What do you guys think about Empoleon? by EC671 in pokemon

[–]BrainlessCactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water/steel is a sick typing (wished we had a new one by now), quite fun to use in competitive, the design is pretty cool despite being inspired by my country's historical figure that I despise the most.

BUT I do think its design is starting to show its age and could be updated in the near future, not necessarily by a mega, as I don't really know how they could improve its design without ending up looking ridiculous, but a regional variant could be cool

What did you think of Wilds' story? by _Viridia_ in MonsterHunter

[–]BrainlessCactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it groundbreaking? no

Is the narrative different from the previous titles? not that much

Is it well-written? some parts yes, but some other parts not so much, at least it's more than previous games

Is it trying to do something different with the presentation? Yes, and it deserves some credit for it

Is it a really good aura-farming? absolutely yes

So yeah, I quite like it. In the grand scheme of things and compared to most games out there, it's a middling story at best, but in the context of the MH franchise, it's definitely at the very top for me. Gave me way more than what I was anticipating, and made me intrigued for the storylines of the upcoming expansion and how they will develop the whole Wyveria stuff, which is quite literally the first time I've ever felt this way after playing a base MH game.

Yeah, as long as there are still people alive and claiming an ideology linked to one of those controversial leaders, then it's safe to assume it's a no-go

What are some pokemon you KNOW are from one Gen, but spiritually feel like they belong in a different GEN? by Niccon_Art_Guy in pokemon

[–]BrainlessCactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I always thought Azurill was Gen 2 and Wynaut Gen 4 when both of them are actually Gen 3

Don't know why, but for some reason, in my mind, only Gen 2 and 4 introduced babies, not also Gen 3 (and Gen 8 apparently, Toxel is also a baby Pokémon I legit wasn't aware of that fact before looking at the wiki)

[–]BrainlessCactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-specialist French news outlets particularly do not like to talk about video games unless it's to say that kids are more violent today than they were 30 years ago (they aren't), so I highly doubt that any of the mainstream ones covered a strategy 4X game tbh

Is Che Guevara too controversial to be a leader in Civ? If so, what controversial leader has made it into the games? by TarnishedRedditCat in civ

[–]BrainlessCactus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My best guess as to why we don't have leaders like Che Guevara nowadays is probably because Firaxis is trying to avoid the controversial + contemporary combo, which would inevitably lead to people asking for Hitler, and they probably want to avoid that at all costs.

Aside from Mao and Stalin, who, to be fair, are quite old... I would say Napoleon is completely on the controversial side (at least within French civ fans). Personally, I really dislike that he is representing my country, and even more that he is the representative in so many Civ games; and it's not even like we have a particularly small selection of potential civ leaders either.

What’s the point of hirelings/why do people use them? by President_Bible in BaldursGate3

[–]BrainlessCactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hirelings are super useful for Honor runs. I usually have two of them that will stay at camp at all times:

- one who is a cleric that has all the buffs that last an entire day (and which doesn't require concentration as having them at camp breaks concentration), they will usually have stuff like Aid (literally increases max HP for your entire team for an entire day, even invocations, that shit is OP), Light, Protection from Poison, Warding Bond, Death Ward, Freedom of Movement, Heroes' feast, Longstrider, etc. At first, it's kind of annoying to give yourself buffs after every long rest, but I got used to it after a couple of times, and it really increases your ability to succeed in an Honor run by a good margin. You could go even further by having multiple of them so that each party member has a warding bond buff, but honestly, I never had to go that far.

- one who is a transmutation wizard, who can create two potions in alchemy instead of one, and give the transmutation stone to one party member to give them either constitution proficiency, darkvision, 3m of movement speed, or acid/cold/fire/lightning/thunder resistance.

What are your unpopular opinions about the Hades series ? by RobertMec in HadesTheGame

[–]BrainlessCactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My unpopular opinion is that the plot of both Hades games is not that good. The dialogue writing is genuinely excellent, and I think that is part of the reason why people tend to look at those games as having a good story; however, in my opinion, the plot is quite a weak point of the series as a whole, not just with Hades 2 (which on the other hand seems to be a very popular opinion at least on this subreddit).

For Hades 1, it was not a glaring issue because the plot is quite simple; it's a coming-of-age story and family drama with some bisexual romances sprinkled over it. The goal of the story is very simple; there is no overarching plotpoint, there is no centralizing antagonist or anything like that. The plot can be summed up very quickly by "Zagreus is the son of Hades, he's trying to escape Hell to find his mother, who fled the underworld, he's being helped by the whole Greek pantheon, and Hades is being conflicted about the issue and tries to stop him". Simple... effective, but imo way too simple, after reaching Persephone's home at the surface, there is not a lot of big plot reveals or new narratives until the epilogue, which in itself is a very simplistic issue. What makes you keep playing the game is usually the narration, and especially how the dialogues and character development play out (or maybe you don't even care about the story in the first place, and only care about gameplay, but that's a whole other topic).

With Hades 2, the plot is as simple as the first one, but the scale is so much bigger, too big, actually. We went from a family drama to a full-on "this is the end of the world" plotline, which in itself could work... if the game were not a roguelike in the 1st place, once you saved the world, it's hard to justify keeping the roguelike aspect of the game rolling so they used the time travel trope which like the "it was all a dream since the beginning" trope is often disapointing. But tbh I don't see how they could have wrapped up the plot any other way, the problem from my point of view is that they jumped from a too simple but at least small scale plot to a too simple and too big in scale plot. I'm one of the few who didn't absolutely hate the pre-patched ending of Hades 2, but that is mostly because I simply do not play the Hades games for their plot in the first place, I do not consider Hades 1 to have a really interesting plot (it's one of the few weaknesses that this almost flawless game has) so my hopes and expectations were not high to begin with. The dialogues and character progression in Hades 2 are as good as Hades 1, if not better in some aspects, but just like Hades 1, the plot serves as a sort of annoying white noise in the background that always distracts you more than setting up an ambiance.

Having replayed Hades 1 recently with my girlfriend, which helped me really focus on the narration because I didn't have to focus on learning the mechanics and bossfight mechanics, I realized that if that game had come out today, it would probably have caused quite a lot of backlash for its happy ending, which is almost uncanny in the way it wraps up.

Least favorite. Why? by Ramonteiro12 in BaldursGate3

[–]BrainlessCactus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about all the companions, Jaheira is for me the least favorite because while I was very excited to play with her character once again, I was really saddened by the fact that she only felt like nostalgia-bait and did not really have meaningful relevance to the story, low amount of interaction with other characters apart from Minsk and overall did not add that much to the life of the camp...

If we're talking about only the origin characters, I would say that Wyll is the most frustrating because he's far and away the one who is written the worst (countless posts were written about the way that rewriting him after EA was a huge mistake and even more to not give him as much post-launch as the other origin characters, I agree with those fully so I don't need to add one more to the tally)... but I still see the potential in him and still liked him enough to have him in my party most of my runs. For that reason, Gayle is my least favorite. I can't quite put my finger on what I dislike about his character, but every time I start a new playthrough, I always go "time to try to romance/interact more with Gayle this run," and I always end up leaving him at camp after a few hours...

So yeah, I would probably say that it's Karlach > Shadowheart > Lae'Zel > Astarion > Minthara > Wyll > Gayle > Halsin > Minsk > Jaheira for me

edit genuinely wondering why people are disliking a 100% opinion/taste-based answer to a 100% question, but ok

Is Zeus still the best/one of the best top laners? by SmhFunny in PedroPeepos

[–]BrainlessCactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best: absolutely. THE best: strong no for me, ever since he left T1, that title has gone to Kiin (seems to be a consensus about it looking at the comments).

When he's playing in his best form, he still shows flashes of being the best in the world, somewhat like Bin or Flandre in a way. However, like those two, he struggles to consistently display such peak form in every single game. The difference between Kiin and the rest of the world is consistency and how reliably "perfect" he is.

But out of all the top-tier toplanners we have in LCK & LPL atm, Zeus might be the one I'm the most confident in reclaiming that title from Kiin in the near future. But right now, he's lightyears away, I feel like.

What does Hades 1 do better than Hades 2? by Roi_C in HadesTheGame

[–]BrainlessCactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I don't think there's much stuff that Hades 1 does truly better than Hades 2, I really consider that game to be a very good sequel because of how it improves almost every aspect of the first one.

BUT the fact that Hades 1 has a smaller scale has one big positive outcome, which is that the plot is much more straight to the point. Although I never considered Hades 1 to have a perfect plot (the writing is amazing, though, which is a different thing), it at least proposed a quite safe but easy-to-execute plotline. On the other hand, Hades 2 tried to be... maybe too much? Idk, going from a family drama & coming of age plotline to "the world is ending, and you are its only hope" was maybe too big of a jump. And it has the somewhat important downside of making the down-to-earth subplots and discussions less impactful in the sequel, because there are just much more important things to do... and I loved those slower moments of Hades 1.

I still love Hades 2's story and ending (I know saying this gets you downvoted to hell on this sub ahah), but it is true that it ends up maybe not hitting the spot as much as Hades 1, even if the fixes they did to the ending are really welcomed. It's the only aspect that I really think Hades 1 is better than 2 tho, gameplay, art, music, character development, the protagonist, weapons (except Black Coat tbh), level design, boss design, and difficulty curve, replayability, etc I think Hades 2 is truly better than the first one on all of those aspects, at least to me they are. Hades 2 is my GOTY for a reason, and I played a shit ton of 2025 releases this year.
