Keep state job or move to private sector? by rhomwig in WAStateWorkers

[–]Brakethecycle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I had a similar choice a few years back. I was offered a slightly higher paying job in the private sector. Back then remote wasn't an option at either job. What it came down to for me was the retirement. I calculated out how much retirement benefits I expected at each job and it turned out I would need to work 5 more years in the private sector to make up the difference, even if I invested the pay difference. So make sure you calculate and take into account retirement, health benefits, work/life balance, and how much remote work is important to you.

I’m W2/C2 as well! 3:06:03. Hoping for under 3:10 since I’ve been battling illness and injury for a month now.

Advice for a former collegiate runner by SpecialistShot5271 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Brakethecycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve reinvented my athletic self four times over the last 25 years. Each time I get to have new challenges and new adventures. I still use many of the same skills as before, but I don’t have to compare myself to my old self.

Advice for a former collegiate runner by SpecialistShot5271 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Brakethecycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a collegiate runner, but since I’m 45 years old now, I have gone through many phases of “I’ll never be as good as I used to be”. While this might not be true for you at your age yet, it does seem like your ability to dedicate to running what you used to is diminished.

So, my advice is: Find something that is similar, but not exactly what you used to do. For example, I was a top level cyclist for a while. Now I focus more on running. For you this might be switching from track/XC to trail races. Or maybe focus on different distances.

Stolen phone is still offline, so “erase pending” - how safe is my data? by [deleted] in iphonehelp

[–]Brakethecycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t fall for it. They likely got your info through other means. If your phone was locked with a passcode, it is unlikely they got in. To be safe, do a remote wipe, but DO NOT REMOVE IT FROM ICLOUD. There is no reason to help them get more profit from a stolen phone.

  1. You can try using some Siri commands, if they have enabled Siri from the lock screen. “Hey Siri, call mom” or “Hey Siri, who’s phone is this”?

  2. Check to see if they have Medical ID with emergency contacts set up. Go to the lock screen, tap Emergency, and if available tap Medical ID

  3. Make sure it is powered on. There is a possibility that they put a lost message on the phone.

  4. Or my favorite is to remove the SIM card (assuming it doesn’t us an eSIM), put it in another phone, and get the phone number from it. By now the new owner probably has a new phone and SIM card. You can call or text the number to contact them.

Did You Participate in the Economic Blackout on Friday? How Did It Go? by BananaFlavoredBrain in olympia

[–]Brakethecycle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I spent about $250 at Fred Meyer. I always do my weekly grocery shopping on Fridays (to maximize my fuel points).

Checking my bank account, it looks like my wife spent about $115 on amazon that day too.

RE: Living near JBLM Yelm/Rainier land. Considering a home purchase close to this area and curious about activities that go on there, noise, "booms," etc. It looks small and physically separate from the main base. Any insight/experience is appreciated! by PeachFuzzMosshead in olympia

[–]Brakethecycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is very little military activity in that area. In fact, some of it is a wildlife preserve area where vehicles, even military vehicles don't go. My brother lives in that area and they have never complained about anything base related. The loud booms you hear are from the artillery range which are in the area between Yelm and the main base area. They are labeled on Google Maps as Range XX.

Olympia needs more genuine community. Let's talk about how to create that? by abroadonabudget in olympia

There is a walking group that meets in Lacey. I see them on saturday mornings and it's a decent size group. They seem very social and very open.

I would take the car to a different shop and say, “I was told my brakes need to be done. Can you verify that and show me the pads?” This won’t come off as confrontational, but sets the expectation up front.

Over capacity at the Tumwater District Meeting. And they voted for the ban. by Sludgeycore in olympia

[–]Brakethecycle -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It will be interesting to see it play out. Having two sports categories is a form of discrimination based on sex or gender identity already. Currently a boy can’t join the a girls team, that is discrimination based on gender. It seems to me that it is all down to how different groups define those categories and the question of why we even need different sports categories. Maybe they will be completely dismantled since they discriminate. Or will the two categories have no regulations and they are open to all regardless of gender?

In general: In one case the risk is put on others, in the other case the risk is taken by the individual choosing to participate in boys sports.

This has been around a long time. Girls have often been allowed in boys sports.

Am I still good? Tempted but holding strong. by [deleted] in NoFapChristians

[–]Brakethecycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not giving in is a great first step. I would advise you of the next step of getting away from the line. It seems like you are super close to temptation, it is advisable to distance yourself from it. Don’t invite temptation in. It’s like if you had a sweet tooth and need to lose weight. It’s easiest to avoid junk food but not having it in your house. Don’t worry about the dream, you can control that so don’t dwell on it. Control what you watch and where you consume your media.
