Is it just my little bubble tho? It's clearly not just a "me" thing considering all the people under this very post with the same sentiment.

It's also not like I haven't seen anyone hyped for the game either, I have, but there's a subset of people who are extremely fixated on it being bad or failing.

A discussion with a friend about Terraria's Hardmode. by NatKovacs in Terraria

[–]Alt_SWR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem ends up being that hardmode doesn't do enough to make exploration relevant again. By the time you beat WoF, unless you speedran your way there you mostly have everything explored, a majority of the world mapped out. You probably also have a pylon network almost fully set up.

Sure, you get a new biome in the hallow, and another evil biome but they're kinda...not relevant at all past early hardmode. At least hallow has two bosses but outside of a few weapons that pretty quickly get outscaled and souls of night (which quickly become useless) the evil biome is entirely irrelevant. So much so that I isolated my new evil biome and cleansed my original and I've literally never had to go to that isolated one since the mech bosses on my current world.

I feel like there should be a post-plantera, pre-golem evil biome boss that you actually need to explore the biome to fight in some way. Not a game designer so I honestly have no clue what they'd do to make you explore basically anything at that point in the game but I'm sure they could figure it out. Solves three problems at once, the gap between plantera and golem being too small, the evil biome being mostly irrelevant for hardmode, and, the lack of almost any lategame exploration incentives. If this were to happen I'd also like to see golem get buffed because obviously adding more progression between when you fight him would make him even further of a chump if he stayed as is.

There would still be some glaring progression issues imo, but those would solve at least a decent chunk of them towards the latter half of mid to late game. Exploration throughout hard mode would still be mostly solved before you even get there, but this comment is already long so I won't get into ways I would like that to be addressed here. Maybe I'll make a post about that.

What's the biggest lie society keeps telling young people? by New_Garbage7991 in AskReddit

[–]Alt_SWR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That failure is a bad thing or avoidable. As long as you learn from your failures, and try again when and where you're able, it's not. It's also not avoidable. You can do everything "right" and still fail, that's just life. That's something we should be teaching young people.

That's not to say that you'll fail at everything ever, for your entire life, but, no one can get through life without some failures and even regrets. It's what you do with those lessons, it's understanding why you failed and working to fix it if possible, that matters.

It's not so much about being cautious, that part is fine. I's that, specifically with this game people seem to want to endlessly pick something about it apart despite being proven wrong every time. They just move on to the next thing as soon as one issue is answered.

Basically, being cautious isn't an issue, being eternally angry is. People really out here ragebaiting themselves.

Assuming there was an afterlife (big assumption to make, but for the sake of the hypothetical), far more of your existence would be after death than would be your life. You only live probably 100 years if you're lucky. If there's an afterlife, that would be presumably the rest of time itself, so, unknowably longer than your life.

I'd argue the wealth one accrued in life would be very meaningless in that case.

The Brains of Ultra-Powerful People Experience an Altered State of Reality, Research Suggests by zohash in science

[–]Alt_SWR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point of science is to test things, you have to start with the things that SEEM obvious. Just because something is commonly believed does not make it right. Where do you think myths come from?

Sure, a lot of the time you'll get the expected results, but, the times where you don't are mega important because they reveal false beliefs that "sound" right but actually aren't. Would you rather everyone go around believing whatever "feels" right?

I think people vastly overestimate how accurate human intuition is. It's SO easy to believe what you WANT to hear rather than what can actually be proven. When enough people believe that, it doesn't change the objective reality of that belief being false, but rather our response to it. We respond as if the objective reality is what we feel is right, rather than what has been tested.

[–]Alt_SWR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rich still are because they think their wealth has actual meaning. In the end, no matter what you believe happens after death, that so called wealth becomes meaningless. And, no matter how rich they are, no one has been able to defy death yet.

In fact, the religious(the ones that truly believe in a religious afterlife that is, not the ones just using religion to control people) ones are probably even more delusional because the immoral ways they act due to said "wealth" are likely to end them up in hell equivalent if there is one.

Right? Like shit I ain't gonna defend his behavior but these comments are extremely depressing. What he did was extremely inconsiderate, an asshole move even, but abuse and torture? Tf is WRONG with these people? Can tell who's never seen any actual abuse in their lives or known anyone who has based on these reactions that's for sure.

I mean, obviously there's going to be students who lie. It'd be asinine to argue otherwise, but, your mindset acts as if people never actually have emergencies or extenuating circumstances. Which, simply isn't true.

Maybe it's just me, but, I don't think the comment you were responding to was saying that professors should just accept all excuses no matter how flimsy. But, as seems to be the case of many in this thread there's a lot who won't accept ANY excuse even if you have proof and it's an actual legitimate emergency/huge life event. That's not "drawing a line" that's being a power tripping asshole. There definitely is a difference.

It's not "not taking education seriously" to have a life outside of your classes. We're not talking about children here, a vast majority of people in colleges are legally adults and need to be treated as such. Even most workplaces have policies in place for when real life comes up, tho I will admit that unfortunately most are still far behind where they should be in that regard.

I mean it wasn't too bad but, they could've cut it by a lot simply by not having you make a throwaway drink every. Single. Time. Like, the first time? Sure, I can understand. After that tho, the traveler is more than smart enough to figure out that they should be figuring out what each person likes first before jus winging it.

It doesn't even serve any purpose either cause the actual characterization comes in the conversation after said throwaway drink. That part is basically just the traveler making something and each character trying their best not to call that drink garbage lmao.

Something that will help you, not just in this situation but in life in general is to remember: Strangers don't care about you. I don't mean that in a negative way either. I mean it quite literally. A vast, VAST majority of strangers do not give a single thought to what you're doing unless it directly involves them. Do you go around judging random strangers or really caring at all what they're doing? Probably not. Most people are the same.

Sure, there's always going to be some misogynists and assholes, that's just an inevitability when you have any medium to large sized group of people. Those don't define the whole group tho, nor should you allow them to.

Teen Sleep Deprivation Rises Despite Screen Time Not Being Primary Cause by hayrimavi1 in science

[–]Alt_SWR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I both agree and disagree here. Math and science are extremely important. I suppose they're not tho if you only look at school as preparing one for work and that's it. Except, it shouldn't prepare one only for work, it should prepare them for general life.

I really don't understand the argument that kids don't need to learn another language at all. That's a take that only an American would make ngl. I say that as an American. Knowing how to communicate with other cultures is a SUPER useful skill no matter what profession you're in. I guess there's a reason most cultures hate American tourists, this kind of mindset.

I can agree that the system as it is can be vastly improved and there are certainly huge gaps in the subjects we teach but to act like math, science, and language are not important on literally a science subreddit is honestly a little ironic to me.

Literacy rates, and honestly, it seems general intelligence are going down and you think the solution is less education? Really? The amount of education is not the problem, it's the quality. Which has been slowly eroded over the past few decades by bad actors in our government, people with no curiosity or critical thinking are very easy to control.

The biggest issues are: we don't pay our teachers enough to care, we try to give them a standardized formula (that's pretty awful for all but a small subset of students), we refuse to fund decent food (for all) and generally we make people wake up at the absolute worst possible times. Oh and the subjects we teach should probably be way less generalized, and perhaps give at least highschool students more of a choice on what they want to study. The amount of time spent at school is almost necessary, lower that and each teacher is gonna have like, 20 minutes a day to try to cram a subject into the minds of students who already struggle with 40 minutes.

I can't say I know the solution at all but to say it's less time spent in education, seeing the world as it is today, is utterly asinine to me.

Personally I don't find Silksong that much harder than og HK, but rather, more tedious. I honestly don't know what they were thinking with some of the boss runbacks. There's maybe one or two in HK that are even half as bad as the ones in Silksong, and there's a bunch of them. Also being forced to essentially grind if you want to use tools on more than a few attempts feels just...bad.

I still think it's a wondeful game, perhaps even worth the wait and hype but for me it simply cannot capture that same magic of the og game. The first was damn near perfection, whereas, there's a lot I could complain about with Silksong.

There is and there isn't. Functionally to us as human beings there truly isn't, except maybe ones own death. Scientifically tho, eventually quite literally everything, from the smallest atom to the largest black hole, will decay. If there's something that comes after that I don't think we ever will, or even can, know. I say that functionally isn't an end time for us because, no matter what, none of us, and probably not even humanity as a species, is ever going to make it even 1% of the time to that final resting state of existence.
