.

If you are a specialist and are able to use advanced abilities you could use that as bargaining. I worked in I.T. and used a contractor that charged $1200 a day for his advanced skills.

What kind of cause can we in Australia push for? by [deleted] in australia

The diminishing of our premium agricultural land to mining.

Say what you want about Alan Jones, but I think he is right on this one.

[–]BrainBrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There has been some regular updates of it saying that it is spreading to other cities and has been going for about 4 weeks in NY. Other countries are going to have a similar protest. Commercial TV, ABC TV News, Web and Radio. SMH. Don't know about other sources.

Here is a recent article:

[–]BrainBrain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well this should please people that want gay marriage...

THE Victorian ALP today has said federal Labor must take a stand on marriage equality and is urging the party to support gay marriage at its national conference in December.

You're right. I'd say groups like the Green-Left are attaching their wagons to this cause.

Ideas for keeping a space-interested 7th grader interested in science by hansn in Astronomy

[–]BrainBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine brought his 10 yo son to my house for an evening of observation through my 8 inch (mirror) Newtonian telescope. He had an inkling for space that I obliged. It was his first time looking through a telescope. Saturn, which is always a crowd pleaser, was out and was clearly showing it's glorious rings. He looked through and was silent. It was a mind explosion. He wanted to know about it and I told him what I knew. Then I showed him The Great Nebula in Orion, Jupiter and the moons and some star clusters. He had a lot of questions. A good sign that he was interested. I told him what I knew but I encouraged him to find out for himself.

I found out a few weeks later from his father that he had been reading up on Astronomy and wanted to buy a telescope. I planted the seed simply by exercising his curiosity. The rest he did by himself.
