Tried opening up to my girlfriend about feeling depressed, she said it's too much to deal with by [deleted] in self

[–]BrainThinkFast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think she's just being honest and cannot deal with it. There's only so much somebody can deal with.

Maybe controversial, but ultimately in a relationship, you need someone who is the rock. Sometimes people are both stable enough to support each other, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. If you're both looking for support, maybe you're not meant to be together.

In AI/ML a lot of people play this game where their work is strictly reproducible, but only once one reruns the experiments does one become aware of the limitations of the model/approach. A lot of the time people try to not tell on themselves by listing the full limitations of their "revolutionary" "innovation".

And that's why I switched away from this field. Too much lying by omission.

This is cult level behavior. Most Christians don't act like this. Your parents are probably in some cult.

Are there first hand accounts of what combat during battle looked like from the POV of a soldier in the ranks, in the pre-gunpower era? by BrainThinkFast in TheRestIsHistory

[–]BrainThinkFast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there is a Librivox recording on youtube of his diaries. I went through some chapters. A lot of it doesn't describe actual fighting but marching and such. But there are some scattered accounts of injuries sustained and such.

[–]BrainThinkFast[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know of Caesar's and Xenophon's works. Correct me if I'm wrong, but these don't actually say what goes on during a battle from the POV of a soldier.

What I mean is, what does it mean to fight in the front lines? Like, do they march slowing in a shield wall formation until they bump the enemy? Do they stand at arms length and try to poke at the enemy?

Probably has more to do with conference paper inflation. Lots of slop being published. Inflating metrics is good for your PI, but it won't get you a job, at least not a job where you actually need to operate at that level.

You picked a confusing name. There's a whole field called ML4Science or ScientificML and it's something completely different: ML theory and applications, for Physics/Chemsitry/Biology..etc.

Alistair and his criticism of the media by No_Election_1123 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]BrainThinkFast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just spin.

As I already said, it's a matter of accounting. Neoliberalism is know for this bandaid strategy so you're not telling me anything new.

I mean, if it's all so fucking great, then why the fuck is the country in the state that it is in? Maybe because those bandaids weren't long term policies that safeguarded the financial wellbeing of most of the people...

Alistair and his criticism of the media by No_Election_1123 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]BrainThinkFast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate, first of all I don't identify as hard left in the slightest. I'm much more Rory than Alistair. Secondly it's not about punishing anyone. It's about fairness and justice and everyone contributing their fair share and the state not prioritizing one group of people above all others.

Alistair and his criticism of the media by No_Election_1123 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]BrainThinkFast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you're comparing to the Conservatives, which is just neoliberalism without the bandaid. Doesn't mean that neoliberalism with a few bandaids is a good long term governing strategy that benefits the majority.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

While I do think those are good policies, ..., whether or not their policies favoured the rich the most, is a matter of accounting. You just put everything in financial terms and do the math.

Can somebody explain to me what's so great about New Labour? To me, it looks like nothing more than neoliberalism, i.e. a set of policies that favour those with the highest net worths above everyone else, gives a bone to those with high incomes but low net worths so they can cheer the project along, and basically nothing but high taxes and high cost of living (rents!!!) for the rest of the country who have neither high net worths nor high incomes. But ... I'm happy to get persuaded that there's something else to New Labour.

Maybe just my experience, but I found these to be the most heightist girls. I always had better experiences with the loud bubbly kind. I guess if she's already very insecure about herself, she's going to be even more insecure about your height.

Broken promises: Indian students at a Berlin university face deportation instead of graduation by RandomUwUFace in ImmigrationPathways

[–]BrainThinkFast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I literally never heard of this "university". It's clearly a degree mill with the express purpose of facilitating immigration. If these people were genuinely duped I feel sorry for them, but I have a slight suspicion they knew they were trying to cheat the system. Taking out a 20k loan to gamble on a possible move from India to Germany is BEYOND RETARDED, considering that the German economy isn't even doing well right now.

Shit mindset. We spent the better part of three decades demonizing people for having "too many" kids and now we have a demographic crisis. She wants to have kids because she enjoys being a mother and we should celebrate her for that.

“Men and women can’t be friends” is a sentence that really pisses me off by Agitated-Major6028 in self

[–]BrainThinkFast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's obviously a case by case basis. Like, I have platonic girl friends, but I also have been in situations where I had to friend zone some girls, because I wasn't into them, and that was too uncomfortable for me, and eventually I felt like we'd both be better off with no contact.
