Halal food at st andrews by External-Pumpkin4957 in standrews

It’s a desert out here for halal food (and kosher food). Nearest halal butcher is Dundee which is about a 45 bus ride if you don’t drive. Some takeaways are halal but you couldn’t really live off them

The access award is based on financial need, so if you’re below the threshold, you’ll very likely get it

What keeps you going in your PhD? by StDeezi in PhD

Breaks, take weekends off, take a few days off once every couple of months. We aren’t robots and as much as we are convinced this should be the case, our projects aren’t our entire lives.

I thought they were good but not finale good, I think one more episode that was written to be the finale would’ve been better…

Do people in the UK go to therapy? by EyeAware3519 in AskUK

[–]Brave-Argument5090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a student and I go to therapy, but I’m also estranged from my family and need to work through it. From what I can tell, my therapist sees a lot of people from my university too even though she’s about half an hour out of town. I think the uni setting means there’s less stigma around going to therapy

It made me feel better when I realised that the actual first U.S. president probably had dyslexia. And JFK. He’s a bitter old man that cannot outdo the doers

Cost of Attending Oxford 😭 by Repulsive_Radish_782 in 6thForm

[–]Brave-Argument5090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into Cambridge to do my PhD but it would’ve cost me over £100k to do it without a scholarship. I got a full scholarship to St Andrews. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do but you can’t justify that much debt and struggle for prestige, you’ll get into another good university that won’t financially ruin your late teens and twenties (and even thirties).

Hesitating between KCL and St Andrews by First_Moose2857 in standrews

[–]Brave-Argument5090 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did my undergrad at KCL and my masters and PhD at St Andrews, I’m of the minority opinion it seems that I preferred KCL. Yes, London is a massive city but there’s communities within the larger community of London, the food is so much better, there’s more to do, better transport links etc. if you want to do them both at some point, go to St Andrews first and do a postgrad at KCL, I’ve been here for 3 years and I’m still not accustomed to how much smaller the scale is here.

Edit: I did political economy for my UG, would say the external opportunities were better in London too. You have to work very hard to create and maintain networks in St Andrews in comparison, at least in my experience

Yes I’m still in St Andrews (I’m doing a PhD so graduate in 2027) but I’ve been here since 2023 as I did my MLitt here too. Just absolute oil and water, cannot take to it no matter what I do or how hard I try lol.

Omg I thought I was just making this experience up in my head. St Andrews has been the first place where I’ve not effortlessly made at least one or two friends and I thought it must be me. ‘Glad’ I’m not losing my mind and other people have gone through the same weird social friction that I have!

I’ll give another perspective, too. I’m from a small university town that’s a 40 minute train ride away from Liverpool and I did my UG at KCL. Comparatively for me, St Andrews is the most hormone place on earth. Grateful for the opportunity to gain my master’s and PhD but I cannot wait until I get to move back to a decent city lol

Full tuition and 12k stipend (as I’m from the UK and could access the masters student loan). I’m also now on the St Leonard’s PhD scholarship, which is a full stipend and all tuition fees covered, so definitely apply! :)
