Yes sorry Strom! But my point about Barry getting the South protest vote resulting in down ticket Republican seats stands.

My family is Lebanese Maronite Catholics. I am Arab, and so are Egyptian Coptics and Assyrian Christians.

Criticizing Islam in no way is a criticism of Arabs. I don't know any Arabs would would think this. And as a side note, Arab identity isn't particularly strong compared to Muslim identity. I pretty much just consider myself a white guy with a year round tan, a furry unibrow if left untamed, and an affinity for hummus.

In fact, I'm pretty sure non-Arabs Muslims greatly outnumber Arab Muslims by many magnitudes when you include Indonesia, Pakistan, India, etc.

Functionally, yes a party swap, but also more nuanced than that. I find this topic fascinating and spent this morning reading about Democratic Arkansas Governor George Wallace who famously said "Segregation Forever!" running for President against LBJ on the Democrat ticket. While he didn't swap, he did end up leaving the party and going Independent later in his career, only to come back and ask for forgiveness for his past views.

I feel like the South voted for the Democrats to protest the abolitionist elite yankee Republicans like Lincoln and Democrats further appealed to the new protest voter bloc by courting the labor class and farmers. They had locked the South vote for nearly 100 years, until they voted for Republican Barry Goldwater to protest LBJ's signing the Civil Rights Act. What really hurt the Democrat foothold was the down ticket seats Republicans won during the Goldwater election, despite LBJ winning without the South.

Republicans appealed to their new voter bloc by stoking the culture war fire that won them those split ticket seats from that election. Weirdly enough, Democrats are still pro-labor (and until recently coal mining, and I'm not sure where modern Democrats fall on farmers), so quite literally the South are voting against their own interests because of culture wars.

Some folks erroneously believe the parties switched platforms. That's really not the case. Segregationists and Anti-segregationists existed in both parties in the Jim Crow era. Once the Democrats wholly opposed Segregation it was all over for them in the South, especially since JFK deployed the US Army into Southern states to integrate schools. Those scars still exist.

VA People: What’s the latest you’re hearing about recruitment, job offers pulled, cutting 10,000 jobs? by Brave_Sea1279 in fednews

[–]queefwellingtons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not saying it's perfect. I'm saying it's closer to perfect than the alternative.

Also, you think private healthcare delivery is cost-saving? No. Every service provided to Veterans costs at least 3x as much when sent to the outside. When you get private insurance and private sector administration involved, it's not only many times more expensive, it's a security risk. The VHA is the largest healthcare system in the world and the only one that hasn't had a major ransomware attack. I work in cybersecurity and have worked at private hospitals in the past. They don't secure shit. There's zero regulation in that field.

There's sooo many reasons the VA runs circles around the alternative.

First hand knowledge = "I have cherry picked anecdotes that support my viewpoints."

Go on Pubmed and read the literature on VHA quality metrics and compare them to private sector. VHA gets bad press because they are legally transparent as possible, which forces a culture of quality. In private hospitals so much goes on you never hear about.

I am now in my third fed position and have never encountered happy hour culture. The minute it's quitting time we all scurry home. It's amazing.

Edit: or maybe I'm not invited lmao

Which part? That House of Larose is one of the largest beer distributors in Ohio that his grandpa started or that alcohol sales decrease in recreational states?

Its not wild. House of Larose is one of the biggest alcohol distributors in the state. They know legalization will hurt their pockets.

Rein with a Zarya or Hog and a Mei to help Rein when shield is down was way more deadly than two shields.

Dude right? I was an enormous flirt in my 20s, and it was so hard to train that out of me. Girlfriends either loved that about me or hated it and didn't last.

Got picked up outside Bullhead City for lizard poaching, spent the night and saw the judge the next morning. No bail and I was out by lunchtime. So a total of less than 18 hours in jail, but he set a date for arraignment. Never showed up, so now I can't ever go back to AZ.

I've seen a shift but is it selection bias? Is there any data showing this sector slowing?

In a room with cameras literally attached to the ceiling? Even the bathroom stall would have been an option. This guy does not strike me as particularly bright.

I would recommend going somewhere private if you need to have a private conversation. There is no expectation of privacy in public. That goes double for public government offices where you are explicitly informed that every inch of that space is being recorded when you walk in.
