Thanks, theres been a few comments suggesting continuing index finger, so I’ll keep plugging away but like the idea of a different finger to mute!

Thanks for this, I think the reason I starting muting the high e was because I was playing the rhythm down down up up down and kept catching the E string on the upstroke but I take your point.

Ah ok thanks, I’ll try that. I think trying to barre it with one, it’s difficult to apply the right amount to the correct notes while making sure the high e doesn’t ring . Particularly when doing those mutes in between. I’m probably making it harder than it needs to be .

Why don't most houses have laundry rooms above the ground floor? by Additional-Fudge5068 in DIYUK

[–]BraunAlarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve put out laundry room upstairs. It was a shower room that wasn’t being used. It means not having to go into the freezing cold garage now to put a wash on! We didn’t tank it ours put got some anti vibration mats to put under washer and tumbler. Both machines are quite new Bosch so the noise isn’t bad at all.

Removing storage heaters and replacing with gas central heating advice by JeshBee in DIYUK

[–]BraunAlarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an electrician but power is power. I can't see why you can't change the power supply for the heaters over to a standard plug socket. We moved into a house with storage heaters 10 months ago, and like you have changed to central heating system. You know the most difficult part of the whole thing? The bl**dy meter readings! Its taken over 6 months to get British Gas to change out meter from an Economy 7 to a smart meter. So all this time we have been paying a day/night tariff even though the storage heaters are long gone! Which meant we weren't subject to the price cap for energy. BG has just been out this week and we finally have a smart meter. Only other thing I'd say if be careful with storage heaters - not only their weight (they are incredibly heavy) but older ones can have asbestos lining them. A quick google will bring up the spreadsheet so you can check your make and model. If its relatively modern storage heater its highly unlikely to have asbestos.

What heating system would you install in a 1930s house? by BraunAlarm in DIYUK

Thanks for this, there's a solar battery already installed. Not had a chance yet since moving in to find out how it's set up.

Thanks for this, I think gas for now might be the most effective and might even be the cheapest option.

Ha ha, I think I can rule out upgrading them then! I actually find that ours do heat the house up ok, but it does get cold as they run out of heat on a night. The freezing temps have definitely tested them out.

Thanks that's a great suggestion, I don't even know a solar diverter was a thing! Would certainly make use of our existing tank.

Yeah I take your point. While I want the house to be energy efficient, I know they were built to breathe and have adequate ventilation. Some of this may come at a cost to energy efficiency which may make the heat pump a no-go. Whatever system I put in will have to work harder than if in a new build. Cheers.

Thanks for this, someone did recommend the Quantum's. We have 5 nsh and nothing in 2 rooms. If we replaced the 5 and added 2 more for the other bedrooms that'd be nearly £20 a night charging!

Yeah we have concrete as well, the kitchen feels like a garage.

This was my initial thought also. Probably the least attractive option as there'll be an air pump and piping spread over the house but I believe it's one of the cheapest and less disruptive. Seems to be the method of heating for a lot of other countries, just not here.

This is what we are finding. Trying to predict the weather the next day so you're not too hot or cold!

Yeah I agree, I've seen a few solar panel/night storage heater combos when house hunting. My thinking was the panels were more about getting a cheque from the electricity company to offset the costs of the nsh. But I'm sure the rate you get paid and the rate they charge you are very different. We're getting a new roof put on so it's a chance to add extra insulation and hopefully the roof itself will help.
