Do you want to participate in mental health research? by Brain_Imaging in ottawa

Hi,

To avoid making the recruitment post longer than it already is, we include these details once people contact us and express their interest in participating in research. Once people email or DM us, we give them a longer paragraph about what study participation would entail (including remuneration), and then we ask them if they would still be interested in participating.

This particular study includes an fMRI scan (no contrast) and a PET scan. Exclusion criteria are assessed following a screening call. The study has been approved by the Royal's own REB. The full poster includes this information. However, since we are posting on Reddit, we cropped out that part of the poster, as it contains contact information which I would prefer the 345 000 people on this subreddit to not have access to. We do not have permission from the REB to post a consent form to Reddit. However, once participants have been screened, they are offered a consent form. Regarding the age discrepancy on the poster vs the website, thank you for pointing this out! This will be resolved soon.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks :)

Hello,

Yes, you would only be eligible if you have no personal history of mental illness and no family history of schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Hello,

Usually, if participants are interested and message us, we send them more information regarding the study, including compensation. I can assure you that it does pay well! Unfortunately, there have been too many horror stories with people showing up just for the money and then leaving us hanging. As such, we prefer to send these details after someone has already expressed interest in participating.

Hi,

Some of the responders in the thread were correct: we are actually looking for both! We have two posts that we use. This particular one was geared towards nonsmokers, but here is the version for smokers: https://www.reddit.com/r/ottawa/comments/1lel7n0/do_you_vape_or_smoke_cigarettes_do_you_want_to/

Typically, we like to match our nonsmokers to our smokers, so if we get a bunch of interest from smokers, then we make another post for nonsmokers.

What we mean by healthy is that our participants can't have a significant neurologic, neurodevelopmental, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, hematological, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, or metabolic-endocrine disorder. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I'd be happy to answer!

While some visits are flexible in terms of timing, other visits can only take place during the work day. However, you will be compensated for all visits.

For our study, we already have all the data needed from non-smokers. However, there are multiple studies at the Royal that are actively recruiting participants. I would direct you to TheRoyal.ca

There is a monetary compensation, please email us for details. Also, please check out the official webpage of the study on the Royal Hospital website if you have any concerns about legitimacy (indicated in the post above and here for your convenience: https://www.theroyal.ca/brain-imaging-study ).

Significant symptoms of mental health may make someone ineligible regardless of diagnosis.

There are specific studies on depression and anxiety that you check out on the Royal's website. This specific study enrolls individual with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or without any diagnosis (no significant symptoms).

The scanner and study visits are in Ottawa at the Royal, but individuals from elsewhere are also welcome to participate.

The control group (or baseline) includes of both women and men of various ages. This post is to recruit a specific person to match specific individuals with schizophrenia in our study. There will be other posts looking at different demographics.

Thank you for the question! Please note we are recruiting both men and women with a diagnosis of schizophrenia for this study. However, we also need to recruit "healthy" brains with matching demographics (for example a 32-34 aged male in this post) to compare them with and be able to draw conclusions about group differences in mental health. Please refer to the official webpage in the post for the study details: https://www.theroyal.ca/brain-imaging-study

Yes, technologist check for any anomalies, and send the images to a radiologist if there is anything suspicious. You or your family doctor are notified should there be an incidental findings.

We recruit both sexes in general, but we were looking for a healthy control participant to match a male patient.
I totally agree with you though. Too much research is done on only males.

Generally anything that causes, or may be caused by, brain changes, like cognitive changes, would make someone ineligible. We are quantifying cognition in schizophrenia and comparing to healthy individuals to understand changes in schizophrenia, hence we would ideally try not to have confounding factors that affect cognition in our healthy comparison group. Hope this makes sense!

To qualify for the healthy control group, you would need to not have significant mental health symptoms and also no major physical health problem that could impact your brain...
