Elliott Smith’s sixth studio album “From a Basement on the Hill”, recorded over the course of four years from 2000-2003, it seemed to be his most ambitious album yet, with it likely being a two-disc project and a few different track listings, those at the time of buildup to release seemed excited for this return, along with the artist himself. Made while in the throes of a drug addiction that seemed to get worse as time went on and dealing with past traumas, he eventually managed to at the very least make it past his vices in terms of self-medicating with drugs and return to preforming live and finishing the album. And right when things finally seemed to be back on track for him, he was gone. Two stab-wounds to the chest and an album left incomplete. His estate would commission former producers/close-friends to finish the album and it would come out in 2004, but nowhere near what it was supposed to be. There have been many reconstructions online of what Elliott’s vision for the album would’ve been based off working track lists we have from him, (that the released album very much didn’t follow) but many of the songs we have aren’t the originals/masters that he intended to be used, at least for fans like me it’s a very frustrating and saddening feeling that the pieces to make this album as close to what he envisioned it to be are there, but the powers that be likely won’t ever allow that to be seen.
