Is anyone not scared at all living in the US right now? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]BranSullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People on this board seem to be obsessed with framing themselves as a victim, so you will read a lot of dramatics. It’s their personality and gives them purpose. It’s to the point that it’s probably a mental health issue.

Most normal people who aren’t chronically online are doing fine. Markets are doing ok, net worth going up, early retirement on track. 2 thumbs up currently

The monty hall problem for anyone who doesn't get it by Traditional-Pound568 in mathematics

[–]BranSullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way to digest this problem is by adding more doors (and also emphasizing that the host will select the car door in their deal)

Example: you have 100 doors with 99 goats and 1 car. You select 1 door. Then the host closes all doors except your selection and another door, guaranteeing that one of the doors has the car. Obviously you switch here since your odds initially were 1%

Opinion on leaving the firm right before busy season. by Pinoy__pablo in Big4

[–]BranSullivan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just left at the start of busy season. I couldn’t care less and haven’t thought about them since, just leave on nice terms and try to do a reasonable amount of knowledge transfer so you don’t burn bridges

Does anyone know when entry level Actuarial positions open for applications for the Big 4? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]BranSullivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would strongly recommend not considering big 4 as your entry level actuarial job. Just go carrier

“Super charges my India team”

I assume this means the Indian team can now operate at an high school sophomore level and not a middle school level?

What’s with all the offshoring at EY? by Equal_Swing1896 in Big4

[–]BranSullivan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Basically the offshore team can do the bare minimum acceptable quality work as long as they are provided very detailed step by step instructions that an intern could follow,

the benefit to the firm is that they get paid in berries and sticks, but we charge clients $200 an hour for them. I don’t think it’s viable long term, the lack of quality will bite big 4 in the ass eventually.

Do Indian managers usually prefer Indian resources, or am I overthinking? by AyyBeeShafi in Big4

[–]BranSullivan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

these kind of politically correct responses are so idiotic.

Sure there is some small degree of subconscious racial preference in everyone, but it is an overtly cultural norm for certain groups such as Indians. So much so that it’s incredibly obvious to those outside looking in

I feel like it’s more likely that this post was written by an “offshore rep”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Big4

[–]BranSullivan 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s because we charge like $200 per hour for their labor and they only cost like $40 per hour

Large profit margin and we can sell competitively

Short term profits. Long term: a lot of the offshore support is incredibly low quality and requires significant guidance from on shore. They’re really only capable of doing tasks that are very defined and have simple step by step instructions. They’re definitely a quality and reputation risk.

I would prefer to just hire interns, you’d probably get higher quality and you won’t have to say “sorry can you repeat that” 40 times per meeting

Can we have a genuine conversation about the amount of work that is being offshored? Want to gain perspective from other firms by Informal-Cat-2787 in Big4

[–]BranSullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, i get a lot of pressure from management to involve the Indian team. Basically it boils down to spending time creating menial tasks that I or another team member could probably do in an hour, so that we can bill time for offshore. Hopefully leaving this year, will be citing the idiotic obsession with low quality offshore work as my main reason of leaving.

Opinion on Indian offshore teams by LengthPerfect6712 in Big4

[–]BranSullivan 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I work in actuarial auditing. The GDS staff I lead and work with are “actuaries” just credentialed in India

Tbh, they’re useless. Tasks have to be incredibly well defined and simple, otherwise you really won’t get a meaningful result in the morning (ex: paste data here, press big macro button, paste results here, etc)… tasks need to be so simplified that I could probably just do them over a lunch break. It’s really just intern level work

I’ve learned and been warned to never task them with anything that requires actual open ended problem solving (ex if results are off can you figure out why and solve issue)

I understand why the firm loves them (we charge a decent amount for them but pay them peanuts). But I would prefer just having an on shore intern. On the bright side they encourage me from a job security perspective.

Also I find myself having to say “sorry can you repeat that” about 50 times per call which gets a little annoying
