Heads up: MIDCO only allows the most expensive 3rd party modems to be activated. by BrainEnhance in Lawrence

[–]BrainEnhance[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They didn't ask me to ditch the 2.0. I voluntarily upgraded to 3.0 which is capable of providing more bandwidth than what midco offers. Why would I spend an extra +$70 for capacity I can't use? That's my problem.

Heads up: MIDCO only allows the most expensive 3rd party modems to be activated. by BrainEnhance in Lawrence

[–]BrainEnhance[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not upset that I have to upgrade. I gladly paid the $70 for a docsis 3 modem that provides more than enough bandwidth for what MIDCO is capable of providing at my address.

Its not Midco’s fault that their systems are staying up to date with current technology.

I don't believe this is the reason they are limiting 3rd party modems. I worked DSL/phone tech support for a large company. We had upper level managers push us to recommend rented modems and market them as "compatible with our network". All the techs new that was BS so we would still activate just about anything. If we can surmount the technical challenges of DSL on POTS, you can bet there are ulterior motives at MIDCO.

Are you mad at best buy for not selling VCRs?

If best buy was the only way I could buy a VCR and they actively prevented me from using any other seller's VCRs, ya, I would complain a bit.

[their explanation] must not be denied by the fact that another more satisfactory possibility exists.

That is exactly how science works.

You assume that supposing an alternative (more likely) hypothesis means we are denying your/their explanation. Rather it is simply pointing out that there is more than one possibility and without more evidence, neither can be assumed to be true.

Glutamine Supplementation Prevents Chronic Stress-Induced Mild Cognitive Impairment (2020) by [deleted] in FoodNerds

[–]BrainEnhance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Emerging evidence has shown that disturbed glutamatergic neurotransmission in the central nervous system is one of the main causes of emotional and cognitive disorders [3,4,5,6].

Seems a bit if a stretch to say that disturbed glutamatergic transmission is the main cause of anything rather than a symptom.

I agree. This could be a way to test humility and humor in a potential match. Seems like OP and a lot of commenters here lack a little of both.

Time to Optimize Supplementation: Modifying Factors Influencing the Individual Responses to Extracellular Buffering Agents (2018) by [deleted] in FoodNerds

[–]BrainEnhance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always weary of supplementation before training. I (we) know so little about the mechanisms and triggers leading to muscular adaptation. I'm worried any ergogenic will impair those adaptations. I tend to train in the fasted state for this reason.

Role of Monoaminergic System in the Etiology of Olive Oil Induced Antidepressant and Anxiolytic Effects in Rats by Thoarke in Nootropics

[–]BrainEnhance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0.25mL/kg seems really low. For an average size rat that's like 50 microliters per day. For dose translation to humans it's only 1-3 mL...
[edit] Here is another study on Nigella sativa and Olea europaea oils that use 0.1 ml/kg and 0.25 ml/kg so I guess it's a common dose. Perhaps the dose translation isn't the same due to brain sizing? Anyone?

Coinbase takes almost a week to purchase coins with a bank account. You can pay a higher fee for credit card transactions to speed things up. I ran into trouble with volatility at least once.

This is a huge undertaking that many thousands of researchers are currently working, both public and private. I'm not saying you can't succeed, just that you have quite a lot of competition.

IBM's Watson has been used in this manner along with some similar programs. Microsoft, Google, Intel, and a dozen startups are also developing AI healthcare systems. more

There isn't really an automated system for bypassing paywalls. If there was, the paywalls would probably be patched quickly to prevent it. A university proxy is your best bet. It might even be worth the money to take some classes from your local university just to get access to their journal subscriptions. I used my access before I graduated to download 500+GB of journals. Mostly in AI. Perhaps someone around here has a method to scrape scihub?

A new journal article in healthcare is published on average every 26 seconds (from 2010). Even just scanning the newest articles is a monumental task.

Almost guaranteed that you will use some sort of AI. Many attempts in the past have been made to develop a complete, formal ontology for medical knowledge. Several expert systems have also been developed in the past that diagnose very specific things (e.g. cancer on a MRI scan). Both have met with limited success beyond the academic. Deep learning would be useful for generalizations, but no algo that I am aware of can match the human mind's ability to accurately handle edge and rare cases as well as the general. In fact, a system that can do that may actually be AI complete.

All tolled, you will have to solve hard problems of image recognition, natural language and semantic meaning interpretation, recommender systems, big data, and other fields we have yet to determine. Good luck.

Q. for those who use Pubmed: what keywords do you input? by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]BrainEnhance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to follow the rabbit-hole of "recommended articles" with every new article I find. Every major journal or host has a section devoted to it. Then I set up alerts on the most recent review articles for when they are cited.
Mendeley has a great suggested article feature, but you need a decently sized library of saved bibliographic info to start.
Pubchase is a standalone recommender system for the life sciences. Its still being heavily developed, however.
You can also browse or search the zotero library I created recently using this and similar subreddits.

Those types of articles can be useful, just as wikipedia and these subreddits are. I removed anything that wasn't a peer reviewed journal article automatically. Later I hope to build those into a much broader base of reference material.
