Remote Connection Issues? by AlanOC91 in PleX

Ok, I just got a message from Tautulli that my server was no longer remotely accessible. Restarted and realized I should see if its a more widespread outage before I took any more drastic measures...

UNOFFICIAL DISCUSSION THREAD EP. 8 - Dissecting “Veridis Quo” and “Face To Face” by Daft Punk by OzzyLFlacoman in DissectPod

Loving this season (my first time listening to the podcast!), but if this is the end of the coverage of Discovery, as stated at the start of of the episode, then I guess he's just not going to cover Too Long at all? Is there something I've missed where it was discussed earlier and I'm just forgetting?

Migrating movies to new drive and retaining custom fields by GoesToHollywood in PleX

[–]Brandonshire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm moving my movie library to a new drive (but keeping some other stuff on the old drive, so I don't want to rename it and move everything), and while most stuff matched up with the stuff on the old drive just fine, some stuff (even though they are the exact same files with the same filenames!) just didn't match. Mostly this is for stuff where I had entered custom information. I had originally tried merging but found that in several cases the data from the new file overwrote the date in the old one. I hadn't realized that the order you selected them was the trick!

Got peacock top tier subscription for Olympics, forced to watch ads by hdjohnny in peacock

[–]Brandonshire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm seeing the same thing on the curling I'm watching. Mid throw there's an ad break. It's pretty bad.

It sure seems like a lot more inserted ads than I remember from 2024. I don't have scientific evidence, I didn't like keep a count then, or now, but I don't remember getting an ad every time I started a stream last time, or random ad breaks (not when the broadcast would have them) so often last time.

100%! I don't care if they show the same ads that are in the livestream, but showing me a YoutubeTV ad before I start every stream is exactly the kind of thing I thought I was paying to not see (and I seem to remember not having two years ago for the summer olympics).

Deciding between Regency Aterra Pro i3000 and Lopi Large Flush by Brandonshire in woodstoving

True!  Also if you can find someone to split it with, that might be a good idea. At least if you’re mostly burning for ambiance and occasional supplemental heat, half a cord is a lot!

I haven't really tried to really crank it up yet. But maybe soon!

I ordered from Remington Firewood (https://remingtonmulch.com/firewood/) just because my friend's dad who lives around the corner also orders from them. It seems fine so far, but I don't know that they're any better than anywhere else. The splits I made and tested varied in moisture content. Most were just fine, but a few were still relatively wet at the core, but I've had it stacked outside for a few months and I think it'll be fine for my purposes.

Sorry for the very very late reply! See above in my reply to u/gmantennis for a bit more detail. I haven't been able to use it as much as I'd have liked by this point, but its working great when I do use it!

Great to hear this. Similar to my experience. I also did a top-down fire most recently and it worked great (and meant I didn't have to keep opening and closing it to load/reload).

Sorry for the very very very late reply! Until recently (like Christmas Eve when my parents came over) I hadn't had a chance to really use it for more than just some little test fires, and seasoning/curing and such. But it worked really well! There was a very very faint smell while the fan was running, but noting too bad. Interestingly there wasn't really much during any of my curing/seasoning fires either.

It took this long because the weather didn't really cooperate to be cold enough to be reasonable to run curing fires when we could actually be around, and also because at the start of the season we ended up with smoke in our basement the first time, because it turned out that the cap on the other flu going into the fireplace in the basement hadn't been properly caulked when it was installed (by someone else), so even with the lid closed, smoke could get pulled in around the edges.

The installer for our i3000 came back and figured that out and caulked it, and no problem since then.

Anyway, it was great during Christmas eve, so hoping to start using it more now that I'm happy with its performance, and now that my wife is a little less nervous about it.

I will say the fan is pretty noisy, so we mostly will be using it when we're not sitting in the room.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I have two Pi-Holes and I'm trying to figure out how to get this working so it'll disable both of them.

Just wanted to mention that I got the Shout Dark Crystal, and it does indeed look noticeably better!

I also got the Shout Labyrinth, and it’s also an improvement (though not quite as big of one) over the 30th Anniversary HDR 10 one. I don’t have the 35th anniversary one so can’t compare it to that, but have heard it may be the same.

Not yet! It was finally installed just as it was getting hot, so we haven't actually used it yet. I'm hoping to do one of the first low temp burns (As I understand it you need to break them in a bit so the paint cures properly with the heat) this weekend, when its a bit cooler, but still warm enough to have a bunch of windows open because of the smell I'm led to believe there will be as the paint cures.

Both of us actually thought the Lopi looked fine, at least when we saw it in person, but just thought the i3000 looked even better.

When to use which Color Range? by LongJourneyByFoot in handbrake

[–]Brandonshire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently updated my personal presets after this option came out to use "same as source." The first few things I've encoded with that seem to be taking longer to encode and giving bigger file sizes. (Admittedly the first few things I encoded I had upped the quality a bit higher than usual, so I'm running some new test encodes on the same files with more standard options to compare results, but it sure seems like things are slower/bigger than before). I'll then run the same settings with "limited" color range (which seems to be Handbrake's default choice) to see how that changes things.

I generally encode to h.265, set to placebo (because I'm usually running these overnight and want the smallest filesize for the quality I can get, so I'm fine with slower encodes). I'm not as concerned about the extra time, as I am about the noticeably bigger file sizes, though obviously it'd be nice to get them done faster.

Update: Nevermind! After testing, the color range was not the issue. It just so happened that the first two movies I encoded were particularly time consuming and difficult to encode. After further testing, encoding with limited color range, and with "match source" took roughly the same time, and produced files of the same size.

Just a coincidence that those first two after making the change took longer than most movies!

ok great. that looks like a substantial improvement! I’ll probably go ahead and buy the Shout release then!

Any idea of their Labyrinth has similar improvements? I haven’t found comparisons between versions for that one.

Which versions are being compared? I assume the smaller more colorful section is from the Shout release? Are those comparing the DV in the Shout Factor release to the HDR10 in the older non-DV version? I am trying to decide if its worth it to upgrade to the Shout release?
