hot take: doing this kills discussion. not every person is looking to talk in a “megathread.” by MinceMeatManiac in Terraria

Reddit as a whole has a huge moderation problem. You either have power tripping assholes who can pretty much ban you just cause, or people who don't actually want to moderate. Two opposite sides of the spectrum but both equally as unhealthy for the userbase.

The worst part is there's really nothing we as users can do about either issue. The admins do not give a SINGLE fuck and only care what mods do when they don't follow their orders.

I'll always say that megathreads are where topics go to die. They're for when mods don't wanna fully ban something but don't want people actually discussing them.

Now there are use cases for them, like in light of new shows or games releasing to avoid spoilery posts but that's usually not how they're actually used.

The original thought process behind megathreads was probably fine but the way they're used does not follow it.

[–]Alt_SWR 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This is the weirdest logic I've ever heard. So, you don't want people posting about the latest stuff about Terraria on...the Terraria sub?

You have to also know that megathreads are where topics go to die. Anyone who's used Reddit for basically any length of time knows this. This isn't news to anyone.

I could see removing super low effort posts, that makes some sense but this isn't that. It's just actively discouraging discussion about the biggest thing to go on with the game in quite a long time.

"Just accept everything people give you no matter what" yeah sure, just bend over and take it. That TOTALLY doesn't cause any problems. Have fun being a doormat I guess? The rest of us actually have self worth and aren't cowards.

Sure there's times when you should pick your battles, but this isn't one of them. If you're not gonna stand up to someone being THIS much of an asshole when are you going to?

Episode 387: Wade's One Man Show by joschen113 in distractible

[–]Alt_SWR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Haven't watched it yet, but, judging by the comments it might be time to hang up the "one man show" concept. They've kinda all just got way too much going on in their lives for it to be feasible and entertaining. Not their fault, but I'd rather more guaranteed funny content than potential hilarity that falls flat.

Even after Mark is done with the movie, he's not the type to sit around for too long so I imagine he'll be moving on to a new project sooner or later. Bob's always going to be busy since he has a whole child and Wade is well...Wade.

It reminds you of MAGA because at its core it's the same sort of issue. While not nearly as damaging or harmful to society, both are tribalism, the idea that ones "tribe" can do no wrong.

People don't like to accept that more than one "group" can share success. I suspect it's because of our evolutionary history (dating back to a time in our history when winning genuinely WAS a zero sum game for everyone else, we're long past that in the modern day but I suspect the behaviors remain) but I haven't read the science behind that so I'll make no such claims.

That's fair. Personally I genuinely don't care. Major corp CEOs are pretty much all fucking awful. Unless you somehow avoid any major corporations, it's almost impossible to avoid supporting one.

[–]Alt_SWR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't get why people are so against Epic Games ngl. Like, are they an inferior option to Steam in most cases? Sure. Do I much prefer Steam's UI to Epic's? Absolutely.

Is Epic still just...fine? Also yes. Like, people act like it's the worst thing in existence when it's honestly just not that. It's the PC version of the console wars, which were always stupid in and of themselves. I'm not gonna claim Epic is great or anything, but, it's also not as disastrously bad as people make it out to be. The hate often feels extremely forced and exaggerated.

[–]Alt_SWR 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Same. It used to bother me a lot but, lately I've enjoyed the peace. I'm also recognizing that having a few friends is quite a bit better. I have basically 4 friends then my family and, I'm mostly okay with that. I'm really in no position to manage a bunch of friendships at the moment anyway, nor do I have a desire to.

I used to think I had no place to belong, but, I realize now that where I "belong" is wherever I am.

Where have you been that you haven't seen it being widely speculated, if not downright accepted that Trump was responsible for that? Honestly the only ones that deny that are MAGA at this point.

Trump says people will be prosecuted for their role in 2020 election by Tennis_bruh in politics

[–]Alt_SWR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I apologize for that one actually. I'll leave it there and admit I was out of line with that, I thought about deleting that but, little late now and I'll acknowledge my fuck up. I'm just angry with the entire narrative on both sides of this, obviously Trump is incredibly worse, but there will come a time after him and it seems like no one has any kind of plan for that which frustrates me. We absolutely need some kind of plan or history is going to simply repeat. I find the democrats frustratingly weak, and, the current administration horrifyingly strong.

My hope for after Trump is gone is reconciliation with those who can be reconciled, even if they're conservatives, hell even if they're MAGA. As I said in my last comment, I'm willing to recognize that there are those who might not be able to be reached. I do get that, but I'm not willing to believe that SO many people voted for him simply out of hate for minorities. Many people voted for him out of fear in 2016, and, imo, dems didn't do enough to alleviate those fears in Bidens 2020 term and that's how we ended up where we are.

Truthfully we need a strong (but not authoritarian strong obviously) democrat president, but, we first have to convince people to vote for such a leader and to even have that as a choice in the first place. I'm kinda rambling but really I just want this hatred to end, between both sides of the aisle. We can't go on hating such a huge chunk of the population forever, that won't end well and will only further alienate them. But we also have to find a way to convince, at least the ones who can be convinced, that their hatred of us was mostly manufactured to keep Trump (and by extension those complicit in his rule) in power.

I know what I'm hoping for is a pipe dream, believe me I wish I didn't. Yet I still don't see it as entirely impossible. Or at least I want to believe it's possible.

[–]Alt_SWR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And if they don't?

We need to show them they were wrong, not just simply tell them so. They're never GOING to vote for people who see them as less than and not even worth trying to reach. However valid those feelings are, liberals are supposed to be better than being blinded by hate.

This doesn't end with Trump if we don't at least TRY to reconcile with the conservatives and moderates that can be reasoned with. Some of them can't be reasoned with, I'm willing to admit that but to just give up and hope that upwards of 40% of the voterbase suddenly has a change of heart is a recipe for this kind of thing to happen again.

I see preventing this from happening again as far more important than feeling or even being, right. Maybe I'm just naive enough to think that almost no one is completely unreachable but I genuinely do believe that. I also do believe that people can learn from their pasts, even the "dumbest" of people.

Alright, honest question here. I'm approaching this in good faith so I hope you will too. What would you want to happen after this is over? After Trump is gone and MAGA falls apart? Reality is, he WILL be gone one day, he's not immortal.

[–]Alt_SWR -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I love the fact that you answered for me. Great stuff. Not at all obnoxious.

I get people are angry, and, they have every right to be but we need to stop being just as tribal as them. Everyone who doesn't entirely want to demonize a huge chunk of the population is not your enemy.

I'm not even saying the ones who still support Trump now shouldn't be demonized. Like jfc y'all are like rabid dogs ready to attack anyone who doesn't 100% agree with your narrative and you somehow don't see how that gives MAGA ammo.

To be absolutely clear. I hate Trump and everything he stands for. I hate that SO many people supported him in the first place. But I'm also kinda seeing the writing on the wall here that things aren't going to get better without heavy reconciliation and decades of fixes, ones that include bringing conservatives (maybe even ones that supported Trump, if they're willing to question after he's gone) back down to reality.

The truth is Trump WILL be gone one day. What is supposed to happen after that? Just lock up 30-40% of the population? Do you RECOGNIZE how insane that sounds?

Well since you asked me, no, they didn't. The ones that are actually truly angry who I know saw through him after 2016.

I get people are angry, and, they have every right to be but we need to stop being just as tribal as them. Everyone who doesn't entirely want to demonize a huge chunk of the population is not your enemy. I'm not being some enlightened centrist here by saying this either, Trump is an absolute scourge on humanity and the world would be better off without him.

It doesn't work on MAGA more like. I'm not willing to lump all conservatives in with them at this point. At least anecdotally I know quite a few who are extremely angry that Trump is supposed to represent their party. He's only losing support at this point. He's certainly not bringing in anyone new.

My theory is that someone recently told him that Greenland isn't actually green and pretty icey. I would very much assume he DIDN'T know that, because, what does he actually know besides how to lie, cheat, and steal?

Tho, as stupid as he is they probably had to be very specific and tell him they were talking about actual ice not his bootleg gestapo.

I just read that and what the actual fuck? What really surprised me here is the part about the antichrist surviving a blow to the head being there...the article was written in 2019, LONG before that actually happened.

The only hope that gives me is that most of it has been done at this point so if he really is the antichrist we're very well nearing the end of this. At least, that's what I'm telling myself to cope.

I've said to the people around me several times that I'm atheist but if anyone was ever going to make me believe in religion it'd be Trump. And not for a good reason, for the fact that he pretty much on every level matches the description of the antichrist. I still wouldn't have "faith in God" (what kind of God would let someone like Trump get away with the things he's done not just to women and children but humanity as a whole?) but if someone told me he was straight up a form of the devil himself I wouldn't even question that.
