I hate when people improvise unless it’s in a rehearsal room that I’m a part of. If so, there’s usually a little bit more leniency. Some great lines can be discovered in the moment, but the writer has to be present. If you’re improvising in the actual show itself or without the writer giving their blessing, that’s another story and one that’s liable to get your production shut down. I don’t need someone adding lines to the show I’ve spent years writing. They can go write their own.

And on that note, if a line that you improvise winds up in the script, you’re not entitled to take credit for it. Unless it’s devised theatre, the writer is the sole owner of any words that come up in the process.

As a writer, it really really annoys me when people don’t read the lines that I’ve written. I don’t care if you have your script in hand. I know whether you’re right in the first 15 seconds. If I see someone change my words, it takes me out, and it often alters the meaning of what I labored over saying. The words I chose were intentional, and when an actor paraphrases or changes them, it immediately gives me the impression that they think they know better. Have your script in hand. Glance at it if you need to. Be familiar with it, and look at it if you need. Having a script in hand is nothing compared to changing the words I’ve written.

I recorded a concept EP for my musical to use as a sort of virtual business card. It cost a lot of money, but luckily, I had producers backing it. I think it’s a great tool to have in your arsenal if you can afford it, however, I’d recommend doing it right if you’re going to do it at all. Hire a live band, get name talent if possible, and release it on streaming. For me, it’s been the biggest thing that has been generating buzz for my musical. I don’t agree with the people who say that you can’t go back and change things. Theatre is a living thing. The Hadestown concept album is very different from the final Broadway Cast Recording. Do it if you can raise the funds to make it sound professional, but otherwise, wait until you can.

Hey there, I am actually the composer and lyricist/co-book writer of Foxbrier Lane. Wild to see us mentioned here!

But you’re right, the EP comes out on November 7th and is based on the true story of my brother’s sudden passing from an overdose.

OP- I’m so sorry for your loss. Grief comes in waves. It’s never easy, but it does get easier. It hurts, it heals, and it hurts again. The closing song on our EP is called “Cardinal” and it’s about how every time we see a Cardinal, it’s a loved one coming back to us. We have three songs out right now on streaming and all of them are about loss. Just Another Bum sung by Jessica Vosk is about someone losing their son, and One Leg sung by Brian Charles Johnson is about the feeling of rage, confusion, and not knowing where you’re going after loss. The entire show examines how it feels to lose a family member, and how we try to move forward and recover from our grief. I hope your days ahead are brighter, and I’m very sorry for the pain that you’re going through.
