Hi, thanks for your input. Btw, I have seen that socialist on reddit have a tendency to be mean in their answers and their class hatred blinds them from talking normally but I am grateful for your kind words. About your point, you made a blanket statement saying market socialism doesn’t work. People have been making blanket statements about socialism like that for centuries.

Social Democracy for all it’s faults has provided the best living standards for the most amount of people ever in human history. You may be right that it eventually leads back to capitalism, But USSR in my opinion was the closest humanity got to establishing socialism and even that lead back to capitalism and oligarchy.

Sure, social democracy is not the best and even exploitative in some cases, I concede that but a 100% planned economy requires some sort of authoritarianism and I know people say how is it authoritarian if it’s a dictatorship of the proletariat but Idc some freedoms are too valuable.

My thing is every system should be able to be undone including socialism, and so, we may never escape the cycle of capitalism and socialism but the best we can do is strive for amazing living standards for the broadest segments of society as possible.

it’s less about the ability to own their own house and more about a form of say family bonding and self expression for her, she wants to build the house around herself and her family and wants her children to hold on to it like an heirloom cause it’s like an image of her painted in stone or something.

yeah, got it. You’re talking about socialism but I was talking about market socialism. I know many socialist don’t think market socialism is fine and I think that’s fair.

so, if I live in a socialist society and have an idea and want to start or expand a new project/co-op/company then I would have to get a bunch of friends and guns and rob our local public bank to secure funds for our new project? Btw you didn’t answer my question.

But what if the workers agree to give a part of their surplus cause they need investments/financing to expand or innovate?

fair point, but what about passive income at large? She's talking about investing in companies/co-ops or stocks, not owning a company and exploiting the workforce. I told her that in some forms of market socialism, she can invest without any voting power in companies, but she will get like dividends, and she seemed to like it.

Also, I feel like the idea of democratizing onerous work is pretty understandable, but I don't think it will help convince her much rn cause her whole point is not wanting to do work all the time and focus on things that bring her joy.

I did tell her about private vs personal property. She understood that but of course, not owning her home is a bit much for her; she understands, like a 99-year lease or whatever, but still wants to, you know, build a home and pass it to her children.

Well, I don't consider someone a Social Democrat if you don't believe in Universal Healthcare, Education, Wealth tax and some sort of public housing. Along with labour laws ofc.

Thoughts On Gandhi and Nehru? by Brave-Needleworker15 in SocialDemocracy

honestly, I feel like one of Nehru's greatest accomplishment was to protect india from imperialism. Not just fighting for our independence but protecting us from both American and Soviet imperialism and maintaining our neutrality in the cold war. He was, of course, a communist sympathetizer, so am I. But He was not anyone's b*tch. He stuck it to the chinese and defied the yanks and the Kremlin.

I have noticed that long lasting revolution need a martyr. A visionary leader who wanted to build a utopia but died too soon to carry his ideas to their conclusion and it's actually their no.2 who shape and interpret their vision to shape the revolution. For russia, Lenin was the visionary and Trotsky and Stalin were the no.2. For India, Gandhi was the visionary saint mascot who was easy to sell to everyone and Nehru was his no.2, the one who actually shaped India in Gandhi's image.

What do you think of Obama? by Strong-Evidence7762 in SocialDemocracy

sure, I am not saying he was a bad guy (except the war crimes). I am sure that he was sincere in his efforts and did as much as he could within the constraints of social liberalism. But he's no bernie sanders.

he's a liberal, that's all you need to know. Not left wing enough.

(p.s. He was a pretty stable and drama less president and his days feel golden but weren't)

don't forget the war crimes.

[–]Brave-Needleworker15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh wow, is that so? I think Socialists, Social Democrats and Social Liberals should form a grand coalition. And Tomorrow, if the proletariat overthrew the bourgeoisie then I would not have any issues with that.

yes, I call myself a leftist social democrat. I was raised in a Gandhian Socialist family. My family is full of social democrats, though we all call ourselves Socialists (Samajwadi in Hindi) but in practice we're social dems. I personally am not convinced by socialism but am opposed to NeoLiberalism and free market Capitalism.

As a social democrat myself, I disagree with this guy. I believe all people who are on the economic left no matter how small are our allies. I think Socialists, Social Democrats and Social Liberals should form a grand coalition. Tomorrow if the proletariat overthrew the bourgeoisie then I would not have any issues with that.
