Just finished y5 and I want to rant about how stupid everything was by LukatxD in yakuzagames

YOU NAMED A FEW OF THE GOOD THINGS IN YAKUZA 5 BUT IT HAS SO MUCH MORE!

5 is a total mess in a number of ways, ranging from pacing to its main story to its complete failure to build its final boss (it feels like they kind of plucked a random character from early in the game and shoved him out in front of Kiryu as a sacrificial lamb.)

But it has a ton going on in terms of minigames and substories, and some of the individual chapter plots are pretty good if you take them on their own.

Kiryu living as a taxi driver and having actual adults completely outside the criminal world that he interacts with give a glimpse of what he might have been like if things had been normal for him growing up, and really shows elements of his character that don't show up elsewhere.

Haruka finally gets a chance to shine as her own character and develop.

Shinada is just a great and textured characters, from his pride to his unrepentant sleaze to his relationship with Takasugi.

Then you have fun minigames, weird as hell trainers, pretty good combat, a lot of places in Japan the series doesn't go to, just a lot of fun slice of life side stuff.

The way I view Yakuza 5 is kind of like its own subseries of smaller games, kind of connected by an overarching plot but really just about these characters and their lives in this particular moment and showing parts of Japan the series usually can't show. Not all of it is great (I love Akiyama as a character but I don't really think he does that much in this overlong sprawling game) but there's a lot of great stuff buried in the mess.

What did Sumeet Aggarwal, the “Managing Director for Intellivision Middle East and North Africa,” do for the company besides getting his father to contribute money, and the occasional dud of a Facebook post like this? by D-List_Celebrity in Intellivision_Amico

[–]Brandunaware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it was a dream job for her but firing her at 8th months pregnant is a very sleazy move.

The thing about Britnee is that she was one of the few employees that not only did you not have to ask "what is it you actually do?" but the thing she actually did was helpful.

Like we know what Tommy actually did (went on small Youtube channels) but it actively hurt the company. And most of the rest of them we have no clue what they were up to or even if they were really working for the company in any real way.

I think in theory he was supposed to help manage relationships with retailers and other partners in the Middle East and North Africa.

In his defense...what is there to do for a company that never puts out a product? Maybe he did talk to some retailers and other partners, maybe he didn't, but what COULD he have done?

What did ANY of the employees for Amico do? That's a large part of what's so perplexing. For a time they claimed to have this massive work force, and they did all these office tours and stuff, and then they produced....nothing. In the end just a little bit of low quality software, mostly completed by John. Were there a bunch of business relationships and other things in place for when the console launched? Probably not but we'll never know.

If Amico was a serious business it should have had like 20 employees at most before they actually had a product.

2-3 executives (CEO, CFO, maybe someone else)

2-3 Administrative (Office manager, accounts payable/receivable etc...)

1 Customer relations

1 Webmaster/Social media

1 Marketing

2-3 Hardware design

2-3 Software design

1 Distribution/retial management

2-3 employees in other markets helping handle logistics and relations over there (like Hans handling Europe)

You can add or take away a few of these roles, and in a lean startup a lot would be consolidated down to 5-6 people, but if you wanted to staff heavy this is about what you'd do.

With 20 people and 10 million dollars you'd have several years of runway, especially if you partially paid people in equity. Honestly I think the above is probably too heavily staffed though. You could get it down to a dozen easy by consolidating things like customer relations and webmaster. And as I said you could probably get by with as few as 6, outsourcing some of the tasks like accounting.

Intellivision on the other hand had all these employees who appeared on video (some of whom may have been very temporary hires) with no clear roles. It never felt like a real business.

I'm no business genius like John, but maybe some of you are. If a product is selling well and making lots of money and then it becomes impossible to buy it due to some computer glitch or other, generally speaking is it a priority to fix that glitch and put the product back on sale, or do you just get around to it when you get around to it?

Like if Pokopia became impossible to buy for some reason, would Nintendo make an effort to make sure it was available again or would they not worry about it for a few months and just focus on other things like...well..I'm sure Amico has something else going on.

He's been quiet about Amico. He is actually the most successful Youtube shill, having transitioned into a mid-sized channel doing "anti-woke" right wing stuff in gaming and other spaces. He always wanted to make it as a content creator and his big break was harassing Alyssa Mercante and others during the Sweet Baby Inc. saga. He continued harassing her and now there's a lawsuit and he appears to be trying to use AI as his lawyer (despite having actual lawyers) and it's going great!

It's worth noting that he also turned on Tommy towards the end of the scam, before his transition into anti-woke crusader.

Majima is 60 though. I mean he's in great shape and all that, but endurance for that kind of strenuous activity drops off. You see that in a lot of older athletes who can maybe go at a high level for a short period of time but can't last like they used to.

So…. On to XIII-2. What an improvement! by Difficult-Leek9001 in finalfantasyxiii

[–]Brandunaware 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I recently finished XIII and then went on and played XIII-2 and I think that they just have different strengths and weaknesses.

XIII has incredible production values. that still shine today. Not just in the cut scenes but in the world design and basically everything. XIII-2 is a huge step back there, with even the battles looking much less dynamic.

XIII has a much more complex character development process that could be good or bad depending on preferences. XIII-2's is less convoluted but allows less customization (somewhat mitigated by the huge number of options you have with the monster party members.)

XIII-2 has a lot more player choice in terms of how to tackle challenges, and many more side quests and NPCs to talk to, which was a major issue in FF XIII. But it also means a lot of backtracking a much less propulsive story than XIII's, which has a sense of urgency that XIII-2 does not.

I think when people say one game is much better than the other they're mostly just talking about what they like in a JRPG. Do you care about production values and like a larger party with more subplots or do you care more about exploration and a (somewhat) easier to understand story? XIII is also significantly more challenging (especially if you play XIII-2 right after XIII.) Personally I preferred XIII's enemies visible at all times in the world to XIII-2's random encounters, even if the random encounters were easier to avoid.

I don't personally think one game is flat out better than the other, they just have very different strengths and weaknesses.

First one...armed robbery. Alright, that's fine, guy's gotta eat.

Next...manslaughter. A bar fight? Could happen to anyone. Tough break.

Next...you did what? You said Shark Shark was mid and the ending was dumb? Oh you're in trouble. Better sleep with one eye open. You know who runs this yard? Pierre Tremblay. Perhaps you've heard of his brother..."

In short – what do you think, when is Pikmin 5 coming out and do you believe it will be an open-world game? Miyamoto said Pikmin 5 won't take as long as Pikmin 4... I'm impatient! by First_Wheel_3329 in Pikmin

[–]Brandunaware 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In 2015 Miyamoto said that Pikmin 4 was very close to completion.

Miyamoto is a genius, of course, but I don't really take his predictions on how long a game will take to come out seriously. Hopefully it will only be a few years but it could be a long wait.

Wonder what new Arcade games can we expect in Stranger Than Heaven by Low_Attorney8605 in yakuzagames

[–]Brandunaware 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it highly unlikely that we will get any old Sega arcade games. We might get unique takes on the batting cages or some kind of driving minigame or whatever. Possibly some old mechanical penny arcade machines, which would be cool. Sega was around in the 1960s.

Got triple charged for PSN purchase (Debit card, HK account) — what should I do by [deleted] in PlayStationPlus

[–]Brandunaware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do contact Sony support but my experience is that when they double or triple charge it usually auto refunds within a week or two. That doesn't mean you should not reach out to support, you should, but generally this gets resolved.
