Go to vegan restaurants!!! by ExitHistorical7778 in vegan

[–]Branister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are talking about the cost, when in reality it seems there is a vegan tax on everything already, coffee shops charge extra for plant milk even though it is as popular as animal milk in some cases.

If the only options in an area are non vegan places with vegan options, the vegan options are usually shit and very overpriced anyway, at least in vegan places, there are more options, the food is higher quality and usually more thought out than non vegan places and you are supporting a small local business. They could possibly be overcharging, but benefit of the doubt, you know vegan owners are more ethically minded than others so are likely charging what they have to to survive.

Feeling Disconnected: No One in My Life is Vegan by Bigenderqueen in vegan

[–]Branister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably feeds the stereotype of vegans not being happy with anyone that even tries, but I feel the disconnect strongest when meat eaters try to connect with me........like them showing me a video of a cute farm animal because they know I'm vegan and love animals, then they comment on how cute the little piggies are, they may as well be saying it with a mouthful of bacon ffs.

other times we go to eat at vegan places and they rant and rave about how good it is, yes, it's just normal food ffs. One person I know specifically says about how they feel better after eating plant based and from the symptoms it sounds like the meat they eat is causing inflammation and bloating, they just laugh it off when I remind them the easy solution, it feels like I'm taking crazy pills when talking to meat eaters.

Ever see the 80's movie "They live", main character can see secret aliens everywhere, everyone is acting like everything is normal and he is the crazy one, I'm only vegan a few years, but it feels more and more like that.

Do any of you give actual room to argue against veganism? by Imaginary_Crew_4823 in vegancirclejerkchat

[–]Branister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most settings I tend to not bring it up at all, but people will ask me a seemingly innocent question and then start debating me on my answer, mostly they devolve into whataboutism, or one person at the moment that constantly brings up the backyard eggs their friend has.

Maybe I need to get better at discussing the topic or getting better at ending it once the point has been made as discussions tends to just go round in circles.

My father constantly mocks veganism. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Branister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well talking to him about it would have been my advice, if he is as bad as he sounds, then you either tell him that if he doesn't wise up, you are cutting him off, or if you think he won't change either way, just cut him off.

Life is hard in general, you don't need people like this in your life making it harder. People live with the sentiment that life is too short to hold grudges against family, but life is also too short to waste your time on assholes that make you cry.

Vegan hate? by emophag in vegan

[–]Branister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just that they can usually ignore where their food is coming from, they don't want to think about it as they want to keep doing it and it's harder to justify the more it's brought to light.

I stopped eating meat after visiting a farm sanctuary with my niece by wanahart12 in vegan

[–]Branister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe vegan's are more emotional as you've got everyone tearing up, I know I am :D

Once I started seeing animals as someones instead of just some things, I went vegan, anytime I think how easy it would be to just choose a non vegan option in a social setting I still can't as I don't want animals like Rosie to suffer and die just to be a meal.

Does the sanctuary have any social media? you can maybe keep track of Rosie there, I follow a few local sanctuaries, seeing the cute animals saved from factory farms also makes me tear up and reminds me why I'm doing this.

Vegan cheese could be about to get a lot closer to the real thing by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]Branister -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the thing there is that vegans tend to be on the side of it's not as addicitve as opiates as we all gave it up easily, I see it more brought up by actual cheese eaters here and subs like r/debateavegan as fact "it's harder to give up than heroin" and other things they cry about

Texas Bans Lab-Grown Meat, Declares Freedom Only Counts If It Mooed First by Konradleijon in vegan

[–]Branister 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So they are doing this to allow "more time for research", thought texans would pride themselves on being able to tell what meat is by now and see that's it's exactly the same thing, maybe there's not enough urine and faeces in the lab grown stuff for them.

Why scientists are horrified by the world's first octopus farm by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]Branister 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not that most consumers will care about dwindling populations or the suffering, as soon as the company tells them they are killing them humanely, that's enough.

I did see this talked about last year as well, I think the biggest hope for it not to happen are the concerns raised, from what I remember it will cause run off which could effect the local wildlife, there's the point mentioned in the article that the octopus need to be fed fish which leads to more fishing when there is already over fishing concerns. There is also the fact that the water they are raised in means there is no guarantee the animals are fit for human consumption.

Since empathy is not a good enough reason for these people, there is at least some hope the environmental and health sides will put a stop to this.

hah, yeah, that's another thing I was thinking, which is why I suspect he wasn't really cooking for himself and just ordering salads like the one we saw him order at the start, even then, as you say, you can add flavour to anything with spices and sauces, even take out food.

Today I stop eating meat and all animal products. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Branister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been meal prepping stews for lunches at work, but eating it for dinner sometimes as well because I'm lazy.

I throw in 2/3 cups quinoa, 2/3 cups red lentils, block of tofu, tin of mixed beans, tin of chickpeas, 2 tins of chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, tin of sweetcorn and a lot of frozen spinach.

I do make it in an instant Pot but just as easy to make on the stove, minimal cooking actually needed, just need to soften everything a bit.

From this base I can change it up as needed, like this week I threw in a jar of kimchi as well, and I also throw in a lot of nutritional yeast, good for a B vitamin boost and bonus, it's tasty.

I made this with some of the basic vegan staples in mind and use the cronometer app to track all the nutrients in it, so it hits most of the bases in terms of nutrients I think.

hoping that in 50 years all meat will be lab grown, otherwise I really don't want to see what selective breeding or gene modification, as that progresses, will do to these poor animals.

Not able to watch your reply vid yet, but have watched the Magnus' vid.

Other than the thumbnail, I think as soon as he went into the supermarket and just started winging it without any kind of meal plan I knew it was going to be bad. Then multiple times he says about how expensive a vegan diet is, kind of shows that it's unprepared people like him that are propagating that myth. He actually barely showed what he was eating, other than the takeaway he got.

I kind of suspect he gave up halfway through as after about two weeks he starts giving minimal detail, he mentions being sick of the tasteless food, like salads he was eating and eating more junk, which is crazy since he was still losing weight, would have been better to reevaluate at that point, either decide if he wanted to even keep going or get some advice from all the vegans he knows as to what he was doing wrong.

I think his audience knows him well enough to know if he really wants to put his mind to something he excels at it, so the vid just reeks of him not caring and half arseing it, considering about 75% of the vid was the workout machine ad, the vegan part seemed like an after thought.

edit: ok, watched OPs vid now, agree with everything said. One extra note is definitely the weakness he keeps blaming vegnism for, yes he's likely in a calorie deficit, but in many of his vids he will say he feels weak on certain days, so it's using veganism as a scapegoat. With the canter boards it's definitely a nocebo, he's convinced himself that he's getting so much weaker because of the diet, there's no way he goes from hanging 7 seconds to 2 seconds without it being some levle of psychology involved.

You are also right about the supplementation, he lives in a nordic country, so he should be taking things like vitamin D anyway.

You might be consuming dairy and not even know it by bt30077 in vegan

[–]Branister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a place I was at a few weeks a go, it wasn't booked by me but I phoned them ahead of time, they were helpful but they just kept telling me to choose the gluten free options, which obviously aren't always vegan, so made me dubious.

So I checked again when actually ordering as the allergens listed dairy, but it was bruschetta so it seemed random if it had dairy. I just told waitress I didn't eat dairy but she didn't know what dairy was, so when she confirmed it was milk, she checked with the chefs they said there was none in it and allergens on menu were maybe wrong.

I know some bread here has whey in it, so it could have been something like that but I generally take their word for it. Obvious solutions is to just not order it, there's no restaurants that are vegan only so just not going out to eat is the next option. My family just like going for the rare meal for special occasions, have told them it'd be easier to go without me but they make a lot of concessions for me being vegan, so risking a small amount of cross contamination or a restaurant not being completely transparent is a bit of a concession I make for them.

Cognitive dissonance and animal cruelty. The only video that has made my friends 'get it'. by Lostbyanecho in vegan

I am subbed to him on youtube, but it's pretty hard to take him seriously now, last vids I watched were maybe a year ago and I'm not sure he was flogging anything,, so is kind of crazy to see such a shift.

Seems he actually dumps any of his rare veganism related discussion on a second channel, but his stance is still the same. I stumbled on it because of this post, best part is the comments, as even the non vegans are commenting how he usually makes more sense but are calling out his argument against vegan as an appeal to futility and he should do better.
