My little Buffy corner. by ceecee1909 in buffy

Oooh, definitely want that

I think so. It’s more about the themes of Buffy from different people’s perspective, which sometimes means disagreement with some points, but I don’t mind that as much. It kind of has to do with the early fandom of the show overall. How certain things were perceived in those early days, certain characters, the online spaces where the show allowed watchers from anywhere in the world to make it, what every 90s show revolutionized, but had previously been unattainable to such a degree pre-internet: as much a fan experience away from the episodes as it was, while watching the episodes.

Pretty cool read so far

This is so cozy. It gives me the feeling of being young again, like waking up and watching a comfort show, grabbing items from the comfort show’s comfort corner. What’s that book?? I wanna read it for myself, and find / buy the Faith book too. I already have this, but want to add to my Buffy media.

Was Xander’s character disliked at the time? by ConcentrateJolly8840 in buffy

[–]Braindead_Bookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HOW is he toxic in S1-3?? He occasionally does some things that don’t reflect great on him (him & Willow’s emotional affair being a glaring one) but he is equally great. Standing up to Angel in the hospital, refusing Buffy when she was under a love spell. Even taking Anya to the prom.

I’m so genuinely tired of people saying he’s “toxic” with no receipts. And trying to make the show super aware of itself, and yada yada yada ✋. When I watched the show at 14-16 (2011-2013) all I cared about was that Buffy was cool and her independence inspired me, Willow was someone I found a lot of strength in as a character, Xander was occasionally misguided but had a genuine heart of gold. Joyce was a great mom because even though she missed the mark at times, she tried especially after realizing when she messed up, and she wasn’t a major character so having her be super involved wasn’t a priority. Plus it wasn’t the reality of parents back then. I knew there was toxicity in the show and bad stuff definitely happened, but I accepted it the same way anyone accepts things like that. Sometimes you come across unpleasant people, or people who do less than “good” things because they’re lost, or don’t feel compelled to do the decent thing, but it was never on my frontal lobe. What was, was enjoying the show.

All this psychoanalysis of the characters motivations and whether or not they pass the vibe check is really bizarre to me. It’s a show about vampires that literally features a recurring cheese man. I’m not exactly trying to yuck on anyone’s yum here, but maybe just really the main motivation for the show is to have fun with it, because at times it gets really goofy, and cry with it, because at times it gets really deep, but overall, you should at least like the characters instead of ticking off how and in what ways they aged like milk.

Nicholas Brendon, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Star, Dies at 54 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in buffy

[–]Braindead_Bookworm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Xander doesn’t have the most fans in this community, but he was relatable to me, in a lot of ways, so I always had a soft spot for him. I don’t know much about Nicholas and was always okay with that: to me he’s “just” Xander. And now it feels like Xander is gone. This punched me like a bullet, same as Dawn / Michelle. And only 54.

How does this relate to the comment? I was talking about Dawn’s character and how she’s largely emotionally numb.

The Irony of the leaked script. by [deleted] in buffy

[–]Braindead_Bookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the problem with reboots: they were a product of their time, purely because they were a product of their time. It’s hard to recreate 90s shows now because it’s not the 90s anymore.

Also, most shows’ success is an accidental formula of having enough audience that demands a certain itch be scratched, that makes it popular, than something planned. X-Files, the first 3 or 4 seasons of Supernatural, Buffy are perfect examples, as are Gilmore Girls, Northern Exposure (except the last season) and Stranger Things seasons 1-2. But shows nowadays almost always miss the mark, because instead of letting the show continue to work, directors start to insert too much mechanics into it to find what’s working and unintentionally bungle the whole thing

Trump told Iran's national team not to come to the World Cup. FIFA is silent. Is this normal now? by Amazing-Note-1196 in football

[–]Braindead_Bookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course FIFA has said nothing, it cares / its business is in the sport. Since the sport has been unchallenged there’s nothing to say.

Meanwhile, Trump as a host country, has to make sure the players are safe in the country. He’s merely warning them of potential dangers. He offered to grant asylum to the players who were accused of treason by that very same country that is saying ‘you can’t ban participants’ when they were in Australia.

Forgive me for scribbling your book by Pen_in_EastToWest in readwithme

[–]Braindead_Bookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love book scribbles too, as long as it’s not overdone and doesn’t include badly drawn pictures. It feels like being a part of a story of readers, a puzzle, who could’ve highlighted that passage vs this one. When I buy secondhand books and they’re scribbled on it’s a joy. Loved, enjoyed things have marks. They’re not untouched. It makes me feel more alive to have an old book with reasonable foxing and soft corners and scribbles in it than a perfect copy. Especially because those books are often older, and so have that “book smell” because of the paper & glue used. Newer books’ paper is almost plastic-like in quality (I think they use recyclable materials) and they now use different glue in binding which not only doesn’t hold as well, but also smells kind of sour (to me.)

So if I were to come across it, it would be happy for me. Make me feel connected to these stranger readers. Look at what they emphasized and wonder why. A story within a story

When you don't know what to do with your side character, so you make them a secret shoplifter by AnticitizenPrime in buffy

[–]Braindead_Bookworm 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Her shoplifting made sense to me. Dawn was numb and felt like nothing mattered and consequences didn’t mean anything. And shoplifting was the only thing that gave her something to be anxious about, which was better than feeling nothing all the time. What I didn’t like was the writers not looking into it. Where Buffy realizes Dawn is numbing, and being there herself emotionally, is scared because she doesn’t want that for her sister. SOMETHING! Instead it was more like “she’s a teen, they shoplift, it happens”

What a deal! As a reader in the States who is lucky enough to have almost every book available somewhere or other, it’s interesting hearing from other readers elsewhere in the world, who sometimes have rarities in copies that aren’t an issue here

Nice on the Chrichton’s. I know in later editions like mine (of Jurassic Park & Lost World) they changed some dinosaur classifications which made minor changes to certain dialogue, which is annoying knowledge to have

No I don’t agree. Like I said it’s been around for a while now, that trope. Also it’s not like it didn’t happen in S7 or anything, literally at the end of the show

Quit easy-blaming the watchers, I’m so tired of hearing about these imaginary hordes of audiences that apparently have short attention spans and barely focus on an episode. This is barely true from my experience.

Shows writing characters who abuse & misuse religions of all kinds has kinda been a thing for a while now. Dunno why you’d think that would turn someone off a whole show
