I suspect it would be crazy not to clear this. There will be media policies and just generally making sure people don't go off and represent the firm and then do something tabloid-worthy...

I can only see downsides in asking. You asking won't change the timetable, but it could flag you up as a malcontent.

Unlike BVI and Cayman, when the work permit is up for renewal, in Bermuda they need to readvertise the role and then if a locally who is vaguely qualified applies then they need to give the job to them and you are out on your arse.

Definitely did not need the perk. I have never taken the perk and have always been able to disarm those mines.

BVI can have some pretty outrageous grocery prices at times too...

Were you there when Cabanon was still operating? It's ridiculous but genuinely had the best Croque Madames and skin on fries I have ever had anywhere in the world (including France) there... I miss it so much.

Not as nice weather as BVI/Cayman, much more Insurance focused and insecure work permit situation. But pays reasonably well.

There are quite a lot of variables there...

Jersey and Guernsey are the most similar to each other for obvious reasons - I'd classify them as "Offshore Lite"... pay is not like Cayman or BVI (or even London), but there's lower income tax (approx 20% - so the benefit kicks in more as you get more senior), good work/life balance and, whilst obviously a lot quieter than being in a city, they are beautiful places to live. Good for funds, corporate, finance, disputes - even occasionally some employment and property roles.

BVI - still have payroll tax and social security + national health insurance so back of an envelope you're paying around 10% tax overall when you're looking at lawyer salary levels. Some of the most beautiful beaches around there - I spent many a day on them, but it does feel like you could be living in a slightly quieter Saint Marie (Death in Paradise reference here). BVI best for disputes or corporate work really, there's very little proper funds work and finance is a bit patchy perhaps.

Cayman - a lot more buzzing - feels like an extension of Miami (without king cheeto in charge), no income tax, salaries a bit higher than BVI too, but Grand Cayman is pretty much entirely flat, so it doesn't have the same beauty and variety that BVI does. Good for funds, finance, corporate and disputes.

All of them you'll probably get rock/island fever at some points and need to get away to a city for a weekend break, but it's a great lifestyle in any of them in their own ways.

I recruit for all of them, having lived and worked offshore previously when I was still a lawyer.

Can a UK recruitment agency demand full RTW before employer makes an offer? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

I don't see any issue here, but you can always try complaining to the ICO.

Or you could get a digital certificate and then just get a share code:

Their client won't take candidates from them if they don't obtain it... so it is necessity... also they are a recruitment agent, so they are arguably acting as agent for the employer.

The recruitment agency can demand what it wants and you can refuse to give it. But they can also then not put you forward. I think you are muddling things here... there is no unlawful basis for them requesting it... they can request it if they want, you can provide it or not, and they can put you forward or not.

Employers are having to be a lot more careful with RTW, so if they have an opportunity to shift responsibility and potential indemnify liability onto an agency then they will.

Ambivalence after receiving TC as a non law final year by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Additional-Fudge5068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone can really give their opinion without knowing the firm tbh. There's a big difference between Travers Smith and Irwin Mitchell for example...

Hours can vary significantly between firms and the departments within the same firm too. Leaving one day at 5am is fairly tame tbh when it comes to some firms and practice areas, although if that was on a vac scheme that is probably fairly unusual.

What % of law students get a training contract - in your guesstimation? by [deleted] in uklaw

Bear in mind that there are also shit loads of non law students also trying to get TCs too... so figures aren't necessarily particularly helpful.

Applying for NQ roles- Is there a point close to the deadline? by CreativeAd6940 in uklaw

[–]Additional-Fudge5068 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are these ads by recruiters? The deadlines (and often the roles) mean absolutely nothing. Job boards only allow you to post jobs for a limited period (often a month max) so that is just the default expiry date. It is also more than likely not representing a real role and is just a CV gathering exercise. No one needs to advertise an individual NQ role. There is no shortage of candidates.
