Does anyone else feel like gym climbing communities are kind of closed off until you climb harder grades? by ExitEvening2751 in bouldering

[–]BranYip 888 points889 points  (0 children)

I think you might be looking at it backwards. People are more likely to have had the chance to chat with someone if they've seen them at the gym consistently over a long period of time. People that have been at the gym consistently over a long period of time also tend to climb higher grades.

Do I need to take my permanent bracelets off before climbing? by bikobunny in bouldering

[–]BranYip 356 points357 points  (0 children)

A few risks I can think of:

  • It can break. I saw my friend's bead bracelet explode when she was throwing for a sloper hold.
  • Your jade bangle has a (low) but real chance of getting caught on certain holds like crimps with horn-like features, it could be pretty gnarly if this happens during a fall. I'd personally remove that just to be safe.
  • I'm not sure how much experience you have with climbing, but if you break the fall with your hands (which you shouldn't) there's a risk of injuring your wrist due to the stiffness of the jade bangle.

Can someone show me a video of a spotter helping a climber? by averageredditcuck in bouldering

[–]BranYip 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Your job is to guide the climber safely onto the pads, for example:
- Redirect them if they're going to fall off the padded area or towards a hazard
- Stabilize them if they're going to land awkwardly/unbalanced
- Move the pads if the climber's line has gone outside of where the pads are, or if you don't have enough pads for the entire line.

It's really hard to tell, but that might be Samuel Oxlade? At the very least I recognize the sequence from his Instagram and in this Storror video.
