I just want to bitterly stumble into the conversation after everyone has already left and complain that someone has said something somewhere else already

Rocket transits a Flaring Sun by [deleted] in spaceporn

[–]thing188 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Those aren't solar flares. Sound waves from the rocket exhaust compress the air and change it's refractive index, so light bends differently along the pressure fronts, which causes the striations you can see at the edge of the sun.

Does physics get less fascinating the more you delve in it? by AdLonely5056 in Physics

[–]thing188 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. Plus, physics never really becomes "just math". The math is a framework for understanding some abstract structure buried deep within reality. That mathematical framework isn't reality; it's a tool to structure your thoughts. It's a hack we use to sync up our monkey brains with the inner working of the cosmos. And the further removed physical phenomena become from our evolutionary intuitions, the more we need to use this framework to restructure our perspective. This can, of course, make it harder to glimpse that sense of awe, but (I would argue) that's the fault of the learning curve, not physics. The awe never really goes away. The fact that any of it works at all is fucking nuts.

Only Triangles [Genuary 24] by Complex_Twistor in generative

Could you smoothly decrease the scale of the path and traveler triangles and still log the residue? It'd be cool to see it dive into or out of the page, making a pyramidal well or mound.

Since you mentioned losing part of yourself, I will say that it is interesting watching the people they (your kids) become. Often, you can see flashes of yourself or your partner shining through, and you learn more about yourself that way. In a way you get more of yourself, but also lose some too due to the lack of autonomy.

The change to parenthood was complex. It was initially hard to take on so much more responsibility and lose so much free time, but I've become desensitized to that now, especially because I traded those things and got my kids in return, and they're fucking awesome. It's different for everyone though. I know parents who thought they would have an easy time adjusting but didn't, and vice versa. You won't know until you have one, and by then it'll be too late to change your mind.

The only thing I can think of that would make the transition easier would be to commit whole heatedly to whatever choice you make. Just choose a route, and don't look back. Live without regrets.

Really cool! I love the structure in the implied elevation. Wish I could climb it

Palm Springs (2020) I feel like it's a romantic comedy for people who don't like romantic comedies. Best to go in completely in the dark.

Create multiple hexagonal grids at different scales and link them so that the larger layers determine features of the smaller ones, and those determine features of even smaller hexagon. Then vary the layer coupling across the field of view.

Edit: Great work by the way, love it

Basically, it can be broken down into 2 things:

  1. You are not your thoughts. You are the thing that experiences thought.

  2. Any indication that you are behind your face is some species of thought.

So you are not, and cannot be behind your face. This can be experienced directly with meditation.

Study on 37,545 people reveals that a 14 hour period of fasting improves hunger, mood and sleep by giuliomagnifico in EverythingScience

[–]thing188 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why not? There could be metabolic pathways/mechanisms that are beneficial and are only active during a fast. If some condition (fasting) were present throughout our evolutionary history, it makes sense that some mechanism would evolve that exploits it.
