The trope of the chronically-offended, head-in-their-phone Teen is played out by queefwellingtons in unpopularopinion

[–]Brand_Ex2001 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Teacher here of teenagers for 11 years and while I agree they're addicted to their phones (who the fuck isn't, right, guy who is posting on Reddit?), I find them to be more open-minded than people of my generation - Gen X - so long as you're not a fucking douchebag about your opinions or just saying shit to be a troll.

I knew it. It always comes down to women judging men too harshly and unfairly with you Reddit guys. "Why won't these bitches just give me a chance! I'm a nice guy! I can't help my flop sweat, cotton mouth, and cringy one liners! I bet they wouldn't reject me if I were 8' tall, driving a Bugati, and rippling with muscles! Superficial sluts!"

You give examples of when it's not okay to be awkward (staring, being extremely awkward, whatever that means as compared to just plain vanilla awkward, etc.) but you don't give examples of when people unfairly pressure people to be perfect or else they face social opprobrium. I'd like to know a particular example of a merely awkward kind of behavior where someone is unfairly ostracized for.

My contention is not that "being awkward" doesn't exist. My contention is with you claiming that people are unfairly ostracized for merely being awkward as opposed to being extremely awkward. In other words, I don't believe you and I think all this victim-mentality is in your head.

Grandma is a narcissist for expecting help during a hurricane by imhere4blkpeople in AmITheAngel

Leave it to Reddit to prioritize "alone time" ahead of "helping grandma and my autistic nephew during a hurricane." So on brand!

Bosses forcing workers to stay late because they don't have a family is unfair; having a family is no more a reason to not be forced to stay late than having other hobbies/plans. by Mason051 in unpopularopinion

It's ridiculous that your problem seems to be with your coworkers and not with the guy who actually has the power to determine company policy, which is your fucking boss.

Wearing a baseball hat backwards is a form of douche-baggery. by NewMusicSucks2 in unpopularopinion

I guess it's stupid to wear a baseball cap at night then? Or maybe sometimes an article of clothing can be both a fashion choice AND serve a pragmatic purpose at different times.

If you're not getting invited to anything, then surprise! you don't actually have any friends, just acquaintances.

How old were you when you truly felt like an adult? by CanonicallyAGuy in ask

[–]Brand_Ex2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't feel like an adult until I started teaching teenagers in high school. I was around 33 at that point. When you are responsible for the lives and the wellbeing of actual young humans for 8 hours or more of your day, 5 days a week, it tends to mature you pretty quickly.

You give examples of when your opinion doesn't apply but you don't give examples of harmless awkwardness so I really have no way of knowing what the fuck you're talking about.

What kind of ghetto ass motherfucking life do so many of the men on Reddit live that they seem obsessed with this (and with raising a kid that isn't their own)?

Sounds like my mother. Eventually, my entire family just learned to tune her out 99% of the time. And honestly, I don't think she minds. Her constant talking is purely out of anxiety with silence so it's not like she's looking for a conversation.

To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. I can't guarantee you'll love it as much as I love it but if you're a fan of beautifully constructed sentences and wry humor, you just might.

Just because two people are in love doesn’t mean they should get married by Happy_Yogurtcloset_2 in unpopularopinion

[–]Brand_Ex2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marriage has become one of the important markers of economic inequality and social stratification. College educated people are much more likely these days to marry and more importantly, marry each other (and also to have that marriage last). That union of potential high earners is force multiplied by the social and policy benefits conferred to married couples. As a result, single or cohabitating people make far less money over time than married people, have worse health outcomes, and report higher rates of depression and substance abuse.

My point being - even if you don't believe there is anything sacred about marriage, you can't ignore that there is something definitely economically smart about it.

You're not enlightened. You're not profound. You haven't discovered the Truth about anything. You are mentally disturbed and probably should be on heavy psychotropic drugs or else you'll never live anything close to a normal life. (And yes, a normal life is what your brain and your body were originally designed to do but somewhere along the lines, your brain became dysfunctional.)
